Well, That Wasn't What I Expected- Rose Bowl Retrospective and a Look Forward
What a frustrating afternoon. What a freaking disappointment. I did NOT see this coming at all.
First of all, I have to hand it to Terrelle Pryor, Jim Tressel, and the rest of the Ohio State Buckeyes. We got outcoached and outplayed today, plain and simple. Pryor and the Buckeye offense executed Tressel's gameplan to perfection, and the defense was too much for us to handle. Ohio State was the better team on the field today. They played their best football of the year on the right day.
Obviously, I'm disappointed in Oregon's performance. We didn't have an answer for Pryor's arm (which I would have never believed before the game if you told me) nor the Buckeye defense. We didn't match up. Our O-Line was absolutely dominated. You'd have a tough time telling me that there's a better defensive line in the country than Ohio State's. Worthington and Heyward dominated. Masoli had NO time in the pocket and LaMichael James had very little opportunites to make something happen.
It was one of the most frustrating performances that I have witnessed. Ohio State brought their A+ game, and we didn't. Consequently, we got hit in the mouth and dropped.
So, to sum it up-
Ohio State had a better gameplan.
Ohio State's defense dominated Oregon's offense.
Oregon didn't have much of an answer for Ohio State's passing game.
Oregon couldn't make sufficient halftime adjustments to give themselves an edge.
So...What does this mean for next season?
If we came out and dominated or even solidly defeated tOSU, we'd be looking forward to a top 5 national preseason ranking for the 2010 season, with possible National Championship expectations.
Now?
Not so fast my friend.
Don't get me wrong, next year could be a very special season. Of course it could be. All but 4 players from the 2-deep returning from a team that had a Pac-10 Championship campaign this year. That's the makings of something special, but I just don't know if I could see us matching up with another defense like this. The 2nd game of the year in Knoxville will show us a lot, but as of right now, I wouldn't be confident in a game against another stingy defense like this. Kelly is going to have his work cut out for him this offseason...the O-Line needs serious help, and we won't match up against a Tennessee, an Ohio State, an Alabama, or a team like that unless that happens.
Well, congrats to the Buckeyes.
But above all....
Praise Juju and GO DUCKS!

ahhhhhhhh
i think legarrette blount’s fumble and the defense are to blame for the loss. the defense was generally bad the whole game and once he fumbled the entire momentum shifted. and we only had the ball for like 12 minutes the whole game. looking forward to next year

I don’t think it was Blount’s fault. Looked to me like Masoli just put the ball too high.

It was a very poorly placed hand-off attempt.
hit Blount in the shoulderpad

Yes
That one fumble cost you 3-7 points. That would have made all the difference in a 9-point loss.

Had we scored there...
We would have acquired all of the momentum, and put huge pressure on your offense to score. Those missed points mean a lot more than just 3-7 points.
Reasons why Kenjon Barner is awesome: He is a special teams stud. He is an incredibly versatile halfback. The TaZeR formation kicks ass. Kenjon is a rad first name.

OK
If you want to claim moral victory over a series of “if this would have happened”s, then fine.

Uhh...Yeah,
We were talking about a hypothetical scenario anyways. So “would have happened” is appropriate here.

Totally agree. Our offense relies on rhythm and momentum. That totally killed it. Especially against a defense as good as Ohio States, you don’t get many of those opportunities.
On top of that, losing James for two drives while he went in for X-rays was very tough. Him and Barner had been very effective getting to the edge. It really limited our playbook for the next two drives.

Yep,
Our offense really only functioned when both Barner and James were rotating carries, or on the field at the same time.

The sweep to Barner was incredibly effective. I don’t think it ever went for less than 8 yards.

Exactly,
I assume that he was running that out of the “TZR” formation, and his versatility clearly gave Ohio State’s defense some problems.

The first two drives of the second half reminded me greatly of triple option football. We almost entirely ran the ball. It was kinda fun, up until the fumble.

Yeah, I was really excited with the Tazer position
It seemed like, since we lost Blount, we just completely forgot about the TZR until the Civil War, where we used it just a little with Barner and it worked really well.
I’m real excited for next year, I’m sure CK will incorporate that into a lot more games.
37-33, 47-20, 42-3, 65-38...So many scores to choose from!

Coach Kelly seems to only run the TZR when we have a power compliment,
So next year, we should see a lot of it, because Dontae Williams (Maybe Marcus Lattimore too, keep our fingers crossed) will become our late game power back.

Lay off the Juju stuff right now...
Lets not worry about damned Juju until next September. We obviously failed in appeasing Juju anyways.

Yeah, probably a bit. The O-line comments are unfounded. I think the O-line was okay, and will only be better next year. Masoli had a sub-par game, especially on the read option. Pryor was good, and the defense didn’t wrap on several key plays.

Yeah, that seemed to be the main thing – guys were hitting him high and trying a bit too much to get a strip, when getting him low would have done the job. Pryor didn’t show any signs of fumbling.

Dominique Easley commits tomorrow...
Here is to hoping he chooses Oregon! We could sure as hell use him!
It is between Oregon and Miami, thankfully Miami also lost their bowl game. Now that football is over, we can all panic about recruiting!

You’d have a tough time telling me that there’s a better defensive line in the country than Ohio State’s
I would say Nebraska’s D-Line is better, but that’s probably the only better D-Line

Did anyone else think that Masoli was reading something that wasn't there?
Or that he was missing the seemingly very obvious reads?
"We'll go."
by DONALDUCK on Jan 1, 2010 6:16 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
He was hurried every time he dropped back.
I don’t blame Masoli for the happy feet. Our O-line was overmatched.
by HoodRiverDuck on Jan 1, 2010 6:41 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Not for the happy feet, but his reads on the zone option were off most of the game. He handed it off at least 3 times when he should have kept the ball. Masoli had a bad game. And as Masoli goes, so goes the rest of the offense.

except this time he hardly threw to the outside receivers at all and didn’t put any pressure on the defender to choose between pass and run.

This was partly play-calling, IMO. It seemed like they wanted Masoli to either throw the quick out and let the receiver make a play (which OSU defended very well), or they wanted him to throw downfield (which OSU defended even better). The few midrange throws that Masoli tried were off, but I would have liked to see more of them.

The thing that we need to realize is that we got virtually every team’s best game this year, and it will be no different next year. We’re going to be a top 8 preseason team and the favorite to win the Pac-10 We’ve got the bullseye on our back. It won’t be easy to replicate the success we had this year, especially playing anOSU, Tennessee, USC, Cal, and ASU (my sleeper team in the Pac-10 next year) on the road next year.
But, how can you not have confidence in Kelly, Aliotti, and Co. to get the players working their asses of in the offseason? I believe there’s a hunger to do great next year, and I think (hope) that the players will put in enough work from now till September 4, 2010 to become a next tier, elite team.
Who’s to say there won’t be a rematch of tOSU and Oregon next year, in Tempe?

Now we won't have to deal with those games not getting our players right
Like in NCAA 09, where Blount was #44 and starter, and JJ had only 90 speed.
There was no Masoli, and Cody Kempt was our starter. LOL
Now, they’ll pay more attention to us since we’ll be ranked high! Yay!

The thing that I didn’t like last night were the shots of the team smiling and screwing around on the sideline while losing…I saw one very distinct shot of Masoli smiling and laughing while down….
You gotta be pissed off and want to win…call me old school, but they were a little TOO laid back yesterday, IMO.

Actually, it's in Glendale, not Tempe any more.
I own a vacation rental house in Sun City, about a 10 minute drive to “University of Phoenix Stadium.” With a heated pool.
I’m blocking the period from 12/31/10 – 1/10/11 out as “Unavailable” in the calendar.
