Morning Quack Fix: 5.28.09
Jeez, I take a few days of vacation and all sorts of excitement ensues. Here's what I could find in wake of the Harper/Roper defections:
- Yeah, so decent talent is going out - but also some is coming in. The Ducks picked up a verbal commitment from a highly touted CB named Terrance Mitchell from Sacramento. I like his quote: "I was going to camp with USC and Florida but I'm done. I'm a Duck." He is expected to enroll early and participate in spring ball next year.
- Mitchell's bio from Scout.com is here.
- Looking for the next Oregon QB? Rivals.com has confirmed that 4-star prospect Robert Bolden will make a visit to Oregon in June. Here is Bolden's bio.
- Oregon's latest two-deep roster shows Dion Jordan moving back to slot receiver in Chris Harper's absence and Darron Thomas - not Nate Costa - moves into the number two QB spot. Plus a few other changes.
- Evidently Ernie Kent is hearing all the whispers. He tells Kerry Eggers of the Portland Tribune, "...this is my basketball program." Check out a nice, long off-season Q&A with Kent.
- Kudos to the Portand Trib for sending a couple guys south to do interviews with Duck coaches... Jason Vondersmith today posted a story with George Horton, who say's he's to blame for setting some unrealistic expectations for the Ducks first baseball season in 23 years.
- The UO men's golf team continues to flirt with a top-20 finish at the NCAA Championship tournament.
- When the Oregon track teams contend for national titles in early June, it will some of the lesser know athletes who may make or break the Ducks chances.

I like Terrance Mitchell’s eagerness.
When it isn’t even summer, and a highly touted recruit says “I’m a Duck” twice in an interview… it makes me smile.

I liked the way Kenjon Barner looked running the ball in the spring game. I’m wondering – just wondering – if the Ducks can land a couple good corners, maybe Barner makes a position change?
I'm really tired of it not being football season.
Or start building a great to elite return unit. At least based on the returns, I’m not going to pretend I know a thing about our blocking units. But we are starting to open a steady flow of athletes that should pay dividends on returns.

Cardinal Newman 26, Rancho Cotate-Rohnert Park 7 – Jeff Badger rushed nine times for 122 yards and one score and senior quarterback Max Pond completed 15 of 17 for 192 yards and one score. He now has 2,263 yards passing and 21 scores and 921 yards rushing and 17 more touchdowns.
A post I saw in Moseley’s blog prompted me to go looking for info about Max Pond’s days as a dual-threat QB in high school. Check out these stats from his senior season where he led his team to a state title game. Very impressive.
Maybe a backup QB possibility?

This isn’t Duck related but I thought this was interesting correlation given what is going on in the world. Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayer was one of three judges on the appeals court that upheld the minimum age rule for the NFL, blocking tOSU running back Maurice Clarret from entering the draft.

And then Clarett went on to be a perfect example of the value of a minimum age rule. That guy was just not ready. Not physically, and definitely not mentally.
Sotomayor also prevented the MLB strike, FYI.
Round Robin?
Ted Miller has a post about Round Robin scheduling in the Pac-10 and the merits for keeping it or reverting to the old system.
I love that we play everybody, and the challenges of the Pac 10 schedule. And for a top team it doesn’t make that much sense. We should beat the lesser teams anyways, and do we benefit from not playing USC or Cal. It is like a hole in the schedule. But it would be nice to get that extra win for every Pac 10 team.

Let’s be candid. This is solely about money — ensuring max home games and increasing the likelihood of the conference filling all of its bowl opportunities by beating up on the Idaho States and UTEPs of the world.
I loath going back to the days where we miss Washington and Cal misses USC. Or worse, we miss USC and win or tie for a Pac-10 title only to have all Duck haters immediately apply an asterisk to the championship.
Chasing the money becomes a necessary evil when you consider Oregon was one of only 19 teams to make a profit last year..www.dailyemerald.com/media/storage/paper859/news/2009/05/27/Sports/The-Art.Of.Breaking.Even-3744219.shtml
I still think going back to round robin sucks.

With the SEC having double the revenue of the Pac-10, I don’t see how the Pac-10 can stay with the current system. The Pac-10 network won’t make up the revenues (if it even happens) and not going to two BCS games a year is degrading the reputation of the Pac-10 as a power conference. The perception is that we are weak because we beat each other up in conference.
Unless the BCS is changed, my gut tells me that it is just a matter of time before we go back to the old system

And the fact that the Rose won't budge
On its format, which is a very good thing (long like the historic Pac-10 v. Big 10 matchup) makes any playoff unlikely at best….
Although if we’d get a playoff for giving up the Rose, I’d take it…

Costa keeps getting hurt
And Thomas did almost get us a comeback against Boise State, so I agree with this choice…

At this point...
I’m assuming that Thomas is #2 because he’s not still rehabbing…
We’ll see what happens in fall camp. I’d rather Costa be #2, so that we can reshirt Thomas.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
It can't hurt to at least try to redshirt him.
I’m pretty sure you can burn as many redshirts as you want. So, if Masoli and Costa both get hit by trains, Thomas can brake a redshirt under an absolute emergency condition, as opposed to just waiting and seeing.

God I hope not
I don’t want to wind up in a situation where we say have a good team but don’t play USC (so therefore don’t get the credit if we beat them)…
