I'm embarassed to be a Duck fan right now
As if getting our asses handed to us on national TV wasn't bad enough, our star running back had to go and punch someone, for all the world to see.
Our team lost. They couldn't move the ball. They couldn't do jack.
So, instead of reacting to that in a reasonable fashion, one of our two best known players acted like a baby, and punched another player with little provocation.
As the headline says, I'm embarrassed. This was a pathetic effort on every level.

This one's not on Chip
In retrospect, we should have played a chump school in the first game with the coaching change and the new players.

Watch what you wish for.
I garauntee that UW doesn’t roll over for LSU. The way your Ducks played tonight they wouldn’t beat a D-2 School.
Way to represent the Pac-10, Oregon. A note to Blount, the fastest way to become famous to to become infamous. Congratulations young man.

how is this not on Chip?
I saw a team unprepared, not coached, and completely not “there” in the first half. That’s coaching.

Nonetheless...
He had 4 weeks to prepare the team and their performance was the worst I have ever seen. Granted we have no offensive line and receivers, but why were we running east/west with our slowest RB and not using our TE? Those are coaching issues. Kelly had the team woefully underprepared and failed to make any decent game adjustments. He needs to start picking it up.

Yeah, but that's on the O-Line
He got pressured the second and third times he punted and had someone in his face almost every time after that. He (reasonably) assumed he had to get em off quick or someone was going to get a hand on it. I don’t blame Rice.
The punting failures (like most of the offensive failures) are on the O-Line.

Yep - I'm embarrased too
I love Duck football. My whole family loves Duck football. Whether the Ducks win or lose it is almost always a fun family experience. We were talking about losing gracefully when LGB went nuts. I am embarrased and humiliated by LGB, losing a football game is one thing, but my 9 year old idolized LGB, and he was shocked and disturbed by the events.
I just got to spend 20 minutes talking to my kids about why LGB would do that, and why it was unacceptable.

I play pool and darts with my 22 year old son and have had idiots in bars take swings at me an he has NEVER seen me fight. I’ve heen in multiple fights with an array of different types of people (gang bangers etc…) but would never ever show my son that fighting is a solution.
So the punk got pushed, whatever, you had 7 total yards. After your smack talk you should have had 150. You are a coward!
BTW, from what I saw, we may want to let Kelly do what he does and that is OC. HE SUCKS as a HC. Yes, it’s one game but he SUCKS. How do you not have your team prepared to play a team that Pimp Slapped you last year. What a Joke,
I will not watch another UofO Game (ever) if # 9 is playing next week.!!!!

Here are my four really big question marks about this game...
Bear in mind, I make no pretense of being a Duck fan; nor do I want to troll you. Just the four big question marks for me that I’d want answered if I bled green…
1. Who the HELL thought it was a good idea to start the season playing Boise State in Boise?
and the three plays I would have really hated:
2. Running a 4th and 1 play out of the shotgun, especially on a night when nothing was clicking.
3. Starting out on the 4 yard line or whatever and winding up tackled 3 yards deep in the end zone running east-west.
4. Chasing points with a 2 point conversion try on the first score of the game.
- was successful, so no blood no foul, I suppose — but it struck me as very………. unconventional. And it could as easily have been a crash…

Here's my answers
1. Bellotti did.
2. That’s what we do unfortunately.
3. That’s the spread for ya.
4. I agree with that. We score another TD+2 and we’re only 2 down.

You must admit,
Boise State had an absolutely masterful gameplan. You guys just couldn’t get any rhythm. Tough that it had to be the first game of the season, I can’t help but wonder how the game would have gone if it had been played at the end of the month or in October. Opening week games, if they aren’t blowouts, are often sloppy games that resemble nothing the way the teams play later in the year.
As for Blount, garbage act. He needs to be kicked off the team, or there will be nothing left about UO football to respect. hope you guys rebound.

I find this similar to the Bertuzzi incident a few years ago. Not nearly as seriously, but certainly as vicious. An incident took place in an earlier game that resulted in the injury of your star player and those bitter, angry emotions carried over to the next. We Canuck fans have no right to “whine” about Moore’s hit on Naslund after Bertuzzi ended Moore’s career with that fateful punch. We can claim that the first hit started it, but that’s rather childish is it not?

I feel a little bad for the kid...
He obviously has issues. He didn’t have to light up the BSU player like glass joe for me to know that. I am not condoning what he did as I would never resort to that act.
LB was walking away with his head down obviously distraught from playing a HORRIBLE game and some dude has the nerve to get up in his face and talk shit and even push on him. If we are going to call out LB lets at least call out the BSU player who had no class after winning the game and started that conflict.
I won’t be surprised to see him go however after the way he lost his cool 3-4 more times after that attacking his teammates, coaches, BSU fans and security. Sadly I think this incident may have cost him his career in football. That is not something I take lightly.

Yeah, that's the issue
It’s telling that the BSU guy got ZERO support from his teammates when he got clocked. It tells me that he was way out of line.
But Blount went nuts. He threw a punch and then he went crazy on everyone else. That’s inexcusable, no matter what provoked it. I originally said two games, but if he’s suspended for the rest of the season, I can’t argue with that. The guy just went crazy.

It is a hard life
For many of these kids, but there are lines we can’t allow them to cross. If Blount has excuses made for his behavior, he becomes what is wrong in sports: Star athlete entitlement to any excess, any behavior, any abomination.
Oregon is an outstanding academic and athletic school with an intellectual tradition that argues against acceptance of that behavior.
This school has raised up their football team over time, any growing pains are to be expected, especially in years like this (new coach, heavy loss on O-line, etc). Utah has gone through some bad ones like this in our attempts to improve the program, look at the years after our first BCS game—not pretty.
Football’s like life, our hopes and expectations are not always met, but we should still do the right thing and let the consequences follow.
Cheers good Duck people.

From a Boise State fan:
First of all good game guys. From everything I’ve heard and read, Oregon fans have been nothing but gracious.
What kind of punishment do you think Blount will get? Is Bellotti hard on the players when they make mistakes? Chris Petersen will suspend a player if they sneeze on him. Just curious to know how strict the Oregon staff is when it comes to punishments.

Just got to the hotel from the stadium.
I agree with this post. I feel bad from the loss – Blount makes me angry.
I wore #9 today. I exited the stadium in shame. He also got in some tiff with the police as they were holding him back.
People were asking me over and over “who was that?” as I was leaving. I said it was Blount, and everyone responded with “Wow. That’s really sad.” I looked down, saw my jersey. I was embarrassed, so I took the jersey off, and the crowd cheered.
This was a rough loss. Our offense was absolutely abysmal. When they started get anything happening, they made a stupid mistake and stalled the drive.
The best part was the defense. While Moore countered their scheme early on, they eventually made some good stuff happen – and made opportunities for the offense.

BSU fan here
(some of you may know me from Lookout Landing. I promise you I’m not a troll.)
1. I still maintain that I would have punched that guy in the face, too. That doesn’t excuse it, but at an emotional moment like that, if someone came and said something cute and slapped me on the shoulder . . . I don’t know if I’d be able to hold back. He should be punished, but I don’t think it was some monstrous act.
2. That said, his behavior as a whole (shoving teammates, going after fans, pushing a cop?!?!) is pretty much inexcusable. Realize you made a mistake and walk off the field. You knocked the guy down with one punch. You win. Take your silver lining and leave the field. He just kept piling it on, and that’s what makes me lose any sympathy I had.
3. I’d be more embarrassed about the offense than Blount’s actions. Boise’s a tough place to play, but the defense isn’t all THAT great. Moseli looked awful tonight. I expected fireworks. First-game jitters, perhaps, but this definitely wasn’t what I expected.
Cheers, and good luck going forward. (Except when you play WSU. But we both know you won’t need luck in that game . . . )

3. I’d be more embarrassed about the offense than Blount’s actions
Are you kidding me? Let me tell you what. If Oregon shapes up and plays well the rest of the year, this offensive performance will be forgotten.
Blounts actions will be discussed for years to come.
I will scoff at any Oregon fan that is more embarrassed by a poor game performance than Blount’s retardedness

I know it was his first game, but the team looked out of control. He was yelled at once or twice by players; the team seemed to play with 0 heart but plenty of cockiness; and obviously, the attitude at the end of the game.
Could this have been spotted before the game? Like I said, I know it was his first game, but I have a hard time believing this would have happened EVER under Bellotti.

I’m a duck fan…and have been a season ticket holder for several years. I’ve never been more embarrassed of this team, or this program as I am right now. Both teams played sloppy, and in my opinion neither deserve the ranking bestowed upon them from preseason. The lack of preparation on the O and D line’s for the Ducks was mindblowingly pathetic. Clearly the Ducks were unprepared, and Boise State whooped them, and you know what, the Ducks didn’t deserve to win. Regarding the pathetic display of sportsmanship at the end, Blount should be kicked off the team, because going after people is inexcusable. As a fan in the stands, I get pretty rowdy myself yelling at players on the visiting team, I have that right, I paid for a seat, and I’m not on scholarship, or being watched by millions. Not that I’m excusing anyone, the fan was at fault, the Boise player, and Blount. But I think punishment needs to be harsh to prevent such things from happening in the future, and also to prevent players from thinking they can get away with such behavior.

That's a huge loss if he's out for a significant time

My thoughts
Masoli was bad but improved throughout the game.
The O-line was bad and did NOT improve. Pundits, media, et al were right to question the turnover on the O-Line. It was a big deal.
The D started out shaky and then tightened up. But there wasn’t much they could do in the second half when BSU got conservative.
LGB is an idiot.

bama fan here...
and this is actually something i was wondering about. how much of this loss was due to the breakdown in execution of the offensive line versus a collapse of the entire offense like it’s being portrayed? (blount’s meltdown, of course, has pretty much eclipsed any objective analysis of the game today)
we’ve got recent experience in what a high-powered team can do to a front four that are in significant disarray and the first half of this game seemed similar in that respect.
by kleph on Sep 4, 2009 7:15 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
it was a full offensive loss
Masoli has an awful game, there were a couple drops (though I thought the tight ends played well on the receiving side of things)

I would agree with Takimoto on this one. Full offensive meltdown. I didn’t particularly like the play calling either. Far too conservative.
Personally, I didn’t think that the team looked fired up. They looked timid. It wasn’t the same team that walked with a swagger coming into the Civil War and Holiday Bowl.

the lack of swagger was the most surprising thing. they looked plenty swagger-y dancing around and taunting BSU fans before the game. where did that go?

That’s what I was thinking last night, too. It’s like they crapped in their pants right after kickoff. Masoli looked extremely uncomfortable, you could tell by the look on his face.
With all the miscues from Boise State, we couldn’t even cash in. It was just pathetic all around. They left that door wide open for us, and we put up EIGHT points.
Hey, maybe we should give Chip the Joe Paterno treatment and let him call the games from up in the box!

One question
And preempting all the flaming – I am in NO WAY defending what LGB did.
Why didn’t ANY BSU guys stand up for their player when he got clocked? Was it intelligence? Was it shock? Or was it that the guy was being an idiot himself (even Petersen was trying to hold him back) and he deserved what he got, even if LGB should have restrained himself?
I think the BSU guy was asking for it. LGB should NOT have given it to him. He should have walked away. But it’s telling that no one stood up for the guy when he got punched.

It’s just that my tow buddies watching with me (neither Oregon fans) remarked at how strange it was that no one stood up for the guy that got punched.
It doesn’t matter. LGB should sit for a long time. Maybe the rest of the season.

I agree
What he did after the punch is what I am upset about. I would be defending him if it was only the punch. He was upset, he lost his cool, he was provoked. After that loss of judgment you have to regain your senses. He did not.

I’m glad I’m with some other classy fans in this forum and not some normal internet rabble-rousers who would defend LGB’s punch as if it were not only excusable but condonable. It is neither.
Kelly will have them prepared for next week, with or with our number one RB.
I look forward to the rest of the season with you guys. Go Ducks.

I think the mainstream media is overreacting.
Didn’t really have anywhere else to post this and I’m not a Ducks fan, but I think all of this is extremely overblown.
This twenty-something year old, in the heat of a crushing loss, popped some loudmouth. He lost his mind for about 4 minutes. He didn’t start swinging his helmet around in attempts to maim someone, he didn’t go into the stands and hit a fan (ok, he might have wanted to) and his tantrum was mostly contained to a sucker punch that dropped a kid.
Does this merit throwing away his entire senior year? I don’t think so. Should he be suspended for the majority of the season? Sure. But just to discard him without letting him come back and show that he can learn and be responsible for his actions is the wrong message. He immediately showed contrition to his act and should be allowed to follow up with 4-6 weeks of good behavior to get back on the team.
When you hold up Blount’s actions to some of the more infamous cheap shots/altercations in the history of sports, it is pretty tame. It’s just the media spotlight has never burned brighter .. especially on opening night.

Quick thought from a Tennessee fan who watched the game last night::
Not defending Blount’s actions…i mean obviously he went berserk….BUT…total dick move by the BSU player to taunt him at that exact moment.
The BSU player should be suspended as well.
by guilded on Sep 4, 2009 7:01 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
True but that does not warrant physical action.
Besides lets not forget that all this mess started last year in Eugene. Blount’s actions were a product of not only last night but last year as well. This has been brewing for awhile and his top blew off.
I guess it goes to show you. You can take the kid out of Florida but you can’t take Florida out of the kid.

He was the guy trash-talking in the press before the game, so I think it's pretty much an axiomatic fact of nature that someone was going to remind him about his 8 carries for Minus-5 yards afterwards...
One think I haven’t heard discussed: What was Blount doing on the BSU sidelines anyway? He clearly went out of his way to get over amongst the blue shirts… Is this part of the NCAA’s new idiotic mandatory handshakes rule? And if so, haven’t we seen enough of that dumb idea already???
I don’t think Improved Sportsmanship is the by-product after 1 night of the policy anyways… It’s just lucky there wasn’t a riot after that punch…

Blount was over there running a pass route.
Masoli had just thrown him the ball and he happened to be on the BSU side of the field. I don’t think there was anything intentional there.

My concerns
I’m worried about TJ’s loss. The guy was all over the field last night, and from what I saw of him, he was going to be the most effective and physical player on our defense. Now, it doesn’t look like we’ll ever see him on the field as a Duck again.
Masoli, too. What happened? Clearly, he’s got a long way to go as a passer. There were a couple of plays where he just paused for a couple of seconds after taking the snap from under center, with absolutely no movement, just standing there before finally shifting his entire body towards his WR. What happened to his footwork or keeping your head on a swivel to survey the entire field. If other head coaches take cue from the Boise State D and are able to crowd the box and take away our running game, we are in for a long season unless Chip makes some serious adjustments. Or unless Masoli polishes his passing skills or decides to start another QB with more advanced passing skills. I hope Masoli turns it around.
Play calling…shotgun formation on short yardage situations just kills me. I know that it’s because of our offense, but come on, you need to have some reasonable short yardage plays at your disposal. It’s not even just short yardage. I was surprised that we didn’t have a huge RB like Blount pounding it up the middle. He’s not JJ, he can take a few licks going straight ahead so why not let him do it? He’s not as effective going laterally in the same manner JJ was. I’d love to hear all you guys’ thoughts on the play calling from last night.
And speaking of Blount, I’m not really concerned about what happens with him. He sealed his own fate, whatever that may be. I’m sure he’ll be suspended indefinitely but when he returns, I’m sure that he’ll produce. His actions were truly disappointing and embarassing. I’ve lost a tremendous amount of respect for him. If you’re going to talk trash about owing a team an ass whoopin’ then take it like a man if you actually end up being the ass whoopee.

Dear Oregon fans
I feel for you guys because you’re generally a classy bunch. I hate your program as you are a recruiting rival of Colorado and beat us in a BCS game.
But what I have to say this morning is: “You’re welcome.”
That is, you’re welcome for Mark Helfrich, your new offense coordinator. Enjoy.

The only playcall I take umbrage with was the one that resulted in a safety.
The odashline was making it very difficult to move the ball, on air or ground. Chip was doing what he could with the playcalls and that’s one thing I cannot “blame” him for.

But I know this is not typical behavior of Duck players and I am sure that Blount will be dealt with. Also, the Duck offense took a couple games to get going last year and it will be better later.
