Morning Quack Fix: 2.16.09
It's your morning Quack - President's Day edition.
- The Blount rumors can now be put to rest - LeGarrette told Rob Moseley that his suspension was due to missing team strength and conditioning sessions. See the full story. Our MarineCorpsDuck kindly started a thread on the topic when the news broke yesterday...jump in and give us your quacks on the topic.
- Bob Clark of the R-G reports that the Ducks men's basketball team is likely to get an extra day off this week. Guys have been sick, others banged up, not to mention mentally drained following two more blowout losses.
- Stewart Mandel of Sport Illustrated recently posted 10 story lines for the college football off-season. Included are notes on Chip Kelly/Mike Bellotti and Bryce Brown.
- In other weekend news: The Ducks softball team evened its record at 5-5 with a big win over Southern Mississippi in Las Vegas yesterday. Oregon's men's tennis team ended a short losing streak with a victory over Wichita State. Pavlina Smatova - a sophomore on the women's tennis team - was named the GoDucks.com Student-Athlete of the Week.

I'm wondering about Sirmon for DC-in-waiting...

I heard we just named Clemens QB coach in waiting and once there he is OC in waiting! big time. Can’t we just hire him as backer coach and see what happens?

...okay
I was just saying, I was fantasizing about having a better DC, and somebody like Peter Sirmon or Wilcox would be awesome, that’s all.

I kid, I kid
I would love, love, love a new D coordinator in the next few years.

I was just thinking about who else there is...
We have our eyes on Wilcox, but what else is out there, realistically? Can you think of any names you’d be elated to have here, who could also be theoretically baited here?
Also, sorry, I reread my post and I didn’t realize how I was getting ahead of myself. Just an impulsive reaction to bringing back an old, competent friend.

John Gruden!!!!!!!!!!
I would love him as a D-Coordinator!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can’t stop using exclamation points I like it so much!!!!!!!!!!!
May we hand you your taints on a silver platter...
I thought Chuckie Gruden was more of an offense guy.

Most likely, but
He always had decent defenses on his teams and I am pretty sure anyone who could fog up a mirror with his nose could do better than Aliotti. He could come in, learn the offense and run the defense at the same time.
Just really wishful, cold medicine-induced, thinking…

My short list
Without benefit of further research, I’m looking for D coordinators having success at non-BCS schools or BCS schools who aren’t often in conference championship contention = consistently getting it done with something less than USC’s, Florida’s or Ohio State’s talent.
Dick Bumpas – Texas Christian: TCU’s D-1 ranking for total defense 2005-08 – 25th, 2nd, 15th, 1st. Lots of bowl wins, lots of award-winning players and big school/big conference experience at Tennessee. See his profile.
Justin Wilcox – Boise State: BSU had top-25 defenses in both 2007 and 2008 seasons. He’s a Duck. He’s a local guy. If Oregon comes calling, you have to figure they’d probably get their man. See his profile.
Todd Orlando – Connecticut: He’s been the d-coordinator since 2005 and the Huskies have been a top-6 defensive twice since. Having coached in the same part of the country for several years, there’s a chance Chip Kelly knows who this guy is. See his profile.
Troy Douglas – South Florida: Stop laughing…it was just one game. South Florida’s defense has been top 30 or better the past four seasons. Douglas’ role had been safeties, then expanded to the entire defensive backs this past season. With 20 years of coaching behind him (including Michigan State, SMU and UTEP), Douglas may be ready for the next level. See his profile.

Thank you!
I like these suggestions. I’d love to have Wilcox, but Orlando or Douglas sound good as well.

Excellent.
Most of my harping on Aliotti over the years has been about the play of our linebackers, not so much the DBs. So I am pretty stoked about Oregon bringing in a guy with Pac-10 and NFL experience, even as a GA. He commands instant respect and brings credibility no matter what his role. The fact that he’s a Duck who we all know and love, even better.
I sense a deep commitment to improving at linebacker. They’ve got some serious talent there now. It’s time they did something special with it.

Though, if there's one thing about Alliotti that we hate...
… it’s that he doesn’t play to strength.
