Morning Quack Fix: 3.26.09
All eyes shift back to the NCAA tournament today, so there's limited quack news going on.
- Local product Antony Kreitz hit a 3-run homer to help the Ducks baseball squad to a 6-4 victory over Sacramento State Wednesday. Bob Clark of the R-G has the whole story as the Ducks wrap up their non-conference schedule.
- On the smaller diamond, the Ducks softball team closed out their non-conference schedule with a doubleheader sweep of Seattle U. The Ducks raised their record to 10-17, but that's the worst start for the Ducks in several years and they now head into a brutal Pac-10 schedule.
- Oregon tight end Ed Dickson comes in at #16 on Ted Miller's Top 30 Pac-10 players list. See Miller's notes on Ed.
- Jason Vondersmith of the Portland Tribune is the latest reporter to catch up with Chip Kelly as CK makes the obligatory media rounds heading into spring ball. Kelly says that while his role has changed he will continue to be a teacher first.
- Kerry Eggers of the Trib looks ahead to tomorrow's renewal of the baseball Civil War. He says 12,000 or more fans are expected for the Saturday and Sunday games...this should be a great event.
- Lacross player Ilsa van den Berg is this weeks GoDucks.com Student-Athlete of the Week.
That's about it on a slow day. If you find anything else of interest please post it. Otherwise, may your day be Duckie and your brackets not go bust!

Oregon is becoming a player in South recruiting...
From the ESPN South recruiting blog, Oregon has been making inroads with many players from the most talent rich area of the nation. This past weekend, ESPN 150 watch lister OL JaWuan James made an unofficial visit to campus. I’m sure that having the best O-line coach in the country didn’t hurt things.
Seeing recruiting strides made in this area are great. If Oregon wants to be a national player, we have to recruit out of state. There are just too few good kids out of the state of Oregon. The south is simply loaded with talent.

How much longer can we hang on to Greatwood? If he was a strong candidate for the Cal Poly job – an assumption on my part, we only know he was interviewed – is he a viable option at some point as offensive coordinator at UO?

I really don’t know… I’d like to keep him for a long time, though as with all coaches, his success could lead him elsewhere.
However, he’s been with Oregon for a long time, starting as a grad assistant in 1980s, and then came back in 2000 after following Rich Brooks and then moving around a bit.
I was thinking that having him be offensive coordinator wouldn’t be a bad idea. I am kinda doubtful that a true offensive coordinator will be hired for this season, and that a QB coach will be hired instead. And then a promotion will be made in a year or two to whoever is most deserving.

Speaking of players from the south
If ATQers have not had a chance to see some video clips of running back commit Ethan Grant (Coconut Creek, FL), you can check these out.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens next year, with him and LaMichael being very similar in style. We’ll definitely need a bruiser that can be a change of pace.

Agreed. If the Purdue game reminded us about anything, it’s the value of having a power back who can plow some tough yards up the middle. There are some 2010 recruits the Ducks are looking at with some serious size, but we might need a JC guy for an immediate impact.

Power backs are great for the second punch thing. Let the hack and slash speedster get the defense tired, and pound their tired bodies with a bulldozer back.

That said something along the lines of “Let the Jeremiahs tire them out, then let Blount ram into their exhausted shells.” That was really the most brilliant way of putting it.

Ted Miller has another post on Chip Kelly...
Nothing new really, but worth the read.

I like the ample Chip-watch that Miller's been doing lately...
…but there has been some retread in the stories.

Jeremy, (or anyone),
Are you making the game tomorrow?

Not tomorrow, but I will be in Portland Saturday and am looking at possible going to that game.

Kent
We all wonder what will happen with Kent and that if he is fired, Few is chief to replace him. But who would make a better replacement: Few or Billy Gillespie (assuming Kentucky gets rid of him)?
Interesting you say that.
Just last night I was wondering about maybe having Billy Gillispie, I like the guy.
