There is however one noticeable difference from the last two years under Chip Kelly, the absence of the slot receiver. Jeff Maehl, Cameron Colivn, Brian Paysinger and Aaron Pflugrad. You know all those names don’t you? The slot receiver has been the bread and butter of the Ducks passing game.
Ed Dickson is our slot receiver when we don’t have a TE-friendly formation, and vice versa. I guess congratulations on throwing out some sort of new and curious wisdom as to why our passing game blows – but I think that isn’t quite it. I’m with you in that I think it’s weird Maehl has moved outside, because he sure looks like a slotback through and through. Also, Jeremiah Masoli never played with Cameron Colvin and Brian Paysinger.

clarification and further thoughts...
To explain Covlin and Paysinger, my point was that regardless of QB every slot receiver we have had has been critical to the success of the passing game in the Kelly era.
You are right that Dickson is in the slot now, but consider the larger ramifications. Dickson had some exposure to the slot, but it is not his position. Transitioning from the outside to the slot as a receiver is tough, moving from tight end is even tougher. With the double tight set a new tight end, Paulson, enters the mix.
New receivers always cause bumps in passing chemistry. Holland is new to the starting rotation, so is Paulson. Ed Dickson and Maehl are familiar faces but both play new positions this year. That leaves no faces in familiar places for Masoli, not a one.
So I guess my overall point would be that we would be better served with Dickson at tight end, Maehl in the slot, and LT or Davis opposite Holland…

Ed Dickson plays what’s called the Y position. The Y is everything from a TE to a Slot-R to a second RB. Ed Dickson is also a very natural receiver with a big body. He’s the perfect build for a TE, but he’s also very good in the slot – and we need to get him on the field as much as possible. It’s just not that easy to come out in a 3-wide package everytime. You’re also making Ed Dickson somewhat less of a receiving threat by putting him as a down-lineman on the end.

How much less of a receiver could he not be?
If he is ‘occupying’ their best cover, OK, but he’s got to get some balls thrown to him. Seems like the confidence of JM and ED might be repaired bi-laterally, in concert one with the other, que no?
