Morning Quack Fix: The D has its revenge; Ducks go high-tech with helmet cams.
Just three more weeks! Let's start with some encouraging news:
- Rob Moseley's Thursday notebook takes a look at a key milestone for both Nate Costa and D.J. Davis - practicing in full pads. Both are recovering from knee injuries, and both possibly hold key roles for the Ducks this season.
- Evidently the defense took revenge Wednesday for its Tuesday loss in competition day...causing Steve Greatwood to say the O-line took a giant step back.
- A close look at LaMichael James by Gary Horowitz of the Statesman Journal in Salem. Yes, mid-valley folks should get familiar with this young man, because I think we'll be talking about him a lot the next few years. HT@Ted Miller.
- Bleacher Report posted a "names to watch" list for Oregon. It's a good list. I think one miss is freshman Punter Jackson Rice. If his punting is even above average, that could be a big question mark answered for the Ducks.
- Helmet cams! Evidently Mark Helfrich used helmet cams with his QBs at Colorado as a training tool. Now the Ducks are trying it too. John Hunt of The Oregonian posted this story along with some injury notes.
- A few more juicy fall camp notes from Jason Vondersmith of The Portland Tribune.
- Seems the Pac-10 is working to upgrade the conference's bowls connections. Ted Miller reports that an agreement with the Alamo Bowl is getting closer. It appears the Pac-10's no. 2 team would go to the Alamo, no. 3 to the Holiday and no. 4 to the Sun Bowl.
- Fan Day is set for August 29th, at the Moshofsky Center, with players participating in split groups from noon to 1 p.m., and 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
- It can't all be about football can it? Galen Rupp is part of the promising new generation of USA track athletes. So is javelin thrower Rachel Yurkovich, who is looking to re-establish a U.S pressence in the javelin finals at the world championships. From a little earlier this week...Bob Rickert compliled a report of how some former Ducks are doing in their NFL camps.
If you find anything interesting, please post it in the comments. I'm planning to attend the afternoon practice today. I'll let you know what I see.

The Holiday Bowl move will be great for OSU under Riley. Now they can finally make a bowl better than the Sun Bowl! Alright!

I would love to watch that helmet-cam footage
I want to see some of that hot helmet-cam action!
I bet Uncle Phil has the helmet-cam feed in his helicopter.
agreed
I really want to see what the helmet cam is all about.

Find some old XFL footage
I don’t think it’s as cool as you might think
Someone posted Costa's helmet cam footage on the web
All you can see is Erin Andrews on the sideline.

I’m sure they’ll also be throwing rookie and NW native Mike Reilly (Central Washington University) out there to see if he’s worth having on the practice squad as well as Charlie Batch (Whom Dixon is challenging for No.2).
Most are saying Batch is getting to be too old to be number 2, but he’s a reliable backup. Yet Dixon could be thrown in for a couple snaps as number 2 on the depth. Which would probably translate to: Dixon will run an occasional Wild Cat, while Batch will step in if Rothlesburger goes down and Dixon would cycle in and out.

My guess is
As the #2 or 3 QB he’ll play perhaps as much as a half tonight.

We know Clemens will go into this weekend with the Jets as their starter at least. GO KELLEN!

Oregon State was "ready" too
Didn’t help them, we still beat them into the ground last year.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
If by “ready” you mean missing Quizz, then you’re damn right that as a team they were “ready”… I would say after that defensive performance/no-show it was pretty clear who was “ready” and who wasn’t.
That's funny...
because not one Beav would concede that the 2007 CW had something to do with Dixon being injured. In fact, all the Beavs took the high road and said we would never complain about injury. I love it.
Yep it’s been very funny since the CW listening to and reading Beaver fans pull the “but we were without Quizz” and " Moevao was injured" card to explain the loss. I won’t use the word “excuse” because, just as in 2007, injuries are a part of the game. It always boggled my mind whenever I would hear Beavers fans say that we were using excuses for the loss in 2007 when all we were doing was claiming that the outcome would more than likely have been different if Dixon wasn’t injured. The main difference here of course is that Dixon in 2007 would more than likely have given us the offense we needed to beat the Beavers instead of a close 31-38 loss in double overtime. However, having Quizz or a healthy Moevao last year would not helped the Beavers defense stop our offense last year in a 65-38 loss. Lack of offense, due to multiple injuries, lost the game for the Ducks in 2007 … lack of defense, despite having a healthy, top 10 defense lost the game in 2008 for the Beavers.
I am being a conspiracy theorist?
Do any of you ever notice this trend during fall camp(CFL)/Preseason(NFL) an area of concern(for a Ducks example the O-line) the coaches will come out the first few days of camp and give a good to adequate assessment of how the ‘group’ is doing. “They(insert group here) showed up today in practice and showed that they have been working during the summer.” Then about a week or so into camp that same group ‘takes a huge step back’. Am I the only one who sees this as some type of formula for lighting a fire under their asses?
Not to toot my own horn but I played college ball at a small southeastern school and it seemed like every year we(the O-line) would impress the first few days, ‘suck it up’ a week or so later and end up being just fine in the end all the while playing rather consistently.
Is this some sort of motivation for that particular group? Because if it is I am surely not knocking CK or Greatwood. They are college football coaches and I am not. Just always seems to come up in that sort of cylce of good..horrible…good.
To go out and ruin somebody's dreams like that, it feels real good," Oregon receiver Jaison Williams.
I think you can blame the fast start/lull/eventual recovery progression on the fact that practices get harder and harder and players eventually get the hang of it and make improvements. It’s natural for coaches to step it up and really challenge players too.
Especially this staff
Kelly seems to want his teams to go harder in camp than MB ever did. Which is fine, and especially if they want to work on speed, is probably a really good idea.

I'd guess a lot of it is pyschological
You give guys a cookie to let them know that they’re valued; get them on your side and buying into your vision and all that jazz. Then you knock em down a peg before they have a chance to get cocky.
After that, you just let them try to work their way back. They may have played almost exactly as well the second week as the first, but the psychological mind games dictate that coaches have to act as if they were amazing the first week and bed-crappers the next.
Does it work? I have no idea. I do know that a lot of people have made a lot of money writing books and giving seminars about this stuff.
I feel the need, the need...for speed!
A few practice notes
I attended most of the afternoon session and got to see quite a bit of 11-on-11.
No surprise, some of the guys are banged up. I spoke briefly with Rob Moseley who agreed the Ducks aren’t suffering anything unusual. The area getting hit the worst are the receivers. Guys I DID NOT see taking reps included Diante Jackson, Tyrece Gaines, DJ Davis and Jamere Holland. Still, Jeff Maehl was on the field and looking solid. Lavasier Tuinei and Dion Jordan were also getting a lot of valuable reps. One guy who’s worth keeping an eye on is sophomore TE David Paulson, who seemed to make several nice catches in traffic today.
I continue to marvel at Nate Costa. Easily throws the best ball of the QB group, especially on longer routes. He also scrambled effectively a couple times and appears to have little apprehension about running with the ball.
At times the defense dominated, especially up front. The front seven was throwing blitzes at the O-line and was getting disrupting the QBs repeatedly. I got the impression the defense still is feeling a little bitter over losing competition day. It wasn’t all bad for the offense, which rattled off several long runs and did move the ball effectively, usually with Masoli at QB.
…completely unrelated – Charlie Batch just came out as Pittsburgh’s no. 2 and just completed a nice long pass. Looks like DD is still no. 3.
I'm really tired of it not being football season.
After those two passes
looks like #3 is about right for him, right now.
theyre definitely giving dixon a long look this year though. batch is oooooold.

On the bright side, you don’t have to listen to Jaworski keep saying “Ory-gone” and Tirico saying “Ary-gun”
He got a tad impatient that 3rd down play – not that I blame him. Pocket wasn’t holding well. And – it probably SHOULD have been caught. Tough break.
He needs to get more zip, put less air under the ball. The long ball, he’s under throwing a bit. Still, he looks like he shape up.

I’m watching this…
And it’s weird – that goal line situation, I can’t see why some sort of spread option wouldn’t have worked. A boot leg left, with a pass option and pitch option.
Am I just too use to the quack?

Harris makin’ some plays! He’s tying up that line really well, giving the DEs and LBs some good lanes.

Did we (general fan base) under-appreciate that guy at Oregon?

I'll be honest
I thought Dixon was just going to be a transitional guy; an entertaining Fife, if you will. Instead, he ended up being transformational.
This is like a pre-season game thread. Good practice. Gotta get the rust off.
I'm really tired of it not being football season.
Dixon’s last pass in that drive was the best offensive play yet.

Watching our boy Dixon
mix it up in preseason football
Vick just signed with the Eagles
I think this means AJ Feeley probably has to find a new team. Too bad, I like the kid.

With Kolb injured, I don’t think they’ll dump A.J. too fast. But his days may be numbered.
I'm really tired of it not being football season.
With Kolb injured, With Michael Vick not having seen an NFL snap in two and a half years, and with the Eagles still unsure that he can play football (given they didn’t work him out before signing him), I don’t think they’ll dump A.J. too fast.

A.J. made a good case of “You guys REALLY want me to be your backup” in addition to maybe saying to other teams, “You guys REALLY want me to start” last night.
"It’s spelled S-H-U-F-E-L-T-M-E-U-P"
Three picks for Kyle Orton in a pre-season game for Denver? Broncos should be on the phone with Feeley’s agent right this minute. And if he’s going to be a back-up, maybe Seattle should give him a call. I’ve never bought into Seneca Wallace as an NFL QB…interesting athlete, but not really QB material. Get real Seattle, bring Touchy Feeley back to the NW.
I'm really tired of it not being football season.
God that escape play in tonight's game
Was so classic Dixon, love it!

Other NFL duck news I’m finding out:
Chung tied with first in tackles for the Pats, and also got his finger tips stretched enough to block a field goal. He made some good stops up front. He apparently laid in a few good hits on former duck AJ Feeley, whom was trying to, and making a good case, that the Eagles didn’t need to sign Vick. Feeley went 18/24 for 211 yards and had one TD, and made a good effort to win the game.
It looks like Oregon has had a bit of an under-the-radar success at DT, a thankless job. Harris made some good stuff happen for Pittsburgh, but another Oregon player had some action for da’ boyz in Dallas. Looks like he made some great pushes and was causing some trouble for the opposing OLine, though, as of this time, no recorded tackles or assists. As for Ngata, no clue, but my assumption is that he was a quiet beast as usual. No glory in nose tackle stats, but he’s arguably the best one in the country.
"It’s spelled S-H-U-F-E-L-T-M-E-U-P"
without ngata ray lewis is not free to dominate, with out Lewis dominating Ed Reed can not roam the secondary making plays, with out those two gys the Ravens D is not the Ravens D. Ngata is the key that unlocks everything. He is so vital to their D, and it is so awesome. BEAST

Amazing...
Tom Hansen is retired for about a month and the Pac-10 is already improving its bowl tie-ins. How that incompetent boob of a commissioner kept his job for 20-something years is beyond me.

Once upon a time, the Cotton Bowl was a pretty big deal. I was kinda hoping for a resurrection there with Big XII v. Pac 10 connections. Anyone know which pays more, Cotton Bowl or Alamo Bowl?
