Open Thread: Signing Day
Signing Day is here! And we'll be haning around here all day to discuss anything that happens. GoDucks.Com will be announcing all received letters of intent on their twitter feed, and we'll keep an updated list here throughout the day. Apparently ESPNU will be having a 9 hour signing day special. So kick up your feet and start hitting the refresh button.
GoDucks.com also has a capsule page, that will have links for every player, and information according to the main scouting site.
For something to tide you over in the meantime, Moseley did a profile on two JC defensive linemen recruits that signed earlier in the year, Zac Clark and Terrance Montgomery.
Here's a list of signed and received letters of intent:
- Diante Jackson, WR, 4*. This is the first surprise of the day, and is a HUGE get. He de-committed from Oregon early, but has come back.
- Cliff Harris, CB, 4*. He is one of the top corners in this years class, and could be a shutdown corner. He now must continue to work to make grades.
- Braxton Lane, WR, 4* Junior, did not play football his senior year. May go pro in baseball.
- Trevor Fox, OG, 3* from California. For more information on Tervor, check out this DucksAttack profile.
- Bryson Littlejohn, LB, 4* JC. He is expected to be on campus during spring term.
- Anthony Anderson, DE, 3*, #38 ranked DE by Scouts, Inc.
- Jackson Rice, P, 2/3*
- Taylor Hart, DE, 3*. Ranked #26 DE by Rivals. From Tualatin, OR.
- Boseko Lokombo, LB, 3/4*. #10 Scout MLB, #27 Rivals OLB.
- Mike Bowlin, K 3*. #3 Scout, #4 Rivals.
- Everett Benyard, OT 3*. #32 Scout, #69 Rivals.
- Avery Patterson, CB, 3*. #47 Rivals, #49 Scout.
- Daryle Hawkins, QB/WR, 2*
- Karrington Armstrong, OL, 3*, 6-2, 296. He was also the Nevade State wrestling champion.
- Michael Clay, LB, 3/4*. #14 WLB by Scout.
- Nick Cole, WR Scout 2*. 6-3, 185.
- Justin Brown, DT 2/3 *. #65 Rivals, #73 Scout.
- Keaton Arden, DE 2*.
- Brian Jackson, DB, 3*
- Wade Keliikipi, DT, 2*. He's big, and despite the star rating, was the top DT in Hawaii.
- Andrew Iupati, DT, 3* JC
- Jamaal Burrell, OL, 3*
It looks as if Tyrece Gaines was misreported. He still has not decided, and will be taking some time to make a decision between Oregon and Oklahoma.
We'll be updating this throughout the day, so check back and comment often. GO DUCKS!

Diante update...
SBNation Colorado blog Ralphie Report is waiting on Diante just as we are. Apparently, he’s making a decision at 10 PST.

Here's a comment from a Raplhie Report commenter..
I’m terrified of losing Jackson to Oregon. We need playmakers badly, and he would give us an immediate spark. From what I’ve been able to see from his recruitment, his heart really has him wanting to play for the Buffs, but his family has been pulling for him to play for Oregon for quite some time. At this point, I’m ready to throw my hands up in the air and say he’s 50/50. It’s my best guess.

One more comment, this one from RR manager irish1611
it has been a two horse race between OU and CU since spring. Diante committed to Oregon first, then decommitted and went to CU. Now his decision is up in the air. His mom and grandma want him to go to Oregon. Arizona State has now entered the picture as well. He is a great kid, just getting pressured by his family. His dad also lives in Portland so that gives the Ducks an advantage as well.

Re: Diante
I’m working in Boulder, following CU, and they’ve been pining for Jackson forever over here. They really thought he was going to go to Colorado after he de-committed, but it turns out he chose Oregon.
Both schools would be able to put him to use as, while I think we have decent quantity at WR, they lack both that and quality. He likely would’ve been their second-best signing behind an in-state DE/DT.
Hopefully he’s got better hands than 50/50!

you shrugged when a guy who had offers from USC, UCLA, Cal, etc
Chose your rival, even though his cousin is one of the most famous players in Oregon history?
That’s a hefty shrug. Come on man. Riley and Co know who they are signing. The Oregon coaches wanted Wheaton. And rumor is, they thought they had him in the bag because of his name, and didn’t recruit as hard as they should have

If you're sitting here telling me that you wouldn't have been ecstatic if Markus Wheaton
had signed with the Ducks, then I’m calling BS.
The kid is an athlete. Sub 4.5 40, tall, and your with your depth at WR he might have come in and played right away. You keep taking your Cameron Colvins, I’ll have my Sammie Stroughters
And didn’t somebody post a comment a few days ago about a former Beaver running back’s son who was committing to play for the Ducks, and somebody referred to it as “our Markus Wheaton”??

Look the point is
The Oregon State staff knows that they aren’t going to steal away many kids from UCLA, Cal, USC, Oregon… it’s going to be very hard to win those battles… Michael Phillip was one of those battles (4-star Guard, rated as #1 guard in the country), but it comes rarely..
My point is that you can’t act like you didn’t want Markus Wheaton, just because you didn’t get him.

He fits our offense better. And basically, from the meager things we can see, he’s more athletic.
For the various styles of receivers, I’d take Diante over Markus a million times (and they are very comparable). Lane is a different style, and if he plays, which is VERY iffy, he has a great shot at being very productive in the offense.

You are correct. I know I wanted him to come to Oregon. At the same time I’m not all fired up or upset about him not coming. You just move on and hope for the next kid. I think that’s what you are saying though…I have to agree with you that if people are saying they don’t care that I doubt that is true. I think people care, just not as much as if some program-changing recruit didn’t come.

I don't recall anyone saying they didn't want Markus.
Though I could be “mis-remembering”.
I think most of us weren’t going to get too hung up on not getting him. Of course you want a guy like that, but not getting him wasn’t the end of the world. I for one sure didn’t want him just because he was Kenny’s cousin – that’s just flat foolish.
Good player. Best of luck to him. We got ours.

This is the thing that irks me about Beavers fans the most
They feel like every single player who goes to Oregon over Oregon State has no desire to work hard, regardless of the talent level. Heaven forbid that Oregon lands a talented player with a strong work ethic who legitimately wants to improve his football skills. Colvin is a relatively poor example given his early immaturity and late-career injuries, but a certain guy named Haloti Ngata was pretty highly touted and he did just fine.
You can advertise yourself as the “blue collar, lunch-pail” program all you like, but you don’t have exclusive rights to the lunch pail. Hard work is hard work. Both programs have been successful because both teams put forth the effort to be good at football.

My point was that Duck fans were acting like it wasn’t a big deal not getting Wheaton when he verballed to OSU a few weeks ago (which as I pointed out, doesn’t matter now, but it was a big deal back then because of the lack of depth at WR), and the original comment was “just goes to show you the difference between recruiting at Oregon and Oregon State” as if getting a commitment from Wheaton wouldn’t have been a big deal

As for the hard-work, lunch pail attitude
It’s hard to give Oregon the “blue collar, lunch pail” attitude with the multi-million dollar facilities, the flashy jerseys, the “half-shirts” by the “D-Boyz” to start the year, the flat top haircut by Thurmond? Ok, not a big deal, but it is an attention thing— it’s all flash; not bad and I’m not saying those guys don’t work hard, but it is flashy

Yeah, we are two different programs, but...
Calling out the defensive backfield for wearing “half shirts”, having a well-published nickname and having haircuts we could never wear? For God’s sake, man, they’re just college students being college students! We don’t make fun of Jeremy Francis for his dreads or Tavita Thompson for his foxtail because we don’t care. It’s an expression of personality. And absolutely none of it impacted their play on the field. No, not even the D-Boyz thing. They christened themselves with a nickname because they’re a close-knit bunch on and off the field. If Beavers fans have a problem with that, I can’t say I stand behind them.

It is a flash thing… When was the last time you saw a team wearing half-shirts? 1998? Who started that fad, wasn’t it Thug U? It’s all flash. Like I said, its not bad, just different. But it is flash and that was why I said it doesn’t lend credence to the lunch pail attitude

I just can’t see why it’s a big deal. Their play is certainly a big deal. A nickname is what it is. And last time I checked, they’re not actively trying to emulate the Dennis Erickson-era Miami Hurricanes. They just wanted to play good football. They didn’t, but that was their goal.

I'm sitting here telling you I wouldn't have been ecstatic if Markus Wheaton
I was way more disappointed that OSU got him than I ever would have been happy we got him.
But really it’s all about his name, if he was Kenny’s cousin but his last name was Smith, it wouldn’t be a big deal at all. Realizing that kind of made me not care. This is also called resolving cognitive dissonance.

That’s my point. You guys acted like it didn’t matter (which now, it doesn’t look like it does, as you’ve signed a pretty solid WR class) but back then when Wheaton committed, Jackson was a CU commit and nobody had really heard of Lane, it should have been a big deal

Some people were flipping about Markus
I was never one of those people. I really couldn’t care less what his last name is. I think that being awesome is much more important than a last name.
At first, having Wheaton not commit to Oregon was a bummer, only because we needed some WR depth. But now, we look to more than have that, and the coaching staff hit their targets with Jackson, etc. and Markus is really not a big deal.

Exactly
That was all my point was— who his cousin was aside from the fact that when he committed to Oregon State, Jackson was a CU commit and you were lacking at serious WR depth, and then proceeded to act like it didn’t matter because of who his cousin was, but in reality, it did matter

Single recruits don't matter...
Except in rare cases. Recruiting is about numbers and consistency. And honestly, if we didn’t get ANY receivers in this class, there would have been a crapload of bitching by a ton of people. But in the long run, it wouldn’t have been a big deal.
Recruiting is rarely about single players. It’s about cumulative results over long periods of time. Which is why it’s silly to think that losing Markus Wheaton some time before signing day mattered.

WR depth is always a good thing, his measurables checked out just fine...

The keys are going to be free safety and consistent pass rush
I’ve been harping on that all offseason, but last year, we didn’t have a Free Safety. TJ Ward was terrible at playing that position, and was the biggest reason for our failures in the pass defense. We didn’t have anyone to cover deep if a CB got deep. This led to adjustments, basically everyone moving back, which helped with pass defense, but also gave away the short yardage stuff. But without a free safety, that’s what happens.
Losing Byrd will be tough, but there are adequate players there that, if they have free safety help, will be fine.
Our linebacking corp could be one of the best we’ve ever had, and it will be deep as hell.
Defensive line will be a concern. We lose a lot, but we should have DTs to plug in. At DE, we keep Tukuafu, which is great, and have some experience on the other side and a JC commit in the mold of Nick Reed.
So basically, if we get competent free safety play, I think our defense will be better statistically than last season.

The thing about "in the mold of Nick Reed"
Is that Nick Reed didn’t really have a good mold at all, undersized, not quick, but tenacious as hell. Arguably the hardest working man on the field all year, both sides, aside from maybe the Husky game and their Juan Garcia.

You could say we lost a lot, but we DO have TJ Ward and WT3 back in the backfield. At the end of the year Casey Matthews and Spencer Paysinger were playing most of the time at LB, and Eddie Pleasant was coming on. All 3 of them are back, along with some good LB recruits. The D line is where we are hurting the worst…we lost Nick Reed, Harris, and Linehan. We did get to keep Will Tukuafu, who was playing great opposite Reed.
T. Jackson seems most likely to start in Byrd’s absence IMO. TJ Ward was KILLING FOOLS at the end of the year. If we get some good D-Line replacements I think we’ll be fine.
Does anyone know if we have 4* or 5* d-coordinator signed yet?

Regarding all our WR sets...
Don’t forget that we have Ed Dickson and Malachi Lewis, who seems perpetually underused, to help us out in that regard. I think we’ll be OK if Jackson proves ready to play as a true freshman. Remember, Davis is coming off a torn ACL.
That all said, Holland had something click last year, and I’m really excited about Dion Jordan’s potential (if he hits the books!). This position group is a fairly big question mark, but if Jackson can step up right away, and Jordan and Garrett Embry can contribute, we might make out OK with less depth than we’d like.
by Freeing Ray Schafer on Feb 4, 2009 3:30 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
We really don't even need Jackson this year...
We will most like have Davis (I just have a feeling), Dion Jordan, Jamere Holland, Chris Harper, Maehl, etc.
Jackson could play at times, but he’s not gonna need to contribute at all for us to have a very, very good offense.

Also, here's the DL picture (as I see it):
DE: Will Tukuafu, Kenny Rowe, Brandon Bair, various other names. I think we’ll be OK with Zac Clark officially in the fold. Even in case of injuries, we have Terrell Turner and Dominic Glover.
DT: Tonio Celotto, Simi Toeaina, Blake Ferras, and…um…hmm…crap. Thank god for Montgomery, and an excellent job, BTW, by Rob Moseley on that piece. No doubt.
It’d be tough to stomach, but I’d slap redshirts on every prep D-Line recruit we’ve got and see how well Iupati works out at DT. If we can get away with a thin defensive line rotation, I think we’ll be OK. I’d like to see Celotto and Montgomery start, with Toeaina and Ferras in backup roles. Or, for a twist, maybe play Brandon Bair some at DT?

Quite honestly, the biggest recruiting news today was USC
Losing out on Teo, Jenkins, and Burfict: 3 of the top LBs in this years class
And all 3 of them mentioned to some degree that is was USC’s pursuit of each other that led them to other schools: basically, SC could have nabbed any one of them individually, but went after all 3 and lost… Finally some kids are not wanting to practice for 3 years and get 1 year of stardom and a big NFL contract but rather play for 3-4 years and get a contract

Yes and no.
I say no because, especially in the cases of Jenkins and Burflict, the devaluation of the verbal commitment made this year a much more open recruiting year. And I can imagine that 2010 will be as bad, if not worse.
I have no problem with kids going to as many schools as they want. But I think playing with schools like some top prospects do denigrates the sport and the kids themselves.
by Freeing Ray Schafer on Feb 4, 2009 4:00 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
I hate the soft verbal bullshit or whatever, or “I’m going to commit but still take other visits”
There’s nothing wrong with just saying “I don’t know yet”
I can understand the kids doing this, loving the attention and what not that comes with a “commitment” but where are the coaches and parents to say “just take your time, figure out where you really want to go”
