Awesome!

Completely reinforces everyone’s hatred of USC when they hire a complete douchebag.

Not to be pedantic...

but I think your headline should read: “Kiffin heading to USC”.

I don’t understand why USC did this. What a horrible, knee-jerk move. He’s a dick. Plain and simple. And not a good coach. He’s a good recruiter (so is Orgeron), but not a good coach. I can now hate USC. This is not the type of person you want following Carroll.

Initial Reaction

This is quite the difference from Mike Riley being up for the job. Here’s a guy that is nearly the polar opposite personalty-wise. He came to USC when Pete Carroll was hired and was there during the Reggie Bush years that appear to be still under investigation. To me, if there are sanctions coming, this is a big middle finger to the NCAA especially if the USC coaching staff had anything to do with the Reggie Bush issues.

Outside of his work as an assistant, I’m not sure he has enough of a track record as a head coach to determine whether or not this is a return to the glory years for USC. I’m going to take a wait and see attitude

I know a lot of people are going to bag on Bryce Brown now because of this. To me, he’s one of the victims in all of this along with the Tennessee program. They’ve had 3 coaches in 33 years. Now they are going to have 2 in 2. Those guys that Kiffin recruited have to feel betrayed by this turn of events.

no hate towards BB. just saying you should be attracted to a school for the right reasons. i’ve never understood why recruits are attracted to car salesmen (calipari, etc). if the reasons he used to make that decision are still intact. he seemed like a good kid that got swept up by some bad adults into making some not so good decisions along the way. good luck to him.

Great post.

This just shows you what a jerk Kiffin is. I know USC is a better job than Tennessee, but Kiffin seemed at home in the SEC. Such a weird hire. I think the AD thinks he is striking gold twice here. This is not Caroll 2.0, and I think this will dispell the myth that Pete was only good because of the recruits. Watch…Kiffin and Orgeron are amazing recruiters, but based on their past coaching experiences they don’t know how to handle the talent and turn them into winners. USC is in for some bad years…but they think this is good because they just broght two of the best recruiters to L.A….the problem is Pete and Sark aren’t there to develop the talent (not to mention Norm Chow…it’s not like Kiffin was the best O.C. under Carroll).

by kolson82 on Jan 12, 2010 6:43 PM PST up reply actions

I feel incredibly bad for Bryce Brown. But, he had to have some idea what he was getting himself into. All it takes is a Google search to see what the media thinks of Lane, and when every coach that recruits him is giving him the same general speech, you have to think about how outside sources portray the people you’re dealing with. Bryce Brown is showing very early that he surrounds himself with the wrong kind of person, and this trend has to change if he’s going to succeed at football.

You’re still committing to a football program for at least three years. You may not care whose jersey you’re wearing, but you’re putting your body on the line and trying like hell to win for at least three years. Lane Kiffin leaves, and the players have no control over the next hire, which influences their future. What if Tennessee were to hire Mike Leach? No way Bryce Brown gets to showcase his abilities in the spread. There are penalties for players changing schools, shouldn’t there be a similar standard for coaches?

Kiffin's success will depend on any sanctions that come

Yeah I understand the loathing-fest going on here but there comes a point where it’s just not at al objective. Kiffin is a great recruiter. He-and Chow-also knows offense. That he could get anything out of that Tennessee team last year which was worse on offensive talent than UCLA was His dad knows defense better than any one else in the conference or the country. By itself this is probably the best hire that USC could do.

But now it will depend on when and-sigh-if the NCAA comes down on the program. If not then the team will pick up right where Carroll left. That doesn’t mean another streak of Pac 10 championships and 11 win seasons, but it does mean that they will still be fighting for the top of the conference. But if sanctions happen then they will be lost.

Steve Mariucci?? i’m sure they’re more excited about the assistants that are coming along then him. and since when are SC fans rational? i’m sure half of them are going to have to go get their SC t shirts out of the garbage that they threw away this weekend.

Claimed that the enforcement staff has wanted USC sanctioned for years, but the EC chose to look the other way. Tied into this is are the recent self-imposed penalites USC gave itself for hoops. NCAA accepted those, but USC also offered to self-penalize for football infractions and NCAA refused.

Lane Kiffin is the smartest man alive

he keeps losing, yet keeps getting better jobs.

This is an attempt for SC to return to the glory days, by getting all the guys who were around then. Unfortunately, those times have passed. I’m sure Kiffin, et al, with recruit okay and win their share of games. But Oregon has caught up. Washington will catch up soon. And Neuheisel isn’t going to be the pushover in recruitng that Dorrell was.

The program was eroding even under Pete Carroll. It will still be a good program. But the dynasty is dead. They can put together whatever staff they want, but the Pac-10 no longer fears them.

Am I the only one that is happy about this?

This effects 3 teams we play next year.

First a coach was promoted to offensive coordinator right as some of the biggest NCAA violations started at USC.

Two years later he bolted to the NFL where he systematically burned down the franchise.

He then moved on to a prominent SEC team and within one year has brought nothing but more NCAA recruiting violations, disruptions to the program and then bolts back to USC just as the first NCAA violations are coming to a head.

He brings to USC a trailer full of NCAA violation baggage, a 70 year old defensive coordinator, and a 64 year old offensive coordinator.

He leaves Tennessee in a world of hurt which we have to go visit next year and takes probably one of the only reasons UCLA had at recruiting offensive players.

I predict this is not going to go well for Kiffin and USC. Sure it might be good for recruiting, but we saw what getting the number one running back recruit did for his program last year. But can he really do anything other then leave a wake of recruiting violations, piss off owners and fans, and burn down programs?

Thanks Kiffin and USC you just made me feel a hell of a lot better about next season.

I was thinking how nice it would be to have a real dirtbag down south, so I can’t just hate USC for being good for a while or acting entitled to wins or for cheating, but so I can hate their leader and what he stands for. I want to smile when the guy asks Chip what his deal is, or gives him the old F U salute because Masoli is running in his fifth TD with a 40 point lead.

Now I wonder if the Pac-10 isn’t turning into the SEC. Suddenly we can hate everybody. The Beavers and Fuskies must be loathed. Stoops is insufferable, The Weasel is slime, and Kiffin is more vile than Al Davis naked.

Between his wife dying and everything else going on, I can’t blame the man. The athletic department was became his family. It just got too hard for him to recruit after Price left. He took some gambles and had some colossal misses.

I had the pleasure of going to his “goodbye” press conference when he left. Not a dry eye in the room, and he received a long standing ovation. Even though we’re probably in this because of him, I still won’t blame him for it.

Paris Hilton has paid more dues than Lane Kiffin

So says Forde: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/columns/story?columnist=forde_pat&id=4820927

At this rate, Lane Kiffin is an 8-5 season at USC away from a $50 million contract to coach Peyton Manning and the Colts.

Seriously, why not? Why wouldn’t he just keep rising up the coaching ranks on the basis of nothing much at all? If a 31-year-old with no head-coaching experience can get the Oakland Raiders job, and a guy who got fired from that job after losing 15 of 20 games can get the Tennessee job, and a guy who went 7-6 in a reckless first season in Knoxville can get the USC job … is there any rung of the sport to which Kiffin cannot climb?

I mean, what if he actually does something impressive as a coach? Win a conference title and they might just fast-track him into the Hall of Fame.

Huskie fans are hilarious.
This USC hire was made to complete vs. Washington. Sark has been the talk of the West Coast since arriving at Montlake. He has the No.7 nationally ranked recruiting class coming in. The old man (Carroll) ends his legacy at Troy.

USC goes in the same direction as Washington and brings in the old man’s prodigy. Was this hire a way for USC to close the curtain on Sark? I’m starting to wonder…

Not quite, Rivals has them at No. 21 right now, though a big factor in this class is size, as they have 28 commits.

It’s a good class, and will definitely have a lot of solid depth that the Huskies desperately need, but it’s not an immediate game changer.

Pete is a prankster, right?

What if this is just the biggest, most elaborate episode of Punked we’ve ever seen? I mean, think about it: Carroll’s “terrible” season is better than a lot of respectable programs, he’s stocked with 5-star talent, and he’s the king of one of the most popular cities in America. Yet he decides to just up and go to a corner of the NW where it rains all the time to run a really bad football team who’s best players are spokesmen for Geritol.

Then, his replacement is the most outrageous, shocking, absurd hire you could imagine. A guy who’s entire career is built on leaving his team shortly after he’s hired. His only skill is bringing in 5 star players, which the school would do for a while even if they crowned Mickey Mouse. In fact, I believe they just did.

The more I think about it all the more it’s just too crazy to be real. When “Lane Kiffin” arrives in LA the plane door is going to swing open and out will walk Pete Carroll, Will Ferrell, and the guy from Candid Camera (is that show even on anymore? Damnit, now I feel old). Bill Withers will show up, everyone will sing and have a good time, and we’ll all laugh about being fooled by such an absurd story.

by JonathanPDX on Jan 12, 2010 10:55 PM PST reply actions

His only skill is bringing in 5 star players

I have seen the theory that the department is bracing for sanctions by hiring as good as guy as they can get at recruiting, so that they’ll have a stocked cupboard when the probation runs out.

I love Wikipedia

If you look at just the time (right before the mods edit it) you find some funny shit. I looked up the history of Ed Orgeron and what did I find? This

Orgeron recently returned to the University of Seventh Choice as defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator, allegedly calling recruits during Lame Kiffen’s exit meeting with Tennessee football players. The douchebag actually had the gall to offer players scholarships to U$C for any mid-year enrollees. The expectation is that he and Lame Kiffen will incur further penalties at U$C, leading to the death penalty for the football team.

Le Sigh

The matchup in September looks like it’s going to be a lot more of my Duck wife’s hollering in my Vol ears than the other way around.

Rest assured, Duck fans: Monte’s defense has no chance against the speed Chip’s offense runs. I reference a few of the more painful losses from this year where we Vols had to deal with “speed” and “misdirection”: Florida, Auburn, Ole Miss, Va Tech. Gah.

This, though, is a blessing in disguise. Here’s hoping we get Cutcliffe back for a third go-round!

Go Ducks. GO VOLS!!!

I just wanted to say congratulations on your recent Kiffin-ectomy. I understand that the recovery process could be long and tedious, but I understand that you are 100% Kiffin-free and will be for many years to come. You were particularly lucky to have it removed before it metastasized and started coaching womens’ volleyball or teaching physics classes.

This, though, is a blessing in disguise.

It’s gonna hurt for a couple of years, but you guys are far, far better off without him.
