Daily Quack Fix: 2.3.09
Well, here we are. One day away from signing day. As such, most of the news out there is recruiting-related. Enjoy.
- Following up on Jared's comment in yesterday's fix thread, John Hunt reports that prep DT Justin Brown has committed to Oregon. Hunt also makes the same joke as Jared.
- Rob Moseley writes about the three newest football commits in today's Register-Guard. In addition to Justin Brown and Braxton Lane, Moseley reports that the Ducks got a commitment from prep QB Daryle Hawkins from Nebraska. Apparently, Hawkins had been set to sign with Northern Iowa, which is where Oregon picked up its new receivers coach.
- Scout.com has a recruiting article up that lists the "instant Impact Players" from this year's class. The first player listed is Cliff Harris, who they believe might get a chance to play soon given Bryrd's departure and the readiness of past DBs from his high school to play at the collegiate level. Oh, and that Bryce Brown guy is also listed.
- Ted Miller picks the overrated and underrated players from the 2006 class for each of the conference's schools. For Oregon, those were Cody Kempt (on account of his transfer) and C.E. Kaiser (who became a starter last year).
- Just in case all this 2009 news is weighing you down, here's a nugget about next year's recruiting class. Ducks Attack reports that the Ducks appear to have their eyes on Roy Finch, a prep RB from Florida. it looks like Oregon hasn't yet offered, but Finch has us in his top three.
- The baseball team practiced at PK Park for the first time yesterday. It sounds like the players were pretty excited after spending the fall practicing at various local high schools.
- Finally, in basketball news, Bob Clark blogs that both Dunnigan and Crittle skipped practice yesterday. Both should be back tonight and be ready to take on ASU Thursday.
As always, post any other links or your comments below.
Go Ducks!

Daryle Hawkins
Interesting recruit. I like it. He’s got good speed and seems like an intelligent kid, shouldn’t have any academic problems. Even though he’s ranked as a 2-Star prospect, I seem to recall that even Patrick Chung was rated as a 2-Star out of high school. We have great coaches and I have full confidence in CK’s system and coaching to yield a tremendous upside on this kid.
Interesting indeed...
6-4, 190 lbs., with a 4.5 40-yard time…and all-state springs…recruited by the new receivers coach. Sounds like the Ducks just landed a nice WR project with lots of potential.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
And with our track record with QB injuries...
Can we ever have enough athletes back there?

Sounds like a Drew Davis type.

Stars are laaaame...
It’s nice to see a kid ranked highly, like a 4 or 5 star, but it’s easier to slip between the cracks than it is to get into those rankings. There’s very little science to it. A lot of the time it’s simply, “He’s fast and looks strong and athletic. Boom-4 star!”… then the kid never pans out. So yeah. I think this kid is very intriguing. Probably very raw with a lot of room for improvement.
Here's another article on Hawkins...
Sounds like the quite the whirlwind for him.

Moseley quoting Braxton Lane on his father...
Lane’s father, Carl, was a running back at Oregon State in 1985-86. "He’s good friends with a lot of the coaches at Oregon," Braxton Lane told Scout.com last summer. "He’s a Duck fan, too, even though he played for the Beavers. It’s not a big deal. He just knows a lot of the guys at Oregon and is real friendly with the coaches. Even when I was younger I always kind of liked Oregon more."
IF he ends up at Oregon, this is the Ducks answer to Marcus Wheaton. A big-time baseball guy with Beaver roots possibly in a Duck uni. Love it.

Plus...
He’ll probably be better than Markus….IF he shows up.

Really?
Other than speed and athleticism, what leads you to believe this?
Addicted To Quack [dot] com; In other news, Ropert was mauled by a velociraptor yesterday and sustained a life-threatening ACL injury and a pulled hamstring."
he’s not going to oregon state.
It's spelled "M-A-R-C-H-I-N-G-B-A-N-D."
I support inroywetrust in his support of The VD Special in his support of me supporting Roger Kieschnick in his quest to becoming the best Kieschnick ever to play professional baseball.
If you look above I point out that they’re pretty even… saying one will clearly be better than the other is kind’ve unfounded.
Exactly why I asked Jared this.

If I had a choice between Lane and Wheaton...
And I knew both would play 4 years, I’d choose Lane. He’s definitely faster (Scount has him at 4.31), and seems like he’d be a better fit for our offense than Wheaton would. OSUs offense may be able to take advantage of that. Our type of offense doesn’t as much, and size isn’t as big of an issue.

So, in essence, you meant,
He would be a better player for us. I can resign myself to the fact that because they’ll be going to two vastly different systems, they will always be apples to oranges in less one really falls off a cliff or the other really steps up and/or thrives in his system.

I think Lane has a higher ceiling overall. He’s obviously incredibly athletic. I just seriously doubt we’ll see him on the field.

Just because Scout or Rivals has their 40 listed
Doesn’t mean it’s true
How many guys are listed as 6’2", and then end up being 6’0??

Sorry, my sarcasm detector was malfunctioning. I thought you were talking doo-doo. Anyway, I think after looking at times, sizes and what little film I can find it’s hard to judge what either player will do let alone compare ’em. At least for me.
Agreed.

Local news story about Malik
here. Mildly interesting.
I have to go in about half an hour for school.
But I’ll leave you guys with this to play over and over again for the day.

This post and the above one are more fitting for the signing day open thread.
Whoops.
