Poll: Was keeping Kent the right move?

Ernie Kent

Ernie's back in the saddle after the Oregon athletic department announced they will retain him as the Ducks' head men's basketball coach.  It was also announced that Arizona assistant coach Mike Dunlap, who turned down the Wildcats' interim head coaching job after then-coach Lute Olsen's sudden retirement, will join Kent's staff as an assistant, replacing .

So, after beating this topic into the ground the past two months, why don't we keep this poll simple: Was keeping Kent the right move or the wrong one? Answer why in the comments.

Right move

I’ve said before that Kent deserves every opportunity to open the new arena. Adding Dunlap makes it a no-brainer, in my book.

I wouldn’t have a huge problem either way. I think it’s probably better to give Kent another year or two.

Bleh

I’m not a pro-Kent guy, but still, no one deserves to be jerked around like that, even if you only win 2 conference games. Scheduling conflicts between PK and Ernie? Doubtful. The writing’s on the wall. In my opinion, they might as well have just hired Dunlap as head head coach, not associate head coach. They’re taking a big chance on the Ducks having a considerably improved year next year. And if they have another disaster like this year, the first season in Matt Court will be empty. I don’t really like it.

P.S.- What the hell are Teondre, Crittle and Dunkigan doing shooting DUCKS in a park after finishing one of the worst seasons in Ducks basketball history? WTF?

Look at it this way, if we were in the NBA, we'd be completely amped up for a high probability of landing the #1 lottery pick...

we could have a starting five of me, JShufelt, Jay Canzano, Darrion Weems, and Amanda Pfugrad, and Matt Court would be full. It’s a new arena and it’s gonna be beautiful and enormous. There’s no way the product is so horrendous that people shun the new building, even the fairweather students.

That's will be true for the first few games....

But with rising prices, the economy, and poor basketball, they would have a very hard time getting close to filling it by the end of the season….

Exactly

If we can’t fill Mac for league games, what’s going to happen if we’re that bad in the new arena? After the glitter wears off, it’d be tough.

I disagree on the treating of Kent. This is a guy that makes a very large amount of money, and does so in a very public job. When you’re in the world of college athletics, you get all the benefits, and all the downfalls. The AD was looking at all the options, and was pretty open about that.

Also, if he were good at his job, we wouldn’t be having this discussion. As it is, he’s a below average game coach (at best), and that’s why he must worry about his job.

Just so I’m clear, you’ve said that he isn’t good at his job and is a below average coach yet you voted “yes” in the poll for retaining Kent as a good move? That doesn’t make any sense. If he isn’t a good coach and you want to win games, then it doesn’t make sense that you think keeping him is a good move. Why settle for mediocrity if that is really how you feel?

For the record, I think you are dead wrong about him being “bad at his job” and a “below average game coach”. His coaching flat out won us the Stanford game this year and the preparation for the Oregon State game after that allowed us to pull that one off too.

He has a terrible haircut and looks like a baseball coach I had when I was a kid (who was a jerk) so I voted No.

What?! I had to be open about my reasoning. That and I think UO has the budget to do better and all the duck fans I know want a change…

There is a lot that goes into being good at running a basketball program. Being a game coach is one aspect of that.

And oh goodie, his coaching won us one game this year. Astounding.

There was unfortunately no third option of, “I would have been fine with either decision.”

This has to be the first poll I’ve seen in quite some time with no JShufelt reference.

"When Bellotti attempted to shake the hand of Oklahoma State quarterback Zac Robinson after the game, Robinson offered his left hand. His right was swollen and battered from the Ducks' defense."

Hey!

I got the memo, just thought I’d keep it simple. You have to answer one or the other. We’re getting a true response here. The “I don’t care” response is a cop out!

You get that, JShufelt? You’re the equivalent of a cop out.

Right move

Give Kent a chance to caoch up his recruits. It makes too much sense to wait unitl the new arena is complete and maybe get a new coach then. Plus, there are a lot of “high profile” openings, Oregon would probably get stuck with some second tier guy, versus waiting and having a shot at one of the best. There is no reson why Oregon shouldnt be a top program in the country. I like the Dunlap pick up too. Supposidly, dude has SoCal recruiting on lock down. Hes the one that got Buddinger to Arizona. I hope he starts bringing all the studs up to Eugene now!

“Give Kent a chance to coach up his recruits” sentence.

He can’t. That’s been the qualm of all the anti-Kent crowd the past several years. Including mine.

This Again????

I have been crushing people on this topic for years now, starting with the Idiot of all idiots John Canzano 4 years ago. Duck fans are smarter than this, and we need to stop letting Dip$h1ts like Canzano or any of these other local media outlets tell us what we should think or do. These are ALL guys that have made a career by taking the controversial side of a subject just to attract a following. I told Mr. Canzano this on the air of his show, and go figure I got hung up on without a response.

Duck fans are smart enough to realize that there are going to be occasional down years. We are not UNC. I guarentee you that Memphis, UNC, Kansas, etc, none of them would fare much better than the Ducks did this year if they had 9 freshman.

Ernie Kent is THE man, always has been THE man, and will continue to be THE man. I just hope that these idiots don’t create enough of a backlash that Ernie is doing it elsewhere.
