Morning Quack Fix: Recruiting update. final scrimmage notes and some video clips
Good morning Duck fans. Not a whole lot out there this morning, but there are some video interview clips after the jump. Only 9 days left!
- Gregg Biggins of ESPN has an update on the four football recruits from North Carolina. While Gabe King appears to be leaning towards Cal, it sounds like Oregon has a realistic shot at the remaining three -- including four star athelete Keenan Allen who is also considering Alabama.
- John Hunt notes that the final fall scrimmage will be held tonight in order to help preparations for playing Boise State at night. With the season opener just over a week away, Tuesday's scrimmage will focus on making final decisions in any remaining position battles and getting in some more reps for the regulars. Moseley also has a breakdown of the practice schedule for the rest of the week. Rob Moseley also has a fall camp review, including answering the questions he posed at the beginning of August.
- Oregon and OSU get a little national love in a USA Today peice that looks at their chances of knocking USC from atop the conference standings. And, it's always fun to point out that USC hasn't won in the state of Oregon in the last three years.
- Nick Daschel ranks the fanbases of the Pac-10. And, Cal is #1? Really? Maybe I have been in Chicago too long...
There are also a few videos that I have included after the jump, so check them out.
First, here's a KVAL video of the latest additions to the coaching staff, Peter Sirmon and Rashad Bauman:
Here's an interview with Chip after Monday's practice. He even does his best Lovie Smith impersonation -- "Rex Grossman Jeremiah Masoli is our quarterback":
And, if you're interested in Morgan Flint's offseason routine:

3. Oregon: You’re No. 3 Duck fans, but I’m not happy about it. Oregon fans travel well in bowl games, and they do show up for games, so I’ll give them that. But in a survey of just about every person I know, Duck fans are the most annoying, entitled fans in the Pac-10. It’s really not close. I hate to lump all Oregon fans into one group, because some of them get it, that they are where they are because of Phil Knight’s deep, deep pockets. But too many of them don’t. We are Oregon, we are owed success, and if you don’t understand our superiority, then blank you. Here’s a news flash: without Knight, you’re Oregon State.
He hates to lump all Oregon fans into one group…but he’s going to do it anyway. Sigh.

I mean, I"ll be the first to admit that there are a lot of stupid Oregon fans, but has the dude ever met someone from UCLA, USC, or Washington?

Cal fans are awesome.
Addicted To Quack [dot] com; Six-hundred and ninety-four yards of total offense.
Washington No. 2?!?!
Ugh. Does “Misguided” have any qualifications in these rankings?

He kind of reminds me of a young Canzano. I did a quick Google search on him and just about every fan base has negative comments about him. Love this one (note the subtle name change).

"A quick survey of just about every person I know"
is the lamest measurement I have ever heard. Every single Duck fan that I personally know (and there are a lot of us) “gets it.” In my mind, getting it isn’t about understanding that Phil Knight has a lot to do with success, it is about modest belief in and dedication to your team.
My example #1 of crazy Oregon fans
Two years ago when UO played at Washington I was there and would smear that it felt like half the fans there were Oregon fans (even though it was probably only 15-20%, still pretty good).
Oh and I’m always seeing people in Oregon gear everywhere I go around the world. Heck when I was in Vietnam last year I saw at least a dozen folks in Hanoi alone wearing Oregon stuff.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Get a Little Go Ducks!
I see Ducks fans sportin’ Duck Gear all over the place too, all over the world!! I do my best to try to give ’em a little Go Ducks!!
I think it kinda startles people sometimes… but real Duck Fans will always give a little Go Ducks! right back!!
This is foolishness
Every fanbase has people who act like idiots at games. It’s unavoidable: people + sports + alcohol + mob mentality = idiocy. It happens everywhere except for the places where no one shows up (see the teams at the bottom of his list, which I think he got right).
Oregon and USC should be the top two.
I feel the need, the need...for speed!
yeah without Phil Knight
I would never be able to yell myself horse every home game. I would never be able to help make Autzen the craziest place this side of like 2 or 3 stadiums. And couldn’t passion be mixed up with arrogance by someone who is a bit jealous. And so what we have Uncle Phil, what USC fans can’t cheer for their team cause they owe it all to Pete Caroll? Stupid
Sleeping under an avalanche with Cartman, wake me Sept 3.
Cal #1?
Really? Then how can you explain their inability to raise $ for a needed new stadium?
Oh and Washington #2, yeah that might might sense, were it done FIFTEEN YEARS AGO!
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
anyone see the Seattle/Denver game?
Nick Reed continues to defy gravity. I swear, I think he’s jacked up on angel dust or something. I don’t really think a player can get more popular with the Seattle fans than he is now. I do think Kent is on the cusp of being cut though.
Nick "the Gas Man" Reed
Yeah, don’t call him undersized… .Nick is ripping it up and it’s really something all Duck fans should appreciate. He’s been all over the place for the SeaChicken’s this preseason!
He knocked that QB so hard that I thought his helmet was going to fly off… of course the ball came out too. Actually, I think REed even blocked a kick, though I’m not sure. I was fast forwarding through much of the game.l
Full Service Reed
Yeah, he’s got an interception, a field goal block, and 1.5 sacks or something like that!
Undersized
Did you see the look on his face when Warren Moon asked him about his size? It’s got to be frustrating when you just produce and produce and people are still saying, “ya, but you are too small”.
"Now, with that said, the stadium is going to be much, much louder this year because the windows are into the boxes and in my judgment based on what I heard last fall and what I see, I don't think there's going to be a louder stadium in the country.

Totally. I’m sorta sick of Moon constantly referring to Forsett’s size…. he does it constantly.
That being said, Moon LOOOOVVVEEESSS Reed. Guy can’t shut up about him.
Meh, I hate Warren Moon.
It’s cool that he loves Reed but I’m dead tired of seeing and hearing Warren Moon everywhere on FSN.
Addicted To Quack [dot] com; Six-hundred and ninety-four yards of total offense.
i dont watch
fox sports but moon was one of my favorites back in the day. i love when they show his cfl and nfl stats. he was the man. i dont think i’ve ever seen him as an analyst, too bad it sounds like he isn’t very good.

Nicholas Douchel
He sounds like he’s just making this crap up as he goes… In my opinion, Oregon fans should take the number 1 spot, bar none… Cal is just so Busch League what with their little button up sweaters and piece of S stadium….
Huskies…? C’mon! Those dogs have rolled over and died…
I’ve always known Duck Fans are number 1. Go Ducks!!
Here is my ranking
1. Oregon-Duh, do you really need to know why? Go spend a Saturday at Autzen and you won’t wonder any more.
(BIG BREAK)
2. USC-Despite the fact that their band makes more noise than the rest of their fans, they are pretty good.
3. Cal-For now anyways.
4. OsEwe-Reasonably loud, even if they don’t always sell out.
5. Washington-Maybe it is just the stadium but that place is f-ing loud and the fans are pretty passionate, if moronic (the barking during kickoffs is really funny).
6. WSU-Always hard to play in Pullman, too bad the team sucks.
7. UCLA-The Rose Bowl is a decent place to play.
8. Arizona-Well, the students come because its the only way to get basketball tickets.
9. Stanford-The Trees do not have good fans.
10. ASU-Only about 10% of their fans seem to come to cheer, the rest seem to come to hang out, drink beer and hook up.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Heh heh heh
We’re #1! I gotta admit, that was quite surprising. From my personal experience I might not put Cal in first place, but definitely top-3 with UW and Oregon as the other two. The reason? Well, every stinking Husky or Duck I meet tends to be pretty chest-thumping proud of it … and not in a bad way.
That argument about Duck fans being the most annoying, well that is just silly when you consider that Ucla and Zona are also in the Pac-10 (those two are definitely the most annoying, arrogant, argumentative, petty, infantile, entitled fan base there is). True, some Duck fans can be a bit over-zealous, but then again, the same can be said for just about any school.
But one thing that does definitely work in favor of Cal is the stadium and the location. Yes, Autzen is louder, the Rose Bowl is more “prestigious” and Husky Stadium is right on the water. But there is simply no better location than Memorial. That is simply not a matter of opinion.
Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Arizona fans cheered and jeered when Dixon went down. I’ll never forget that. I was watching that game with one of my best friends…a huge Arizona fan. He was ashamed and couldn’t believe it.
"Now, with that said, the stadium is going to be much, much louder this year because the windows are into the boxes and in my judgment based on what I heard last fall and what I see, I don't think there's going to be a louder stadium in the country.

I still don’t blame Arizona fans for acting/reacting the way they did in that game.
If I were an Arizona I would have initially cheered, because he slipped or something – right? That’s as good as a sack in my eyes.
At the end of the game – We just beat the #2 team in the nation. That’s pretty amazing.
Now, I’ve heard the stuff about DIxon being taunted as he was leaving the stadium and stuff, and that stuff is junk, if true, but I don’t think it’s definitive of the fan base as a whole.
"It’s spelled S-H-U-F-E-L-T-M-E-U-P"
I don’t know, maybe it’s just me…if the Chargers are playing the Panthers in the Super Bowl and Jake Delhomme gets hurt, I’m going to be relieved that my team is probably going to win, but I’m also going to feel bad for the guy. I’m not going to be all “HA-HA Delhomme you suck anyway! WOOOOOOOOO”.
I’ll stay stay quiet until the guy has been carted off the field and then stand and clap as the guy leaves. Just like I did at Autzen last during the UCLA game when that guy got carted off. Sure, a couple idiots got in a fight in the stands, but I was there and I can tell you it was super quiet that whole time, and then the crowd stood and clapped. We weren’t celebrating and losing our minds because one of their good players went down. The initial reaction isn’t what I’m talking about, it was the prolonged party atmosphere and overall glee and apparent disregard for the guy’s career ending.
Maybe I’m by myself on that one though. I’ve been wrong before.

MCD,
Perfect description of how that went down – I was there too. But for the two douche bags who got into a fight during the down time, the Oregon crowd was very respectful. I wouldn’t expect anything less from Ducks fans. I was much younger when the kid from Colorado got hurt badly and collapsed on the Buff’s sideline, but Duck fans were sensitive then as well (I think it was the game in ’84).
When a guy like Daschel cannot see past the handful of loudmouth assholes lavishing in their internet anonymity, well, that says plenty about his credibility. Just the same, I have no gripe about being no. 3. To steal from Chip Kelly, there is no Hall of Fan Bases. Who gives a hoot.
Last time I checked, there is no "Hall of Average." - Oregon Football Coach Chip Kelly
Memorial? = no better location? Guys stabbing the 'turf' with pitchforks to let the water out?? Come on@#!!
that doesn't really have anything to do with location
I have to agree that it is in a great location. Tucked up into the hill and on campus, it is a great little spot.

Yeah, especially evening games? That place is beautiful.

Oregon Fans
We should be ranked number 1 for obvious reasons, but Daschel has a good point about “sense of entitlement” and “not getting it” among an obnoxious minority.
Because Phil Knight has spent so much of his money, some folks think they are entitled to have consistent national championship contenders in football and basketball. They are clueless when it comes to recognizing the sizeable obstacles Oregon still faces (location, lack of population base, poor funding for higher education, …). The Ducks may gradually be able to overcome these obstacles, but the clueless don’t even realize how real the obstacles are. The only obstacles their superficial analysis can come up with is – coaching. It must be the coaches fault. “Fire Aliotti and we can have an NC team!” “FIre Kent!” Hell, there were even idiots saying we should fire Bellotti. This is the superficial and obnoxious minority that “doesn’t get it” and feels “entitled”.
True Duck Fan
This is true, but has Daschel spent more than 3 seconds over on Bruins nation, where they wanted their team to fail so their coach would get fired?

Big scrimmage tonight, so excited to not see or read about it
We have had a bit of linkage to the whole issue of CK’s keep it secret keep it safe philosophy, but I don’t think we have talked about it? How does everyone feel about the closed door policy?
I love that we are going through two days of game routine, with the walk through and the night schedule yesterday and the game day routine today. And of coarse I want to get as much info as I can about the scrimmage, I am sure Chip want to work on some gadget plays and so I don’t mind them locking the gates.
Sleeping under an avalanche with Cartman, wake me Sept 3.
I’m not at all bothered by him closing practices. For several weeks I’ve been able to go to Pape and stand feet from the team as they practiced. Morning sessions, afternoon sessions, whatever. Now it’s time for complete focus, and yes, maybe a little secrecy. Chip is adding some new wrinkles on the offense with the T-Z-R position. Allioti says he is doing some different stuff on D as well. I don’t figure I’m entitled to see that stuff until game day.
Last time I checked, there is no "Hall of Average." - Oregon Football Coach Chip Kelly
Yep, I agree. While I have not been able to attend any of the earlier practices, I have no problem with a portion of camp/practices being closed.
Yeah, I'd like to see more, be one of the privileged 'insiders.' AND,
I think we all would. I also think that as Duck fans, our job is to understand that CK is doing what he knows is necessary to form the impression in all these guys’ minds that THIS IS BIDNESS. We, as fans, will reap our reward during and after, long after, the game. Remember, ‘In Chip We Trust’ ‘Win The Day’
Go Ducks!
personally
i think it is great that he is closing this practice. i think the only people that dont like it are guys that work for newspapers and need something to write these days.

Nick Daschel is some Joe Blow blogger.
His opinion doesn’t and has never mattered. He’s never been more credible than, say, Rickert. The guy just layers ridiculous upon ridiculous. Look, I’m fine with Cal being near the top. I like Cal fans. But Husky fans should be like fifth. They are not better fans than us. A husky’s sentence structure goes thusly:
Subject – verb – Sarkisian – Willingham excuse – bow down to Washington.

See ya in a couple weeks at Witt’s (seems like the opener is the only one the lady and I do anymore…although I’m going to my first game at Autzen vs Cal :-D )
Go Ducks. Go Vols.
