Morning Quack Fix: Ducks in heat, greater Rose Bowl access and Chung signs
I know it's the usual refrain on a Tuesday morning, but again the quack is a little light today. Hopefully, there's just enough to get your through the morning.
- Adam Jude has a story on the Ducks continuing their summer conditioning as the temperatures rachet up. How did Masoli handle the 102 degree heat on Monday? By wearing two black shirts -- including a long-sleaves. Jude also ends with a few notes in his preview on Moseley's blog that include an update on LaMichael James' injury and the appearance of Keenan Howry (one of my all-time favorite Ducks) at the workout.
- Ted Miller has a few blog posts up. First, a capsule of Oregon's offseason -- there's nothing really noteworthy for fans who have even paid the slightest attention over the last few months. Miller follows that up with a piece lamenting the slow nature of the offseason for the conference as a whole, noting that at least the Pac-10 media day on Thursday will generate a flurry of "news".
- I know Jared posted this in the comments of yesterday's quack, but I couldn't pass up the chance to get this on the front page. ESPN's Big 12 blogger (Tim Griffin) has a post about Oklahoma State using their embarrassment from the Holiday Bowl as motivation for the upcoming season.
- In BCS news, a change has been made to allow access to the Rose Bowl for qualifiers from outside the six BCS conferences. In fact, it looks like the Rose Bowl will be obligated to take a non-BCS qualifier the first time they lose a Big 10/Pac 10 representative from 2010 to 2013.
- And, we end today's quack with an update on Patrick Chung, who has agreed to contract terms with the Patriots and arrived to camp on time. Good to see Chung's all set to get started on his rookie campaign.
That's all for now. Leave your comments below.
Go Ducks!

In regards to the Rose Bowl change, maybe I could get some clarification.
Let’s say USC goes to the national championship game.
It sounds like to me, a Pac-10 or Big-10 team, which is more than qualified to be in the Rose Bowl will get shoved aside to make room for the “little guys” just because they “qualify”.

That’s the way I’m understanding it, too. Hmm. What’s the most appropriate term to describe what they’re doing with the Rose Bowl…cheapening?…whoring out?…
The Rose Bowl is already a dumb whore, having cheapened itself with a USC/Illinois matchup.

I like whoring out
though I think it is only supposed to happen once every four years at most.

Under the BCS rules
If your bowl loses a tie-in to the title game in a year that your city also hosts the National title game, you get the last pick of whom to replace them with. This is why Boise State ended up at the Fiesta for example (since the NC game was in Tempe that year).

Let’s say USC goes to the National Championship, Oregon is ranked #8 and BSU is ranked #9, who would get to go to the Rose Bowl?
PADO
Boise State
Since they are a top 12 ranked non-major conference team.
Oregon would almost certainly get a BCS bid though, just not the Rose.

Actually, not necessarily….
Depending on how the BCS chips fall and what bowls are picking when, Oregon could get the shaft. The thing to remember is that it’s highly unlikely that a Pac-10 team will get into a BCS bowl that’s not the Rose or Fiesta, if there are other choices.

I was wondering exactly what the “qualification” for BCS is for non-major teams? Is that it, top-12 ranking in BCS standings?
I could certainly see jtlight’s scenario becoming real in a season where USC is #1 or #2, on of Utah/BSU/BYU/Fresno St is #12 or better and Notre Dame meets it’s criteria. Oregon could be #6 and second place in the Pac-10…no way they get selected for the Orange or Sugar.
The Pac-10 stands to lose a lot of money in a scenario where an otherwise worthy 2nd place team gets bumped from a BCS game by a lower ranked non-major team.
I'm really tired of it not being football season.
Top 12 in the standings
Or Top 16 if they are ranked higher than at least one Big-6 conference champion (as happens fairly frequently in either the Big East or ACC now).

no way they get selected for the Orange or Sugar.
That’s what really gets me about this. It appears only the Rose Bowl is up for grabs in this manner. The Orange and Sugar still get to abide by whatever rules they want.
That’s what happens when the Rose Bowl is a bitch and picks a nine-win Illinois team….

turn this green! it be true!

Howard Schnellenberger you insufferable buffoon
This has me wanting to see Howard Schnellenberger get the next vacant football coaching job in the Pac-10 (probably Washington State, Arizona or Arizona State). Let’s see what he thinks after facing USC, Oregon, Cal, Oregon State, Stanford and UCLA week in and week out.
Yes, I’m sure Howard didn’t fill out his own form, but it is still “his” form. Douchebag.

No respect for USC either
But we’ll prove him wrong.

And if you’re a fan in the WAC or MWC, you’d like to punch Missouri’s Gary Pinkel in the nose. He’s the worst-rated voter.

Love that Tiller ranked us highest
He would know after all.

Hahaha
And Bellotti taking it to Ohio State. Interesting how much he likes Cincinnati though.

Coach Rick showing Ducks some love?
Only Purdue’s Joe Tiller (#10) ranked Oregon higher than UCLA’s Rick Neuheisel (#11). Six of the coaches that faced Oregon in 2008 participated in the coaches poll. None had the Ducks ranked lower than #13.
I’m guessing “The Ol’ Ball Coach” (#17) didn’t catch the Civil War. Never mind that the Pac-10 Championship and a Rose Bowl bid was on the line.
I'm really tired of it not being football season.
can we even be sure mr. spurrier did his own voting?
unlikely. polls, ugh, about as scientific as sea monkeys
