Morning Quack Fix: 5.21.09
Okay, okay... So the Beavers are better at baseball. We get it.
- OSU trounced the light-hitting Ducks 14-4 in the sixth meeting of the rival schools yesterday, and Bob Clark of The Register-Guard asks a reasonable question: "Enough already?"
- In this week's Strategy Session, Fletcher Johnson of The Bleacher Report says Oregon's early football schedule will be a "September to remember." See his early preview of the early games. Also, Clifton Blevins contributes a list of the top 5 Pac-10 players at each defensive position. Several Ducks make the cut.
- Ted Miller says Oregon WR Rory Cavaille tops his "out of nowhere" list.
- The editorial staff at the Corvallis Gazette Times is in support of the Rooney Rule now being considered in the Oregon Legislature.
- My prescription for a slow news day: go to OregonGridiron.com and watch the UO motivational videos, again. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

Agree with Clack on that one
It doesn’t take Steve Phillips to know the Beavers are going to beat us pretty badly most times we play this year and probably next. Did the school really make that much money off 5000 people at a game in Salem? And I think the rivalry will do just fine without that game, just ask Ted Miller’s in box. Maybe I just hate loosing to OS and want less punishment, but we did play them A Lot this year.

Even most Beaver fans are wondering why
These last two games were unnecessary. The schools are trying to squeeze as much $$$ as they can out of this series

Nick Daschel over at Buster Sports says we have no experience at Kicker. Someone correct me if I’m wrong but don’t we get Morgan Flint, and Josh Syria back? Also didn’t we recruit the number one kicking prospect in the nation? This is the second time I’ve read that we have poor kicking, but I have to think that our kicking game is as strong as it has been for quite a while.

Morgan Flint is coming back but we lost Josh Syria to graduation. Our kicking game has been very inconsistent during the spring which might be why Nick is saying that. Remember, Flint really only was kicking the last half of the season last year. From the few scrimmages I’ve seen, the punting game will be a major concern.
Our kicking and punting recruits are both very highly touted but we won’t really know what we have until they get here in the fall

Josh Syria's graduating
Which, no matter the Tool Time bias you may or may not withhold, is a critical loss.
Morgan Flint is an accuracy kicker. His range tops out in the high 40s. There’s nothing wrong with this – it’s a very valuable kicker to have, and being a Senior I don’t see him missing more than 3 or 4 kicks all year. That said, Mike “It sometimes hurts me thumb and ring finger if I do too much” Bowlin is the consensus top kicker, though I would think it ideal to redshirt him and thus give him four years at the undisputed “guy” at Kicker.
Or, conversely, I could just walk on.

Here's a question
You’re in your senior year. You’ve been accepted to Oregon academically, but your only hope to get on the Ducks football team is by being accepted as a walkon. On the other hand, OSU offers you a partial football scholarship. What do you do?
WHAT DO YOU DO?!?!

Touché. But you know as well as I do that the standing rule in Corvallis is: Steal Your Own, This One Is Mine.

That "Oregon Gridiron" website gets better every week
I sent a link to the Videoboard to my Iowa Hawkeye co-worker, and he was green with envy. “This is awesome…why doesn’t Iowa do this…hell, why doesn’t every school do this?”

Good ol Nike!
I would say it’s mostly Nike that makes all this possible. I mean, there will soon be a Nike section on the website.

Good ’ol sports marketing department rich with student resources who are eagerly learning to produce high-quality promotional materials. These are done internally, right?

i believe so yes
the facilities videos crack me up, because TJ Ward isn’t the most gregarious on-camera personality, and then Walter Thurmond is wearing a cowboy hat. Yep, sounds about right.

The Oregon films team
It is made of student workers on video squad and a few adult employees. I’m trying to get a job there after graduation, but you have to know people.
