This is a bit early but... travelling to Eugene for the Cal game
Hallo UC Eugene fans,
I'm most likely going to be travelling to Eugene on September to watch the Cal-Oregon game and while I know this is really early I'm trying to plan some stuff out so a few answers would be greatly appreciated!
- I'm coming from Seattle. Is my best bet to drive down or fly down?
- Where's a good (and cheap I guess) place to stay that's close to campus/Autzen? I don't want to be in a bad area or in a god damn forest.
- What's there to do (after the game naturally) for someone who's not yet 21 (but looks 21)? Do they card?
- I hate asking this question but: racism. I'm Indian (the asian kind) and I'm usually pretty nervous when travelling to foriegn places (especially outside of California). Will I be fine?
- Your bets on Gameday being there?
Thanks!

Hmm...
1. Fly, probably. Depending on the time of day. Just try to be out of/past Portland by 3 PM or you’re stuck.
2. JShufelt’s.
3. Churn butter.
4. You’ll totally be fine in Eugene.
5. Way too early to tell.

2. the best westerns on franklin are deece, and a nice walk over the willamette to autzen
3. try and find a band party? i don’t really know.
4. i’d be more concerned with being a cal fan than being a minority.
5. if cal doesn’t eff it up and lose, then sure.

Depending on when you want to get into Eugene, I’d drive. It’s not that far, and will be much easier/cheaper than trying to fly into Eugene. Just plan not to go through Portland between 3-7pm.
As far as Gameday, other interesting games that weekend could be Iowa/Penn State, ASU/Georgia, Miami(FL)/VT, TCU/Clemson, Arizona/OSU. I think that Oregon/Cal will be the best game that weekend, by far, but with Cal/USC the next weekend, Gameday may not want to come out to the west coast 2 weeks in a row, so they might plan that accordingly.

But big picture, what other games are Cal/USC weekend?
They may not risk missing Cal/Oregon on the chance that Cal loses and Cal/USC not as big of a game

LSU/Georgia is same as Cal/USC
If Cal and Oregon both win their first few and look impressive doing it, they’ll both be ranked top 15, and Oregon could be top 10. I just don’t see any comparable matchup that weekend. If gameday has a sure top 15 matchup, they’ll probably take that over the tantilizing possibility of USC/Cal being huge.
Also, I think GameDay would come back to Oregon a month later for USC if the game was between undefeated Oregon and USC. The Oregon/Cal and Oregon/USC games are far enough apart that they shouldn’t affect the decisions on where gameday will travel.
I just think that the decision for GameDay would be either Oregon/Cal or Cal/USC, if they come out west at all during those 2 weeks.

Flying INTO Eugene would be very expensive. Getting a skipper over to Portland and driving… Eh. By the time you go through security, wait for for the flight, fly, and arrange for a rental car, you’d only be a few minutes from Portland, and a few bucks poorer than if you were driving.
I’m not in the Eugene area, so I can’t help with places to stay bit.
I seriously doubt that being a minority is an issue. I’ve never really heard of anything like that out of Eugene, or most places in the Northwest, for that matter.

1) Fly into Portland and drive down. Flying into Eugene will cost about double. If you can avoid driving South on I-205 through Portland between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. or 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., that’s a good thing.
3) Circulate among Duck fans or other Cal fans during the tailgate and maybe you’ll get invited to a campus party. Most of the bars are pretty serious about checking ID. Many of us tailgate for hours after the game as well, unless the weather blows. You’d be more than welcome to hang with us, though now that I’m over 40, I’m sure you’d find me and my buddies a horrible bore. All we do is drink, talk about hot cheerleaders, bash on the d-coordinator, worship Chip Kelly and the memories of Dennis Dixon, bash on bb-shooting basketball players, and bbq some great food.
4) I would be shocked if you had any race-related issues. Come into Autzen wearing foe colors, though, and you’ll probably have at least one experience with a way-too-drunk loudmouth asshole. Ignore him or her and know that the vast majority of us are happy to have you come and spend your money in our state (no sales tax…so go shopping).
5) See jtlight’s comments. He is wise.
I'm really tired of it not being football season.
If you are wearing anything that says Cal
even in the off-season, you will be yelled at. So expect that to be a regular occurrence on gameday. the Pheonix Inn is just across the river, good place to stay. The bars all ID. So if you want to have fun on saturday night, put on green and yellow and just start yelling Go Ducks, and you will find a party that allows you to enter. Be wary again, most house parties will throw you out for wearing a Cal shirt. But good luck on your journey.

As someone who lives in Seattle...
I have driven to every home Duck game since I graduated (minus the Utah State beating last year). So, I’ll take it upon myself to be the expert in this matter. I have never flown from Seattle to Eugene for two reasons: 1)Seems like a waste of money 2)Time savings are negligible. Flights are extremely expensive, parking is expensive and you have to go through the hassle of going through security, etc., etc. Hop on I-5 southbound and do get off until exit 182B in Eugene. Easy as hell to drive (there is a stretch just south of Olympia to Vancouver, WA that is 70MPH). Takes about 4 1/2 – 5 hours to drive. Just avoid Portland from 3:30 – 7 on Fridays. I usually leave a few hours early from work on a Friday and start my drive about 2. I then hang out at a friend’s house until 7ish and then drive the rest of the way down with no problems. Getting into PDX during rush hour isn’t that bad, its just getting south of the city that is the pain in the ass. We look forward to seeing a few Bears in Eugene next year.
Exit 182B?
Exit 182 will land you in Creswell — a nice place and all, but it’s a fair walk to Autzen from there. I’m sure he meant Exit 194B. The rest of SeattleDucks’ advice was great.
Sweet thanks for all the help guys!
Just one tiny questions?
What happens in Portland b/w 3:30-7? The Loch Ness monster?
In other words, Go Bears!
Traffic bro
you know a little somethin about that up in h*sky country yeah?

Actually I don't live in Seattle yet
I’m still finishing up school here in Berkeley! I’m moving in a few months… so I have no clue WTF to expect there too.
In other words, Go Bears!
Its no worse than traffic in the bay area
But it is more frustrating because you realize you live in Seattle so that always sucks

I lived in Seattle 8/07 to 11/08. To my surprise, I liked it despite the Husky fans (my hatred runs deep) all the UW-focused sports radio, dismal seasons from both the Mariners and Seahawks, and the long stretches of winter and spring days with no sunshine. My only recommendation is that you try to live somewhere near where you work. The commutes are often compounded by the weather. If you’re working for Microsoft, live on the east side of the lake. If you’re working downtown, get a condo or apartment downtown, or aim for West Seattle.
Great food. Lots of entertainment. Diverse population. Very friendly environment (until you throw on your Duck sweatshirt…not an issue for you).
I'm really tired of it not being football season.
That’s when I roam the streets in search of food to last me the evening.

Racism? Foreign places?
I’m sorry, but (and I am probably alone in my thinking here) is that really a serious question? Racism? I dont want to sound touchy but I find it a bit offensive that you would assume California is the only place you are safe and that everyone outside of it is questionable with regard to racism. Foreign places…not sure I get that one either. You are an American. A foreign place would be another country. You are definetely a Cal fan/student.
it's a fair question IMO
i grew up right next door to berkeley, and the diversity in the area is unparalled. my HS was pretty close to a 25-25-25-25 split (white-black-hispanic-asian), and coming to school in eugene, my first thought was, “damn there’s a lot of white people here.” i haven’t ever experienced discrimination here, but it’s a bigger issue here than it is in the East Bay. Not to say it’s a big issue. Just bigger.

There is certainly an abundance of white people round here.
Though, discrimination and Eugene cannot be further apart, in my opinion.

I don't see your point...
What’s wrong with white people? Are they all racist? I tend to think it’s a non-issue.
my point is coming from an area with lots of diversity to an area with less diversity, it’s not totally ridiculous to ask.

It's a good question and I wish everyone thought like you
I am an American and a Cal student. But for many my skin color and my ethnicity is what they define me by first. And I’m in no way implying that Eugene is racist but seeing as that I’ve never really been there I just wanted to know. Berkeley is for the most part fine (although two days ago I had a girl be racist to me but she was working at a dead end job at Safeway so I had the last laugh) and San Jose where I’m from has been fine. But even in California in places like the OC (certain cities – mission viejo, etc), Pleasanton, fresno, bakersfield, etc I’ve had a fair bit of awkward/racist moments. It was never more than awkwardness but it existed.
and like Takimoto my school in San Jose was 85% Asians, and 15% White so even Berkeley was a bit of a shock to me.
I didn’t expect Eugene to be bad but I just wanted to know if there was anything I should know about. Seems like there isn’t anything and if everyone thinks like you all would be great!
In other words, Go Bears!
Thanks
Obviously I wish the best for you and your safety and I wouldn’t want anything bad to happen you because of your race…stuff like that should never happen. I don’t mean to sound insensitive or mean, I just get rubbed kinda the wrong way about that kinda thing. It’s definitely a sensitive issue.
Oh no I totally see where you're coming from
Sorry if I rubbed you the wrong way
In other words, Go Bears!
You should drive so you can see all the crazy duck fans with their decorated cars!
Definitely my favorite part about driving from PDX is waving at fellow fans or flipping off Beavers.
But seriously, the drive from Seattle would be long so if it’s cheaper to fly I’d do it.
They card at all bars in Eugene so BYOB or makes some goof friends while in town. Also, make sure your in Eugene early to tailgate.

I would drive as well. Really would take the same time, but like others are saying, you need to be south of Portland by 3PM or the traffic will kill you
I’d recommend the Phoenix Inn on Franklin Blvd. Nice, safe right on campus. But if you are really short on cash, the Motel 66 is a hole in the wall, but its safe and right across from campus. Either way, book now if you want to get a room. They fill up really early.
You are more then welcome to swing by my tailgater before the game. Just remind me and I will tell you where its at. We are all in our forties but act like were 20. As far as after the game, just buddy up to someone who will give you s*@t about beign from Cal but they will know where a party is.
I understand your concern about being a minority, but seriously, if you lived here for a week you’d understand why its so not an issue. I dont think anyone here really notices the difference in race, especially around campus. (Springfield is another story)
Either way, it wont lead to any problems.
