Roper to Transfer
Scout is reporting that Justin Roper told his teammates Thursday after workouts that he had asked for his release and will look to transfer from Oregon. His father Brad confirmed the news on Friday.
People know how much of a Roper homer I was but this is probably the best move if he wants to play somewhere. With Masoli entrenched as the starter, Nate Costa coming back and Darren Thomas in the mix as well, Roper always seemed like the odd guy out. All that being said, this is a bitter pill for me to swallow and leaves me asking some questions about our backup quarterback situation.

I'm actually moved to tears. No joke.
Maybe it’s just late at night but, man, this is a bummer.

If it's any consolation, congrats on the engagement man.

Wow that sucks
I like Roper despite what his detractors say the guy is a winner and plays with a lot of heart, a true over acheiver I wish nothing but the best for him. The question is where will he go?
Call me naive
but this really surprises me. Guys that transfer are usually buried on the depth chart. Justin has a very impressive Sun Bowl victory under his belt, and is one Boise State cheapshot away from being back under center. And what about the education itself? I know these guys pick schools based on the football programs, but three years into your education and you pick up and leave the school and your teammates? Methinks somebody is whispering about an NFL pipedream into Justin’s ear. I think very highly of Ropert and sincerely hope the transfer works out for him, but unless he ends up a starter at a program of UO’s caliber, this move doesn’t make sense to me. Of course, I’m sure Justin is very concerned about my opinion.
bummer for Oregon, but good for Justin
great quarterback, completely wrong system for him though. Standup pocket passer in a running offense doesn’t click, I hope he ends up somewhere he can show off that cannon a little more. Call me crazy…he reminds me of Peyton Manning at the same age.
I wish him the best.
I am sure that he is making this decision in his best interest and for that I cannot blame the kid. With that being said this is a major hit to the Ducks(or is it)?
As stated above Roper was the 2nd string QB going into fall camp and with Oregon’s recent QB injury past (knock on wood) he was a snap away from regaining the top spot. With his leaving lets take a subjective look at the 4 QB’s we have left on the roster.
Masoli- Great arm, legs and for certain the 1st string QB. If he stays healthy this is a nonissue.
Thomas- I feel he is the one who will be hurt the most by this departure. If Roper had stayed and been the 2nd QB DT would have surely been redshirted giving him 2 years to lead the team. Now that is looking less likely but still available.
Costa- In my opinion he is the wild card. If he can come back from the injury he can be not only a great backup but potentially vive for some PT not only in cleanup duty but as a change up to Masoli. The departure of Roper will be felt less if Costa can come in a solidify the backup spot. Who knows if he really shows something I think that there might be a chance that CK still redshirts DT and have Harper as the 3rd string emergency backup.
Harper- Lets not forget about him now. With Roper leaving he automatically gets back into the QB picture, even as merely another option.
CK has some more magic to show this summer but I think that in the long run this will not hurt the Ducks as much as some might think. I believe (and hope) that Masoli will stay healthy throughout the year and run rough shot over the compeition.

I'm not sure we can assume Chris Harper gets looks at QB now.
Don’t forget about incomer Daryle Hawkins.
In an ideal world, with one certain samoan QB starting the whole year, we could have Costa and Hawkins as backups, while redshirting Darron. This would get him an extra year, and have emergency usage of Hawkins available. As you can tell I may be a little irrationally excited about Hawkins.

I wouldn't personally buy a lot of stock in Costa...
After three knee surgeries and playing a down of contact this spring… I’d be shocked if Nate Costa every sees the field again short of an absolute “there’s no other QB available” emergency, or a few kneel down snaps late in a blowout as a sign of appreciation from Chip K.
We’ll always have the Sun Bowl, and a pretty gutty performance in the ‘07 Civil War that should’ve been a win. I don’t personally see Justin Roper as anything but a decent – if inconsistent – division one QB. I’m not sure I understand the rationale in leaving Oregon’s program. For a guy who’s likely going nowhere beyond college in this sport, he had a pretty good gig. Of course, I wish him the best. I hope wherever he goes he gets his degree. I think he’ll need it.
Depth is obviously a question now. The silver lining is that DT will now pick up Roper’s reps in the fall. He needs all the work he can get and will probably blossom into a superstar. Just wish Oregon could have redshirted him this season. I think that’s out of the question now unless I’m completely wrong about Costa.
I'm really tired of it not being football season.
Nope, he's not arriving til Fall.

I think he does simply because he has been in the system longer.
Maybe Hawkins comes in and impresses the coaches but as of right now there are 3 guys with QB experience in D I football with Harper being one of them. I am not suggesting that Harper will switch back from slot to QB but I am sure that come fall practice he will get some reps early on.

Hawkins is very raw as well,
converted to quarterback his senior year. If it comes down to Harper vs. Hawkins to carry the team, I’d go wtih Harper. I would be very scared either way.
As well, Masoli last year didn't come around until late July.
A lot of things can happen between now and Fall.

He was no longer the right QB for our system
I don’t blame him at all, but good luck to ya…….
Proud member of Duck nation!
He was no longer the right QB for our system
I disagree. If Roper doesn’t get the win in the Sun Bowl, no one is even talking about how Chip Kelly is a mastermind of an offensive coordinator. All people would be talking about is how losing Dennis Dixon ruined the year. Kelly took a guy that was not even close to Dennis as far as efficiency and put him into a position to guide us into winning football games.
We don’t have a “system”, we have a coach in Chip Kelly that understands his personnel, their strengths and weaknesses, and adapts to what those players give to you on the field. We have offensive tenancies, sure but Roper filled a niche at QB that Chip Kelly designed gameplans around and we were successful. There were several stories last year about Chip Kelly having to redesign certain plays on offense because of how short Masoli is. Masoli won the job. If Roper had won it, Chip would be designing different schemes to fit his talents.

Let's not forget
When Costa went down last year, Roper came in and was the starter. Injuries and better play let Masoli in the driver seat. Now that Masoli has settled in and is the driver, Roper needed a new car to drive. If he transfers to a D-I school, he will have 3 to play 2, yes?

I don’t entirely agree. While I think Roper fit alright with the system, because of Chip Kelly’ – Roper wasn’t really in a position to screw up. He let the O-Line and JStew carry the Sun Bowl.

you may be right but he could very well have screwed it up too. He was 17/30 for 180 yards and 4 TDs and no picks. He was still the quarterback of the team and had to perform. The coaching staff did its job and put him in the position to succeed by crafting a gameplan but it was Roper who still had to take the snaps and execute the plays, even if they were just handoffs to J-Stew. If those TDs are picks or he muffed a few handoffs or made other bad decisions, that game could have gone differently. His stats were a decent line for that game, even if J-Stew was the star of it.

Will be interesting to see where he ends up
Durocher went to a desperate Fusky program, and didn’t a QB go to Wyoming or something some years back? Where Ropert goes could say something—albeit minor—about Oregon’s program.
To bad
Gah all I wanted from DT this year was a head set, funny hand signs and a bright red shirt. To bad. Good luck to Justin.

Man. We’ve lost a fair amount of depth between Plu and Roper.
This one even more shocking than the last.

Georgia?
My guess is that he goes back to Georgia…last I heard thats where his dad was a QB coach … + Stafford is gone and leaves a hole.

“It’s a bummer, man. This is a bummer.”
I hate to see a talented guy like Roper go after all he has done for Oregon. I understand the move and wish him well. I can only hope that the coaching staff can uncover another diamond in the rough this summer and add to the roster or that Quinn’s hopes of Daryle Hawkins is as good as hyped.
May we hand you your taints on a silver platter...
My hype for Hawkins is entirely based on his tangibles and his interestingly low rank.
I see no reason as to why Chip and co. would offer a 2-star a schollie if he didn’t see some sort of underrated quality in him.

agreed
I seem to remember Masoli only being a 1-Star. I wouldn’t put much faith in the rating system, only why the coaches want them on the team.
May we hand you your taints on a silver platter...
That's just before he was ranked or scouted at all.
Bam.

Roper will be heading down a Division
He has used his Redshirt year already so the only way he can play two more years is in playoff division football. That’s really a shame because he has FBS level talent. He was never going to start here and outside of depth it is not a terrible loss.
People want to talk about S Florida and imagine Purdue never happened. Roper was good but there was a reason we stuck by Masoli while he was learning the offense.
As for Nate Costa, all bets are officially off. Roper’s transfer puts the #2 spot squarely in his hands. He has had knee problem after knee problem but, as the surgery used this time around is supposed to yield a stronger joint then your average ACL repair, there is reasonable hope that his knee will make more then just a cameo appearance at fall camp.
People also want to talk about the Civil War and Holiday Bowl and pretend USC and Cal didn’t happen last year. Guys have bad games, guys get injured, that’s the way things go. In the end, this is a bad loss because the dropoff after Masoli becomes huge. You either go with Nate Costa after 2 knee surgeries or Darren Thomas who has looked less than stellar so far in spring. If Masoli goes down during the Washington or Washington State game, no problem. If Masoli goes down during Cal, I’m seriously worried. Roper was a much better option as a backup than either Costa or Thomas and proved that again during the spring. In the fall, that may change but those guys will have to step up significantly. I would feel a lot more comfortable with Roper starting a game (in case of a Masoli injury) than Nate Costa or Darren Thomas at this point in the offseason.
Given our history of QB injuries in the last 10 years, it is unreasonable to think Masoli is going to take 100% of the snaps in game time.

I don't know what you're talking about
USC did happen last year and the Civil War didn’t :-P
Bummer about Roper, I didn’t think he got the credit he deserved

Rememer how they found blount?
internet recruiting search i believe…i’m sure there are a couple coaches that are scrolling right now.
Meahwhile, i completely agree with qsouther in the fact that the arrival of Dayrle Hawkins will make a big big difference as to whether DT gets a redshirt year. Although I feel like he’ll be a brad smith type player (not a bad thing at all)…I’m not sure that i’d want him at QB anytime soon. but hey, the san fransisco samoan turned out just fine :)
In my opinion, driving drunk with a ram in the back of a pickup still beats shooting ducks in a pond. -Graciously, Ben Michael Siegert.
What is the relevance to Blount?
Addicted To Quack [dot] com; Dear Joevan, Develop motor skills. Love, ATQ.
essentially he is saying that Internet Recruiting is a good way to find talented players and the coaching staff is probably doing a similar thing to find a good quarterback.

Blount was recruited to come and start,
if we go after a quarterback this spring our pitch line to him is, “we need a stop gap between Masoli, our dark heisman candidate, and Darron Thomas, the future of our program.” Not exactly an enticing offer for anyone. However, what do I know with Masoli coming last year knowing that Costa, Roper and two heralded freshmen were vying for the position.
we just need a guy who is mad people don’t think he is the real thing, and knows he can be a good player. Like Masoli.
