Oregon 38, Purdue 36: Well, we won
I'll take it. It wasn't pretty. We made mistakes, and depended on 17 points from our defense, but our Ducks pulled out the victory, against what could end up being a very underrated Purdue team.
I don't really have a whole lot of words for the game we just saw. It really wasn't pretty. Our team made a lot of mistakes. But at the end of the day, after an amazing run by Kenjon Barner, the Ducks pulled out the victory.
And you know, for everything that went wrong, I can say that over every single half we've seen this year, our team has improved. So, for tonight, let's celebrate that improvement, the fact that we have a coach that's not a zombie, and that we a real QB again. GO DUCKS!!!

Third time I've said it tonight....
…but I feel the same way I did coming out of Seattle last weekend: I would have liked it to be prettier, but at this point, a win is a win. And more specifically, I can haz QB pressure plz?

Again...
Purdue ran 86 plays. We ran 62. Even though part of this was due to our defensive touchdowns, this cannot continue…

you like 1 out of 3 on third down conversions?
By comparison, the Huskies are 22 of 33 on third downs this year.
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
Waking up this morning and looking at the box scores, I realized that while 6/18 3rd down conversions is nice, 3/3 fourth down conversions is not.

Its a start
And if we can show the offense next week we showed in the late third and early fourth, we will be a very good team.
I always love the commentators going nuts over time of possession though. Oregon was dead last in the category last year and went 10-3.

It’s all about the improvement. We were much better in the 3rd-4th than we were earlier in the game, especially on offense. We’ll just need to carry that over, which I think we can do. As I said in the main article, we’ve seen improvement in every half so far this year. We’re getting better, and I think that will continue.

And we showed character
In a very tough game. THat says a lot.

Yeah, ball control stats like ToP and plays run are kinda useless. You have to use other stats to tell you what they mean, at which point…why not use the other stats?

yes - obviously the Ducks bucked the trend last year by scoring so much so fast ...
… but, in general, there is a strong correlation between those ball control stats and victories. You can’t blame commentators for going there, but they should note UO’s success last year despite performing poorly on those metrics.
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
Agree. In some ways, Oregon’s offense was a “game changer” on the time of possession argument last year but I think it’s too early to tell on whether or not this analysis makes sense. Give it another year or two and then I will start blaming commentators for not looking deeply at what those numbers actually mean given context

Yeah. I’m not so much saying that those stats are irrelevant to who wins. More that when you tell me Team A had a ToP lead on Team B, I still need to know why.
Did Team A run the ball more and eat up ToP between plays? Did Team A run a hurry-up? Did Team A run more plays? Did they run more plays because of turnovers creating defensive scores/short fields? Did Team A have a bunch of 60 and 70 yard drives with no plays bigger than 5 yards? Did they force Team B off of the field in a 3 and out several times, or maybe after one first down? Or did Team B eat up yardage in huge chunks, and score on 3 and 4 play drives?
Basically, I find that ToP doesn’t explain the game to me. ToP needs to be explained.

Utah not looking like the prolific offense we've come to know...
in the end, Purdue might just end up being a pretty decent team. They were a very competitive football team.
Losing their QB
Hurt them a lot.
You never know but I’m feeling good about next week.

Couple of Random Thoughts
- Why did Crenshaw play so much in the first half…..it’s like having blount in the backfield but without the benefits. It should be Barner, James, and Alston.
-Holland HAS to make those catches if Oregon is going to win games against quality pac-10 teams.
- Is anybody else really frustrated that Dickson is almost a non-factor in Oregon’s offense because Masoli Rarely checks off the first receiver and has a really cannot throw a pass in the pocket.
-A lot of Youngins got some serious playing time…..Clay? I wish all our kick holders could tackle that way.
- I don’t know if it’s because we are holding back on the playbook but our offense still looks extremely vanilla.
-Our defensive line was pushed around all day hopefully it was just a matchup issue because Cal is just a little better than purdue
- Hopefully the team will get in a rhythm for the Utah game because we need to be hitting on all cylinders for Cal
I don’t know if this came through much on TV, but there was a pretty heavy dose of rain right before Holland’s drop. It won’t show up on the stat sheet or give fans much of a good feeling, but it clearly effected play

This could be exactly the result that this team needed.
I wasn’t able to watch the game (thanks to everyone in the game thread for their input on finding internet feeds for future games) but following the progress on my cell and reviewing the box scores and the comments here, I think this is the right game for taking the first step in the right direction for this season.
The offense and defense bailed one another out. When the offense was sputtering, the D came up with turnovers or stops, when the Purdue offense started marching, the Ducks’ offense came up with their own drive. The team played as a team, and never let the score get away from them. That was grit.
The team improved through the quarters, and the offense started to find a comfort zone. Last week they looked scared, this week steps were made to overcome that. Hopefully that rhythm continues into next week.
Finally, the fact that it was a close win I think will send a message that this team still has work to do to improve. A gritty win will hopefully bring the team together. No one’s hanging their hat on a blow out. I’m looking forward to see the growth of this team next week.
(and for the record, I like the look of the all green uniforms)

Should we expect the pleasure of seeing him interviewed on the sideline during every game this year? Seriously, the man needs to get over the fact that he is retired and let Chip Kelly be the man.
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
It's not his choice really.
They interview him all the time and will for at least this year. It’s not like he’s going “Don’t you want my take on the game so far?? Don’t you?!!?” He was also looking pretty slick walking around the sideline at the game. Fans were all saying hi.

Good jobulations!
I heard this on the radio on the way home from the BSU game.
From an outside perspective, I really think Oregon is on the right track. Oregon did very well offensively save some really crushing mistakes making short fields for Purdue and drive-killing turnovers. All you have to do is clean it up and you’re there!
At the end of the season, I honestly would not mind the Ducks tell us BSU fans “You played a different team! [insert ’we’d destroy you now’ statements here].”
Good on ya! Destroy Utah (seriously… San Jose State college for women and children gave them a game)!

PS.
You color commentator is “laugh out loud” hilarious. Almost every play was “going to go to the house if not for a shoe-string tackle.” I guess over the years he comes to expect that from the ducks. But it was still funny to listen to.

Except the game was on Fox,
and they had a man crush on Elliot. That Purdue offense is really good though. The problem with looking at the scoreline is that our defense had a pick six and a fumble recovery for a touchdown and a pick in the redzone that let to a field goal. All in all they spotted our offense 17 points. Our offense scored 3 td’s, so it’s back to the drawing board.
i didn't get to watch the 1st quarter,
because of the mariners game over lapping.
but it was an up and down, one minute im pissed the next minute im impressed.
I’m thinking it will be like this all season.

Moments of brillance but....
Good to see mental bounceback from last week. Wondering what happened with mid game lapse of punt, punt, punt, fumble, punt, punt. Luckily Purdue lapsed at the same time.
Boilermaker props to you - and us
Hey Oregon fans,
Great game. Really, great game. I’m sad to see this series end. Last year’s double overtime game and this year’s nail-biter were a lot of fun to watch. Without going into the details (which you’ve dissected just as we have at BoiledSports) I thought both programs showed a lot of promise. Best of luck to you in the upcoming season.
BTW – I don’t think your uniforms are bad, and don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise. I kind of like the helmets.
Masoli
Masoli looked alot better. He threw the ball better and ran the read option 10x better this game. I agree with how ever wrote Dickson isnt being used enough. The guy is a beast and has great hands why cant they get him the ball 5 or 6 times a game?
