Media Wednesday on Thursday - The Pick #2
I'm a day late with Media Wednesday this week and I apologize. The week ran away from me clocking a 4.2, 40. For this week, I'm going back to a game in 2007 that provided one of the best moments in Duck Football history. At the time, this play was being called "The Pick #2" and helped seal a victory against Mark Sanchez and the USC Trojans. We might have been one Dennis Dixon ACL away from talking about this play as the greatest play in Oregon Duck Football history.

I think you guys all just like hearing Giansante’s voice.
"When Bellotti attempted to shake the hand of Oklahoma State quarterback Zac Robinson after the game, Robinson offered his left hand. His right was swollen and battered from the Ducks' defense."

I drove by Schmoe Schmiansante in his big SUV the other day.
He always has a pissed off look on his face whenever I see him.

He clips his toenails and then just, like, leaves them on the floor!

He provided guns and ammo to unsuspecting Duck basketball players.
I'm really tired of it not being football season.

Wrong. There was nowhere near the tension on this play as there was in the actual pick. And USC still had to get all the way to the end zone, but was still 35 yards away. Great way to end the game, but not close to the greatest play ever.

with two ACLs
There would have been an indescribable play by Dixon to score the Civil War winning TD… on the Ducks first possession. It would be remembered as the best play of the regular season. But the Pick will be number one until we finish a season number one. A NC is the only thing that will over shadow that moment.

I buy tickets from a lady that cried after that play...
“I am just so happy,” she wept. I would say that the energy in that stadium was definitely electric. One of my best Autzen moments.
I don't think I've ever heard a stadium get louder than the second Harper stepped in front of that ball.

Does anyone else think Sanchez is going to suck in the NFL? I can’t quantify that statement, I just feel it.

there is not a lot of college experience to pull from
I think he is a bust, especially in NY

i disagree
i can’t give you a reason why, I just think if he’s given time to succeed, he will. New York isn’t the best environment for this, but he’s shown he can be media savvy and can handle off-field pressure.

nah...definitely after blocking OU
we just had to stop USC from tying the game…OU was going for the win and we stopped ’em cold. Biggest explosion right there!

I was in the middle of crapping my pants until that pic. So I guess since I was in the middle of it, I still crapped my pants..kinda.
Best of the Decade
While not on the same level as “Kenny Wheaton’s Gonna Score!” (goosebumps every gawdamn time I hear/see it), this was definitely the play of the decade.
One of the only games I was able to watch live on television that season (for some reason vietnamese television doesn’t carry fox sports northwest…) I was in a bar at about six in the morning for this game, surrounded by people who couldn’t give a crap about the Ducks or college football. One of the best, most nerve wracking games of my life; the tension was palpable. When Harper came through with that pick I fell to the floor with exhaustion, relief and drunkenness. The only thing I could do was give out a “Whoo Whoo Whoo Whoo Whoo” as I did the homer dance in front of a very confused vietnamese bar staff.

i was watching at a bar in austin, texas
exact same story, but replace 6am with whatever normal time it was, replace “vietnamese bar staff” with “numerous fans of several different texas and big 12 teams”, and “fell on the floor with exhaustion” with “jumped up screaming”.
everyone watching their own games, me with one smaller screen, i yell, all heads swivel right at me, just like the scene from animal house.
i feel giddy, then stupid, then giddy
no comparison to vietnam, however, kudos!

I think we can all relate to that feeling
The end of game release of tension is a amazing feeling of relief. Go Ducks

Hey fellow Ducks!
Why the hate for Joe Gians? I mean besides his below par announcing? btw long time reader first time poster.
Hey Bob. I don’t think I’m going to nail all of the issues but I believe the crux of the issue is how he broadcasts. For instance, his call of the Boise State – Oregon game last year was fairly disparaging, calling it the Broncos’ Super Bowl and other remarks.
Here’s a link to a montage – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMS7O4xpLs0
It wasn’t just his calls of Boise State. He also did a nice job of calling out Arizona fans at the end of a game

All of that aside, I take issue with some aspects of his role in bringing baseball back and the whole OSN debacle.

Autzen Stadium is where great teams go to die." - J. Brady McCullough, The Michigan Daily.
dvieria really pointed most of it out.
While I understand it is an Oregon broadcast, I’ve found it to be a bit shameful for this guy to be the media face and voice for “Duck Sports”. I think he fails at his duty of being a responsible announcer because he been disingenuous to the other team, and even their fans. I don’t find his announcing to be respectful of Oregon’s opponents.
However, it’s evolved from that, to a bit of a.. Addicted to Quack meme to shamelessly put him down.
I have no doubt that he’s a quality person, and a nice guy to hang out with. But he needs to really improve how he treats and announces the opposing teams.
I would also like it for them to break down plays with a bit more intelligence – show why a play worked instead of marvel at the skill of the ball carrier.
Whew… I said all that without saying he’s an asshat.
"It’s spelled S-H-U-F-E-L-T-M-E-U-P"
I was watching that game at Quackers
And I am not joking when I say this. I was quietly chanting “Kenny Wheaton…Kenny Wheaton…Kenny Wheaton…Kenny Wheaton…Kenny Wheaton…” over and over again before that play was developing so as to summon the very alive spirit of Kenny Wheaton. The spirit found its way into the body of Matthew Harper and the rest is in Duck History.
My wife, two brothers-in-law and sister-in-law were with me as my witness.
