More Chris Harper news
It sucks we, as Duck fans, have to muddle through this Chris Harper saga every few months.
But, here is another story out of Kansas and the Witchita Eagle. Harper's brother is still giving the impression that Chris is not fully committed to staying at Oregon.
If you recall, it was Harper himself you eluded to the idea of exploring options. It also sounds as though he really wants to play QB.
Really hope this kid sticks it out.

Retread...
The headline might as well say, “Life continues as normal.” While they have a quote from Harper’s brother, the quotes from Chris are from over two months ago, and the rest is speculation.
I’ll be honest though, if I were him, I would greatly consider leaving. In my opinion, he won’t be playing QB at Oregon. He got his chance, and it didn’t work out. We have ample QBs for the next 2 years (Masoli, Roper, Costa), and then have Thomas. We will most likely be bringing in more QBs next recruiting class. QB is stacked, and Harper’s throwing is just not up to par. While he’ll be a great athlete, and could be one of our best, due to our athletic talent, he’s far from irreplaceable. I wish Chris the best, but losing him wouldn’t be that bad for the program. So if he wants to go, he should do it now, rather than later.

Would love to see him get off the QB thing and just be a stud athlete for Oregon.
I gotta agree, if he does end up wanting to go (and he’s obviously mulling it over with his family) and his heart is at the QB position then it won’t hurt the Ducks too bad.

Right. I’d really like to see him stay at Oregon, because that would indicate to me he realizes that he may not have what it takes to be a successful D-1 QB. Yeah, yeah, bad shoulder…whatever. He just didn’t look like he had “it” to me.
He did look like he could be a fantastic receiver.
You cannot hide from our weapons of Masoli destruction.
Ugh.
Mountain <=== Molehill.

What I find interesting about all of these “reports” is that they are all out of the state of Kansas. Anyone associated with the Oregon program (and even the reporters following said program) aren’t saying anything about it. It honestly makes me wonder if Chris left the door open in the winter saying he was homesick and now the folks in the midwest are attempting to sway opinion of it by bringing it up all the time.
In times like these, I really feel for Rob Moseley. You know he gets asked all the time and has to be pulling his hair out in frustration about having to answer (or not answer) the question.

Autzen Stadium is where great teams go to die." - J. Brady McCullough, The Michigan Daily.
From what I gathered from him...
He really, really hates those off-topic posts about Chris Harper. I would hate them too if I were him.

Keep in mind, dvieira, that Harper is from Kansas (I know you know that) and it’s the local beat writers job to continually poke and prod for info. and build relationships.
It seems to be that Jeff Martin has built that relationship with the Harper family – probably going all the way back to when Chris was in H.S. It was also Martin who was in Eugene with Harper back in December and did that story of him then.
I could understand local Kansas folks wanting to sway opinion, but when it’s the guys own brother who says they’re going to discuss what happens next… you gotta wonder.

It's also the one of the most boring time of the college spots calender...
Most of the article was simply retread. Any sane person will look at what they’re doing every few months. The words could be spun any way the writer wanted. It seems like someone filling space at this point in time. It’s all moot until after spring practice anyway.

if we were any good at basketball..
one could argue it is an exciting time, but unfortunately we suck and all we have to look forward to is an exciting but most likely mediocre baseball season. anywhoo, i’ll still be out there friday afternoon. art history be damned.
"I think people in this state like BOTH teams," proclaims Nick Aliotti, the Ducks' defensive coordinator. "Except for our hard-core fans, I don't think most Duck fans would have been terribly upset to see Oregon State going to the Rose Bowl."
Another reason he needs to go.

Ahhh, yes
But Martin covers Kansas… and they are very good at basketball, so it’s not too boring for them right now.
I thought it might be a bit of a down time for Martin as well, but after reading some info on him it seems he covers both KU and KSU and covers a range of sports.
In any case, it is what it is.
Good for you for damning art history on a day like Feb. 27th!!

Looks like his main focus is football
but after reading some info on him it seems he covers both KU and KSU and covers a range of sports.
But, from what I’ve gathered on him it seems he, like many small town beat writers, ventures into other sports in the off-season. Like Moseley seems to cover women’s basketball and a little on the baseball side of things, etc. when football is not in full effect.
You know Martin is searching for stories as spring ball is just around the corner. The main point is that it’s awfully odd that the kid’s own brother is simply saying they’ll evaluate Chris’ future as soon as this semester is over.
Here’s my take – Yes, it may be a bit of a retread, but it’s updated retread and in the last few days (via Chris’ family) it seems that Chris still, over the past few months, isn’t 100% sure about playing ball at Oregon. That’s not saying he is, in fact, going to bolt. But, yes, he is leaving the door open to do so. That’s not commitment in my opinion.
I’m more concerned with what happens if he does leave. Is it then a wasted scholarship (say he leaves after this semester).
It's a total retread. Here's the fresh content...
“We’re going to evaluate things,” Ladale Harper said.
Give me a break. This can mean anything you want it to. Who doesn’t evaluate things after your first year of school (so he’ll be at Oregon until June at least)? The rest of the article is requotes, that are used in a way to make people things he’s seriously considering leaving, or pure speculation. IMO, it’s below average journalism. It was fairly obviously written by someone who doesn’t have much to write about, or someone that wants to stir things up.
As far as Harper’s commitment, I want him to be happy. At this point, he’s working hard and doing well, and he himself isn’t being a distraction. That’s all the commitment I need.
Also, if he leaves, it won’t be a wasted scholarship, as we’ll still be able to have 85 players on scholarship.
