"I think it’s more hype than anything, honestly. Was he a five star (high school prospect)? Not putting down Taylor Mays, not putting down his athletic ability and what he’s accomplished. But just the (Trojans’) style of defense, they really just have him in the deep middle.
It’s really not a lot of action, I think it’s more just physical. That’s why he has a lot of hype around him because of his physical stature. He’s a really big safety — 6-4, 230. Those are really rare in college these days. Besides that, I think he’s a great player, though."

What is he getting at?
That Taylor Mays isn’t all that, or that he is overhyped?
I think Thurmond is an amazing football player, but Taylor Mays is out of this world. If the guy plays his cards right he could go top three in the draft, get Heisman consideration, blah, blah, blah…
What is the point of making the guy mad?
I heart taxes.
he could be right
As a physical football, and NFL, player Mays has it all. But could Walter be right that he is a bit overrated. For someone who plays deep safety he has very low INTs (too drunk to look it up). He is a big hitter and a great player. However, you could convince me that he is overrated. But it wouldn’t surprise me if we are wrong.
That said, I am always against pissing off USC
Sleeping under an avalanche with Cartman, wake me Sept 3.

Yeah. This falls under the don’t tug on Superman’s cape category for me. Last time we saw these programs making statements on the field, USC receivers were running wild down the field – with the ball – and Mays and USC’s defense were shutting down all aspects of Chip Kelly’s offense.
I'm really tired of it not being football season.
maybe i'm too old school
but i wish kelly would shut our guys up. maybe he does and these are just kids, and we all make mistakes, but there’s just a few too many comments out there this preseason for my taste.
right or wrong on the statement’s logic, since this isn’t a discussion of world peace, is far less the issue than: does speaking your mind help you, or your opponent?
i’m for letting any slight or perceived slight or even any innate “truth” simmer inside, motivating you alone, rather than others. if ya gotta express it – express it in a way that works for you and your team – in house, hype each other up, get ready to prove yourself.
telling your opponent “I’m going to prove I’m better than you” or “you are not that great” at any level of innuendo or interpretability is just a flat mistake in my mind.
if you can humiliate and discourage someone with Ali level talent, right or wrong, you might have a strategy of Ali level talk that works. we don’t. few do. usc, lately, does.
It seems like there’s been a lot of talk this year from duck players. It’s odd—maybe Kelly is a little less polished on the nuances of media relations and is letting his guys fly loose a little bit? That said, you don’t want to eff with SC. I guarantee every UO receiver went up to Thurmond III and gave him a big “Thanks buddy!” after reading this.
You can't look at a guy merely based off stats
Paper players don’t mean anything. Taylor Mays never misses tackles, he comes up with huge hits, and there is a reason they play him deep— he is one of the only players in college football that can cover that much ground by himself! His stats aren’t impressive because he is playing in a system that makes it so teams don’t go to him.
Taylor Mays is one of the best college football players in the country right now, and all Thurmond is doing is pissing him and USC off. You think Mays and the Trojans are going to be looking for heads on Halloween now? Bad move Walter, bad bad move.
I support Takimoto in his effort to support Roger Kieschnick in his quest to becoming the best Kieschnick ever to play professional baseball.
A college player talking smack about a rival?!
Well I never!

still flatly dumb
if common
agree with VD above, you think taylor mays or pete carrol see that, at media day no less, and just go “oh, hee hee, that silly wally, we love that guy, no skin off my back.” nope, a little extra oomph for the “f you” to be mouthed across the field this year.
