Morning Quack Fix: Still no Thurmond update, Looking at the polls, and more Cal fan reaction
I'm still giddy from the weekend victory, and was fortunate enough to be at Autzen for the first time since Oklahoma 2006. For all the talk the last few weeks about the crowd at Autzen, they made up for it an more, as Autzen was again deafening on every play. The crowd smelled blood early, and they never let up on the Bears. On to the quack, and make sure to check out Dave's reaction to the Cal game, as well as the links after the jump.
- Well, still no update on Thurmond. There have been rumors of a sprain, or an MCL or PCL tear. We'll have more info posted as soon as it's available.
- I don't often take a look at the polls, but when I do, it simply reminds me that there is only one poll that's worth anything. The coaches have once again proven that they are a total joke, ranking Oregon 25th and Cal 19th, along with a number of rankings that are indefensible. But let's give some credit to the AP, who have actually taken into account what's happened on the field. I enjoy Chip Kelly's attitude on the subject, and his refusal to take part in the coaches poll.
- Ted Miller has Oregon #1 in this week's Pac-10 Power Poll, and despite the early struggles, I think this is about the only team that can go at #1. Cal was absolutely killed, USC lost to a now-exposed UW team, and couldn't break 30 against WSU. Oregon State lost at home to Arizona. Stanford and Arizona still have a lot to prove. The Pac-10 is more open than I've seen it in a long time, and Oregon has a one game head start on the rest of the preseason contenders.
- Avinash from Cal Golden Blogs is devoting as much time to analyzing the Bear's defeat as he did to previewing the game, and he says the whole game down to line play. Jahvid Best has never looked very good when he doesn't have decent holes, and the Oregon front 7 simply dominated the Cal O-line, and though Best turned some losses into gains, he just never had any room to work.
- In recruiting news, Oregon had 4-star O-lineman Nick Rowland visiting, and he loved his visit. He was impressed by every aspect of the school. Nick is one of our top O-line targets, so picking him up would be huge.
- Lastly, in TV News, the Oct. 10th game against UCLA has been moved to the 12:30 time slot.
As always, leave your thoughts and links below. GO DUCKS

pollspeak.com great website, one idiot from Hawaii had Oregon unranked and Cal 10th, why do they allow these people to vote, it hurts the poll by having people who obviously have no clue what they are doing vote
honestly, lets not worry about rankings just yet.....
it doesn’t really matter at this stage.

It doesn’t one bit. The only vote that matters is at the end of the year.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
It matters if you like watching the Ducks on TV
I have to think the honchos at ABC take rankings into account when they are deciding which games to show each week. #15 Oregon is likely to get higher ratings than #32 Oregon.
then why is college game day going to FSU at BC?
Best game in Autzen??

The only explanation I can think of for the coaches
Is that they are still punishing us for the Blount thing, which is nonsense.
I don’t know that I’ve EVER seen a poll spread that large in either football or basketball. Nine spots is a huge difference.
I’m not saying we should be top 10 mind you but #16 as the AP has it, sounds about right.

Coaches poll is awful, and even worse, actually has pull in the BCS.
It's spelled "S-H-U-X-U-A-L H-A-R-A-S-S-M-E-N-T"
The one ballot for this last week that was released (Air Force’s Troy Calhoun) had Cal ranked 19th and the Ducks unranked. Let’s all write nasty letters.
I feel the need, the need...for speed!
Look at the Gameday Final
And Lou Holtz’s comments:
There are only three teams in the country that are consistent: Florida, Texas and Alabama. The rest of the teams are very inconsistent. Florida State is the perfect example of that. The Seminoles looked great against BYU and terrible against South Florida. However, those inconsistencies provide for exciting football games because you never know what’s going to happen from week to week.
That’s because NONE OF them have played anyone Lou. If those teams played Oregon’s schedule do you think they’d all be 4-0, probably not.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Those are the best 3 teams in the nation. They would be 4-0 against Oregon’s schedule.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
But not all of them
That’s the point.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I think that all 3 of those teams would be 4-0 against Oregon’s schedule…
They are easily the best 3 teams in college football, and it’s not really close.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
Its all hypothetical anyways
"I used to play sports. Then I realized you can buy trophies. Now I'm good at everything." - Demetri Martin
hypothetically speaking?
if the top three teams played the same Boise st. Oregon played, then yes they would all still not have losses, but hypothetically if they played them, then the season would be completely different, because Oregon would have had a cupcake team, gained some confidence early and hypothetically gotten off to a cleaner start. Hypothetically. No I don’t do hypothetici (my plural of hypotheticals) because they aren’t real
"I used to play sports. Then I realized you can buy trophies. Now I'm good at everything." - Demetri Martin
And after all...
It is Lou Holtz, is his opinion really that meaningful?
Next up, Washington State. Make'um pay!
I hate to take Lou Holtz’s side in anything, since he’s generally wrong, but this may be the proverbial blind squirrel finding the mythical nut. He’s right (although I think he should include Boise St. in that list of consistent teams).
Oregon has NOT been consistent. Yes, they’ve played a tough schedule, but you can’t call their play consistent.
Of course, this assumes that Dr. Lou has actually WATCHED any of Oregon’s games except for the debacle at BSU, which is probably too much credit to give.
I feel the need, the need...for speed!
we have been
consistent. we have improved. It isn’t like we have played great and then bad. we played awful, then real bad, then bad, then great.

I watched that game off and on after Tuel came in. He looked okay, but man did USC look uninspired. Their defense was slow and sluggish. None of them looked like they cared.
I could see Tuel growing into a solid QB, but he certainly didn’t look like anything special. That vaunted USC defense didn’t do much punishing. And the speed of the Ducks will be a completely different look. Also, the Coliseum sounded like an empty church compared to Autzen. I’m not too worried, but in absense of anyone else to jinx, you might as well go with Tuel.
I feel the need, the need...for speed!
Disinterested. That’s how I would describe USC’s effort, especially in the second half. I don’t know what to make of the Trojans. Are they having a crisis of confidence after failing to pound the crap out of tOSU and then losing to UW? We’ll learn a lot this weekend when they go to Cal.

Yep,
Our db’s played so well against Cal while missing our potential All-Americans out there, no point in rushing either of them back from injury.
Next up, Washington State. Make'um pay!
About our DBs playing well...
They did, for the most part. At times they were simply amazing. They also caught a couple breaks.
Lasts night’s game replay showed at least three instances where Cal’s primary receiver got well behind a defender on a deep route. A combination of pocket pressure on Riley, inaccuracy by Riley or a receiver failing to adjust and make a catch kept any of those instances from biting the Ducks.
Let’s not gloss over the need for improvement week to week. I’m not really concerned about the corners playing perfectly, because Oregon has the offense to overcome a couple big plays. Just the same, there’s plenty of work to be done. Cal had several opportunities to change the nature of Saturday’s game and continually missed guys who were wide open.
The DBs played well. With continued game experience, we can probably expect them to play even better when they face the likes of Stanford, USC and such.
Last time I checked, there is no "Hall of Average." - Oregon Football Coach Chip Kelly
I remember them missing a few coverages,
However, I meant to insinuate that because they contained Cal for the most part, Then we should not bring back WT3/Ward for WSU. If we don’t bring them in for WSU, we will not suffer in any way, Boyett Glasper have got it covered, literally.
Next up, Washington State. Make'um pay!
We were single covering their guys all day
That was the risk we took, stack the box to stop Best/pressure Riley and hope to disrupt their passing game. It worked about as well as it could.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
EXACTLY,
That is why we should not bother starting WT3 or Ward and risk rushing them back from injury. We contained Cal 1 on 1, we should be able to handle WSU’s recievers
Formerly, thats a no-go.
Yes, that is "the quarterback of the future" for WSU better known as Jeff Tuel. If only he knows what he now has coming to him...
I agree with JConant
Looked to me like if Riley was a better quarterback, that might have been a different game. I also give a lot of credit to our Dline ad linebackers putting the heat on Riley and making those throws hurried.
by Bill Musgrave on Sep 28, 2009 11:20 AM PDT up reply actions
There were a few instances where they had got a step.
But it’s not a huge concern for me. There aren’t a lot of quarterbacks we’re left to face that can consistently hit the long ball with enough touch that it would not give our DBs time to catch up. Also, for the most part I thought the CBs played tight enough that Cal’s receivers couldn’t make the necessary adjustments.
If WT3 and TJ are ready to go, put them in. But I saw DBs playing with tenacity on Saturday eased any worries.

Especially if Ward gets back. But I’m a bit worried about TJ. We keep hearing that he’s close, and then he’s out for another week. I’d love it if he could get in some light action against WSU if he’s good enough to go.

Just like WT3 last year, remember? He was knicked up all year. It sucks, but I am very happy with how the Boyett/Javes Lewis combo has worked out.

UCLA
Anybody concerned with this game out in the Rose Bowl? This is going to be one of the biggest games for the Ducks this season, with USC coming into Autzen the following week. I hope that the Ducks don’t look ahead at USC before tackling this Bruin team. Weasel may have quite a competitive group this season.
It'll be tough
But Washington is after UCLA, not USC. We go WSU-UCLA-Bye-UW-USC.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
My bad, didn’t look again at the schedule but I see it now. That U-Dub game is not going to be a cake walk either. I have the same concerns about playing them on the road, as I do UCLA (even though it appears that UCLA is more competitive than U-Dub). I wish WTIII will be back soon.
Our UW crowd won't be that hostile
Last time it was about 25-30% Oregon fans, even if its only 20% this time that’s still pretty good.

heck ya, most definitely concerned with ucla and stanford away, as well as every pac-10 game
i like our chances in every game when masoli is solid. so as of sat, i like his chances of remaining solid, but there’s no guarantee in that at all.
i think the pac-10 is seriously up for grabs, maybe:
usc at top (though this is quite questionable based on performance so far…)
eight teams with a shot (before sat i would have included cal in the top group)
wsu
if i’m digging deep for reasons to move people up/down as of sat, i think maybe stanford, ucla, oregon, cal… maybe uw… have shown a little more promise than osu, arizona, and asu, but that is more than debateable. heck, usc has looked like a big question mark so far, i only put them at the top due to talent and past performance.
if cal could take care of usc next week, then we all start salivating… 9 team free for all.

Stanford will be the biggest test...not too concerned about FUCLA
Stanford has a beast of a runner in Gerhart. He chewed up and spit out the Huskies this weekend. He will definitely give our front 7 a test in bringing him down. He doesn’t cut too much he just runs straight at ya and runs ya over. Plus, with this being the week after USC, I expect our guys to be a little beat up.
FUCLA has nothing at QB, so we will be able to load up on the run with 8-9 in the box. They have a decent TE, but with our speed at LB, we should be able to stay with em.
UW should be a good game, I doubt that after their win to USC we will be over looking them, and we will have an extra week to get healthy with the bye in between.

Nick Alliotti is on 95.5 right now, but it’s just about over. They put them up as podcasts so check www.955thegame.com if you want to hear it.
Guy behind me at Autzen says "why do the fans yell 'OOOOOO' when we are on D?" He then proceeds to yell "DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" on every defensive play for the rest of the game. As Carlos Mencia would say, "Dee Dee Deeeee".
