Morning Quack FIx: Recruiting and Other Prep Odds and Ends
Not a whole lot out there in Duckland today. But, in happier new, only 72 more days until football!
- Ted Miller has some links which include a look at the Les Scwhab Bowl. The first is a live chat of this year's Oregon prep all star football game in which future Beaver QB Jack Lomax led the North team to a 32-14 victory over the South. Lone in-state commitment Taylor Hart played for the South team. The complete rosters can be found here (including the officials and chearleaders who participated in the game). The second is a feature from the Portland Tribune that looks at the reincarnation of the game that was formerly known as the Shrine Game or Oregon Bowl.
- Duck Territory takes a look at another Oregon 2011 recruiting target in Antwaun Woods, who apparently made quite the impression on USC coaches after a camp. But, in good news for the Ducks, it sounds like Woods is interested in leaving California for his college career.
- Duck Territory strikes again with a feature on Canadian WR Lemar Durant who participated in the recent Oregon Nike Camp. It looks like Oregon is interested in him at the safety position, though it sounds like he'd prefer to stay on offense at this point.
- Ted Miller blogs about why he thinks rushing may be down next year in the conference. The biggest factors? Big turnover on the offensive lines and what has to be an improvement in the passing game.
- Nick Daschel of BusterSports continues his ranking of the top 50 Pac-10 coaches with the mercurial Dennis Erickson coming in at #9. Erickson has spent nine years coaching three different Pac-10 teams and has had success at all three stops. But, as Nick points out, the real question is how long he'll remain at ASU. Should his constant searching for a better job affect his ranking in a list like this?
And, that's it for today's quack. Feel free to post any other links or comments below.
Go Ducks!

Any guesses on what the new Unis will look like?
Anyone got a clue? Should be fun though…

Redone wings
We saw it with the diamond plating, a debut for the last home game of the season. Then an updated version for the next year. So my guess is green, yellow, white and black sets of wings, but they will not be solid colors like the UA version. They will have some nice highlights. And all four helmets of coarse, fingers crosses for actual YEllow.

Andy McNamara over on Duck Feed from GoDucks.com said this “My take on the new duds, as a 30-something male sports fan: Outstanding. Cool enough for the kids and classy enough for the traditionalists”.
Could be something totally different than the wings.

Classy enough for the traditionalists = no wings. Just my opinion. We’ll find out shortly.
I'm really tired of it not being football season.

They make the uniforms look way too cluttered.

Yeah but...
Andy Mac, as cool as he is, also is the sports information director for Oregon football.
I’ll wait to pass judgment until we see them this afternoon. I hope to god it’s not worse than diamond plating.

Ted Miller's Latest "Don't Be Surprised" = Oregon's Defense
Posted late this morning, Ted suggests Oregon’s D may be improved.
Ted’s leaning on his instincts, I think, based on his contact this spring with Chip Kelly. I tend to agree with his speculation.
What I personally saw during spring scrimmages and at the Spring Game was a good, fast and deep group of linebackers. My personal ire towards Oregon’s defensive play – and Aliotti himself – for years has been focused on the linebacker play much more so than the defensive backs. I think the Ducks are now loaded at LB. I also think the defensive line is going to be better than many are expecting. I think these are the reasons Chip can’t get the cheshire grin off his face when he’s asked about the defense. As for the DBs, we have a couple real good ones and a couple who will have to step up.
Chip loves him some speed, and I think he knows he has that on the defensive side of the ball. As for the notion of Chip pulling back on the offense just a little for the sake of spelling the defense…I’ll believe that when I see it. There will be plenty of opportunity for predictions soon enough, but I think Oregon’s 2009 D will improve in points against by at least four points.
I'm really tired of it not being football season.

I don't think they could be much worse
than last year
I'm sorry Arby

actually they weren’t bad last year. Oregon was ranked #1 in conference against the run. Passing? Different story. If you look at the number of plays vs how many points were scored, Oregon is right in the middle of the pack. It only seems bad because of 1) all of the points we seemed to give up and 2) 3rd down stops and how bad our passing defense was in comparison to our run defense.
It all evens out but things weren’t as bad as they seemed. The defense was just average overall

And for a rule of thumb, if you run a quick strike, fast tempo offense, you’re total yards allowed are going to look bad.
I think as long as we run a Chip Kelly offense, folks need to expect our total yards allowed aren’t ever going to be great.

Did you watch UW and WSU play defense last year? Even Chip K’s offense couldn’t overcome those disasters.
