Blount suspended for season

LeGarrette Blount has been suspended for the remainder of the season, due to his sucker punching of Boise State's Byron Hout. Blount's actions have defniitely cast a stain on our school's reputation.

He had a lot of talent, and threw it all away because he could not handle his emotions. We wish him the best, and hope that he can get his life in order. One note is that all reports are that Blount has been suspended, rather than dismissed, which may indicate that he will stay on scholarship and be able to continue his education, if he puts the effort in.

Sad but necessary

I feel sorry for Blount, I like the kid but this incident, combined with his
past behavior, really left UO with no choice. Kelly has to send a message to
his team that this type of behavior will NEVER be tolerated. I’m sorry it has
to be a star player but maybe it is good that it is. If Blount can be kicked
out for behaving badly, the whole team need make sure they behave well.

Gets to stay with the team

Why? He should not be allowed on the Ducks field or any other. What a cowardly response to words.
Suspending him for the rest of the season is nice but why should he keep his scholarship? Give it to kid that wants to win and loose like a man. Sucker punch, how disgraceful and embarrassing.

if oregon can solve that OL problem they have a chance...

a huge part of the faceplant last night was the front four. blount and masoli performed badly because they had blue jerseys in their faces every time they tried to do something. the penetration into the backfield that resulted in the safety was simply appalling.

bottom line, even with blount, the ducks would face an uphill battle given this level of production from the line. if something can be done to remdy that, then you’ll be stunned how well bount’s replacements do down the line.

I totally agree with it, I would have been very disappointed if the UofO just cut him, and left him. That would have been a very poor way to handle it. I am pleased that he is suspended but is allowed to keep the scholarship, that way if he does pursue his education he will continue, but if not it won’t cost the department, because he’ll just leave.

On Blount

Blount got the right punishment. He can practice with the team stay in football shape and maybe make an NFL roster. Put him on the practice squad and let him emulate big backs we’re going to face.

Also regarding this season we have to look no further back than to the UCLA game in 2007. I thought we were done after that game but instead we nearly beat OSU in the civil war in spite of a bunch of injuries and went on to destroy South Florida.

If all this binds the team closer together this can still be a special year. One game does not a season make.

Remember BYU in the Sun Bowl in 2006? The next season we were on our way to the NC and a Heisman trophy before Dixon went down.

One game does not a career make.

I think it’s probably the most appropriate response. If he hadn’t had the prior trouble, if it had just been the punch and not everything after, if he had missed, a multiple game susspension probably would have been served up. But because of all of that he had to be suspended for the season. But I’m glad that the school is letting him keep his scholarship and have the opportunity to make something of himself.

Two questions from a Utes fan...

1- Just curious (missed the end of the game)… what caused Blount to throw the punch? Was it just anger about his performance/the game, or was their a play or something that sent him over the edge? (On this topic… I think it’s great that Oregon is letting him keep his scholarship and potentially work things out there without just kicking him out of the school.)

2- I don’t know if this is the right place to ask this, since this post might be just about Blount, so sorry if it’s in the wrong spot, but… where does this leave the Ducks backfield? I’ll admit, I haven’t paid much attention to them as of late… I know Stewie played well and ended up on my Panthers, and they had Jeremiah Johnson who left after last season… so who do they have now?

Blount Suspended...Who else should be suspended!

Blount’s suspension was appropriate. The University has taken the HIGH ROAD and all duck fans should be proud of Coach Kelly and Mike Belloti.
Now it is up to Coach Petersons and Boise States to demonstrate the quality of their program. Hout should be suspended for one game for initiating the confrontation.

The fan that slapped Blount’s shoulder and verbally abused Blount should have been detained by security and banned from games for the remainder of the season. (to late for that )

by DUCDOC on Sep 4, 2009 3:11 PM PDT reply actions

Does anyone know if this absolutely locks us in? Like, can the AD/university say late in the season “Blount’s behaviour since the incident has been exemplary, so we’re going to very tentatively reinstate him” or would the NCAA be able to say “No, you said it was a season-long suspension.”

Obviously, it would be bad PR to say “Oh, look, we’re bringing Blount back for Southern Cal/Oregon State/the bowl.” but I could see maybe doing it for Stanford, ASU, or Arizona, provided it wouldn’t come off as us being mercenary.

I cannot imagine that happening. However, Nebraska did something similar when they brought Lawrence Phillips back for the national title game against Florida. In this case, I think the University has been clear. “For the season” includes any bowl games. As a Nebraska fan – my “other” team – I didn’t feel real good about Phillips playing. One key difference is that Phillips was placed on probation (unknown if it was double-secret probation).

Hout will get something. What it comes down to is that he talked sh*t and should sit out a week at least. He didn’t have a meltdown.

by UOfootball on Sep 4, 2009 3:34 PM PDT reply actions

Blount deserves a second chance.

The season-long suspension, while harsh, is appropriate. But I also think the Oregon brass sent a message to future recruits and to other potential JC tranfers: “We’ll punish you if you mess up. But we won’t ruin your life by taking away your scholarship and sending you back to the low-income background you came from.”

In all honesty, I think they did exactly what they should have done.

I’m shocked at Peterson for not suspending Hout. Absolutely a class-less, context-less decision. Even if he’s “innocent,” you still have to send that message, not only to your players, fans and the country, but to the Ducks to show them you don’t think it’s entirely their fault. Just a thoughtless move.

I’m out.

Furious

I don’t want to justify Blount’s actions they were uncalled for, period.

With that said, Hout taunted Blount by physically getting his attention then yelling something at him. He’s an idiot for turning his head after taunting somebody, if you taunt you should be expect a reaction and he got one.

The Broncos fans we’re yelling F bombs at Blount and clearly eurphoric, Blount should have kept walking, but the Broncos fans looked bad. I saw a Oregon fan trying to push the crowd back kudos to that fan.

The WAC and Boise State not suspending Hout is hypocritical of the “new gamesmanship policy.”

Makes it much easier to figure out the sequence of events when Blount tried to climb into the stands. It’s hard to figure out just what was said, and it may even be that the instigator was off-screen when the fateful words were uttered, which is suggested by the direction Blount moved.

New Coach Throws Away Student-Athlete to Save Himself !!!!!!!

What a joke!

Suspending for the season is much too harsh.
I think it merely serves the new head coach, the U of O, and the Pac-10 to throw this guy into the flames and saves themselves under a “we won’t accept bad behavior” posture.

But, think about Blount. He lost his head for a moment (after being provoked physically and verbally). And now his whole season and college career are done? Give me a break. How about suspending him for a couple, few, several games… but give him a carrot to work back toward.

Right now, he may simply feel like dropping out of class and everything. How is the university helping the kid in this case? They’re not!

I’m really mad at this decision.

Gives me all the more reason to hope my Cal Bears destroy the Oregon Ducks (a team I normally like) in a few more weeks. Oregonians, I pray thee, REVOLT against this harsh over-reaction!!! I now hate your new coach and will root for him as much as I root for Al (the devil) Davis.

The Boise punk got what he deserved (charma) for taunting. Blount should have got a few games – say 1/2 a season at most with opportunity to get back if he’s good. Then that’s it. Move on. Instead, I hope your season gets flushed down the drain. Decision is as much an over-reaction as Blount’s was to the taunt.

I’M MAD!!!!

by concordtom on Sep 4, 2009 4:57 PM PDT reply actions

I’m not sure if this is well orchestrated sarcasm or not. Will take it like its not.

Here’s the deal. If he just punched guy, you’re right. A few games and he’s back on the field. The fact is he did that, then got into it with a teammate, then tried to go through a security guard into the opposing team’s stands to beat up a fan, then got in a scuffle with a coach.

He had multiple places where he could have stopped but he chose not to. That’s why he’s gone for the season. If you hate our coach and our team because you feel like what Blount did was not worth him losing a season, I question what your view of college football should be.

Not Sarcasm...

Hey, I’m kinda surprised by my reaction, too. Normally I come down on the harsh side, and despite punks who mess up the game. However, in this case, Blount was walking away. Boise dude came up to him, hit him on the shoulder, and made some verbal taunt. That is like throwing gas on a fire. How many can see the opposition just walking away saying, “You are right – we suck, you rule. See ya.”?

It was ridiculous how Blount acted after that. Reeling his arms like, “let’s rumble”, and then pushing his teammates. But then when he went after the fans…. give me another break – those guys are down their all liquored up just trying to provoke any response. It’s taunting a raging bull, who is probably feeling psychological fits at that point. Where’s the suspension for those idiots? Do we fans get to humiliate people just because we paid $20 for a ticket?

Blount was a fool, and he should be suspended for it. But the whole season is too harsh. He would have been remorseful enough had he lost 4 games. Now, they’ve just sent him into bankruptcy.
Your coach just held a press conference. He said Blount is suspended from play, but is still on the team. “We aren’t going to just throw him into the street.” BS – you just did.

I pointed out to my wife that they didn’t even wait 24 hrs to make this life changing decision. In the past 19 hours, that coach had to travel back to Eugene from Boise, sleep, and consider the case, which he did not witness in person (his words). Gee, great decision, coach!

Yes, fans get to do that. It happens through sports and you have to deal with it. Try going to any sporting event in Philadelphia. They booed Santa Claus and threw snowballs at him.

He would have been remorseful enough had he lost 4 games. Now, they’ve just sent him into bankruptcy.

Disagree. He gets to keep his scholarship and still work out with the team and use the facilities. He can use that entire time to train for the NFL or…god forbid…finish his degree and go out and get a job like the rest of us.

Your coach just held a press conference. He said Blount is suspended from play, but is still on the team. "We aren’t going to just throw him into the street." BS – you just did

See previous comment about Blount keeping his scholarship. Throwing him to the street is kicking him out of school, revoking his scholarship and leaving him with an unfinished degree, no opportunity to even train for a future in the NFL, and send him packing back to Florida in disgrace. If anything, Chip did him a favor by keeping him on scholarship and allowing him to use the facilities. What he does with that opportunity is up to him.

I pointed out to my wife that they didn’t even wait 24 hrs to make this life changing decision. In the past 19 hours, that coach had to travel back to Eugene from Boise, sleep, and consider the case, which he did not witness in person (his words). Gee, great decision, coach!

Why does he have to witness it in person? Judges don’t witness things in person before passing sentence. You have tons of people out there on the Internet right now passing judgment on Blount when all they have is a video tape. He got to ask Scott Frost about his up close and personal view of the situation. How about Garrett Embry, the duck player Blount went after?

Blount was one security guard away from going into the stands and beating up fans. Tell me how that is different than Ron Artest really? The Oregon Coaching Staff and University made the right call. If they didn’t make it, guaranteed that the Pac-10 would have

one thing, though. I think our society has become a bit stupid if we think we have a right to taunt just b/c we paid entrance fee. Well, you can’t police it. So, I guess we do. But it’s just a sad commentary on our society. Perhaps another thing wrong with sport. I’ll just say this – that the factors that pushed Blount over the top should have been taken into consideration. I still don’t think a season long suspension is the right correction.

jtlight;

I just watched the video again. Hout pushed him on the shoulder and yelled at him. Blount immediately spun around & punched him. When you push and taunt someone, you’d better be ready for a reaction, not be turning away.

I’m not saying the punch was justified by any means. Hout initiated contact and taunted Blount, and that’s an obvious mitigating factor. If it had ended there, I would have suspended Blount for 2 games. With what followed though, I would have suspended him for half the season.

Idaho sports writers and editors are calling for a suspension for Hout, and I couldn’t agree more.

While Hout should probably be suspended (I honestly don’t care either way), it was a sucker punch.

I will go to Wikipedia on this…

A sucker punch is a blow which is made without warning or preparation on the part of the recipient and so is usually delivered from close range.

Hout was not looking, and had no idea it was coming. Even though it was his coaches fault he wasn’t paying attention, still a sucker punch. Blount hesitated for half a second before throwing the punch. Whether or not Hout should have been paying attention, or he deserved it, it was still the definition of a sucker punch.

Anyone who has played more than a quarters worth of high school football has been “pushed” much harder than that walking back to a huddle or getting up after a tackle. Physicallity and taunting is a part of football. Blount behaved like a rash kid and threw a punch at an unprotected chin.

Hopefully this will not cloud what still should be a great year for Oregon football teams.

I’m the author of 2 Ducks books, “Tales from the Oregon Ducks Sideline” and “The University of Oregon Football Vault”, and I would really like to see us Duck fans start a campaign to have Blount re-instated for the Civil War game. He would have been suspended for 10 games by then, which is a whole lot. And bringing him back would allow Blount to come out with his class on senior day.

Is that even possible?

What would be the school/pac-10/national implications of reversing a season long suspensions? While I think that is a lengthy suspension, and provides motivation for keeping a clean sheet, does it undermine the punishment, or weaken the schools position on the severity of the incident? I think the decision might only be possible if Oregon is doing well without Blount too. If Oregon was doing bad, its possible that it could be viewed as a tactical move to get a win.

Life lessons

There was a man who had four sons. He wanted his sons to learn not to judge things too quickly. So he sent them each on a quest, in turn, to go and look at a pear tree that was a great distance away. The first son went in the winter, the second in the spring, the third in summer, and the youngest son in the fall. When they had all gone and come back, he called them together to describe what they had seen. The first son said the tree was ugly, bent, and twisted. The second son said it was covered with green buds and full of promise. The third son disagreed; he said it was laden with blossoms that smelled so sweet and looked so beautiful, it was the most graceful thing he had ever seen. The last son disagreed with all of them; he said it was ripe and drooping with fruit, full of life and fulfillment. The man then explained to his sons that they were all right, because they had each seen but only one season in the tree’s life. He told them that you cannot judge a tree, or a person, by only one season, and that the essence of who they are and the pleasure, joy, and love that come from that life can only be measured at the end, when all the seasons are up. If you give up when it’s winter, you will miss the promise of your spring, the beauty of your summer, and the fulfillment of your fall. MORAL: Don’t let the pain of one season destroy the joy of all the rest. Don’t judge life by one difficult season.

C'mon Kelly

First of all, I want to state that this is in no way an unbiased opinion. I, like millions of Americans, watched the poor excuse of a football game Thursday night. I had this date circled on my calendar since late October, and nothing about this game seemed rewarding until Hout got his stupid po-dunk smile smacked off of his face. I’m not trying to compare myself to the highly talented Blount, but everything that I have felt for the pathetic team in blue got relayed to reality when the right cross was delivered. This bad blood had developed a year ago, and I didn’t agree with the bulletin board material that been published in Sports Illustrated. On the other hand, Boise State knew that when the “sucker punch” to Masoli was issued in 2008 that Oregon owed them an “A**Whupin” anyway. So nothing new was learned from any Idahoan upon the SI issue. All Ducks and Broncos were aware of the justice that was due. I can only hope the U of O Offensive Line takes it upon themselves to right the wrong. What a poor excuse of Duck Standards. This isn’t Portland St., but maybe that lies upon recruiting or their lack of knowledge of history and expectance of standards at this institution. I do recognize the abundance of talent that was plucked away from the NFL draft, but at the same time, how many years were they aware of the players leaving at the end of last year?

And Upon this Blog, Hout has yet to be disciplined as far as missing games, which, in my opinion is Atrocious and Saddening. And the more I read of U of O Alumni calling this year long suspension “well deserved” and saying “good riddance” is completely horse sh!t. All I can think is Kelly trying to deflect blame for the worst performance that many alumni can recall in probably a decade if not longer. I can only try to recall every other moment I’ve seen an Athlete snap against better judgement and “Rage Against The Opposition,” put myself in their situation, and try to empathize with that level of hostility as if I was in the same situation. In this case, it actually felt as if I was wearing that green nine upon my chest and back (and not just because I actually was wearing the number nine at the the time). If LeGarrette had just put his head back down after being slapped (I’m tired of reading “slapped” reported as “touched” because the euphemism is horsesh!t) on the shoulder and had continued walking to the locker room, I would personally have been arrested for breaking every chair and table within sight and then punching anybody trying to restrain me inside the Las Colinas Boston’s Gourmet Pizza Restaurant. I waited for three hours for a Duck to retaliate against a single Bronco, and it was only after the time clock read triple zeroes that I finally applauded. Was Blount wrong? Yes. Was Chode Hout Wrong? I don’t think there is a human that witnessed the incident that could possibly say no. Did Blount say his team owed the broncos an "AssWhup!n? Yes. Was he wrong with that statement? Not one bit.

Football is a very visible and violent sport, and this new Youtube sensation was a violent act that everyone viewing at home, in the stadium, or at any venue featuring this nationally televised event could not take his or her eyes away from. In my opinion, the injustice was Hout being only punched once, and the suspension that will last the remainder of Blount’s college career. Blount was not innocent in this act of rage, nor was he a victim or the instigator. Yet he is the only one who has taken blame for the post game scuffle. Blount is a 22 year-old kid that has made multiple bad decisions, like almost every single kid in the history of time. Blount was angry when the final whistle blew, like every other Oregon player and fan that had invested time on said night. Blount was pissed at his performance. Blount was pissed at the play calling. Blount was pissed at his brand new head coach. Blount was attempting to walk to the locker room to put this night behind him when Chode Hout slapped him on the shoulder and taunted him 6 inches in front of his face, and I, as an Oregon Fan from Dallas, Texas, applaud his reaction. So to anybody that ever feels they can get in the face of the Green & Yellow: just know that dropping to your knees is what will follow next. Period. Ducks are mean. Period.

nice take although I disagree with Kelly is intentionally using LeGarrette Blount’s situation to shrink from the horrible game. If you ask him, he would probably tell you that he would prefer to talk about the game and not the extracurricular activities that resulted.

I do understand LGB’s actions. I think most people do. The issue is not that we understand, it’s that we don’t excuse his actions.

If he had only punched Hout, he would have received a few game suspension. Unfortunately, he then hit his own teamates and tried to go Ron Artest on the fans. That, along with his prior suspensions from the team, made this inevitable. He gave the coaches no option.

Furthermore, if the team hadn’t suspended Blount for the season, the conference was going to, which would have been another egg on the teams face. They did the right thing.

agree from Texan Duck #2

i think the decision is spot on. besides the obvious need for all schools to foster at least some idea of respectable human behavior, now uo doesn’t get destroyed by the ncaa and media and the parents of future recruits. guy gets to keep his scholarship and all the benefits of the uo/nike machine with potential nfl workouts, should he choose to get refocused on an education and the hope of a free agent or draft look. fans get to maintain respect for their team. as has been stated all over this board, he didn’t just punch out a guy that talked trash, he looked ready to go to the mat against his own teammate (and took the first step in the form of a push/punch), tried to get at some fans, and wwf’d with security guards all the way to the locker room. looked about a half step from mayhem. he might not even deserve the uo support, but it’s the right call i think. he already has screwed up a few smaller times and was given a chance to get his head on straight and play the whole season with all sorts of hype, now he’s down to the chance just to get his head on straight with a glimmer of nfl hope.

i feel for the guy and might have thrown the same punch at a douchebag that talked shit in my face, but it’s not right. the worst part for me is going after your own teammate – he’s trying to save your ass.

will he go to town on doughnuts or will he go adrian peterson style in the weight room and dennis dixon sytle on the internet with a website that says: hey, i got my shit together and i’m a machine, you need me on your team.

honestly, my guess is doughnuts. i hope i’m wrong.
