Police Make Arrest in Attack on Rob Beard
Detectives arrested 20-year old Maurice Dion Peterson, III, of Eugene, for second degree assault. Rob Beard is expected to make a full recovery from his injuries. The case is still active which means the police aren't releasing any other details at this time.

Good start.
Hopefully they round up anyone else involved in that assault. I hope they have the right guy and I hope he gets all he deserves.

Have we heard from Mike Bowlin about the incident? From what I remember it was him in the fight Beard was trying to break up.

And THAT is how you investigate a crime.
1. Start with a crime.
2. Talk to witnesses.
3. Find the perpetrator.
And, ideally,
4. Beat the living crap out of him while he’s “resisting arrest.”
everything is history, eventually.
no no no you have it all wrong
1. Rival school announces it on Twitter
2. Victims call all media outlets to let them know first, then the police
3. Police issue confusing statements, then retract
4. Blogs, twitter and media outlets run wild with stories
That’s how it’s done

huh? is there a difference? Doesn’t the media report and investigate? I’m confused.

Doesn't that seem a little light???
2nd degree assault for putting a guy in the ICU who then had to have minor reconstructive surgery on his face seems a little light to me. Wasn’t he curb-stomped? How is that not something like attempted manslaughter? I understand it probably wouldn’t stick, but shouldn’t you aim high so it will be plead down? Or, I guess the DA can increase it later, right? Either way, I’m glad they caught the guy and hope Bob Beard recovers completely. WTF was he doing at a party without some of his teammates with him….and I don’t mean other kicker, the real football players ;)
For it to be an assault in the 1st degree, he’d have to either:
1. Hit him with a car, while drunk, and on purpose (Or recklessly).
2. Use a weapon
3. Transform Beard into a 6-year-old boy, and then attack him.
Manslaughter is an accidental thing. The only way it really could have been attempted manslaughter is if he was hitting him with a baseball bat or something, but got stopped by someone just short, while in the “Heat of the moment”.
Likely what happened is he intentionally beat the hell out of Beard, but nothing more.
Also, Manslaughter of the second degree and assault in the second degree are both Class B Felonies. Punishment would likely be the same either way.

It doesn't meet the standards of Assualt 1
This is the Oregon Law for Assault 2:
163.175 Assault in the second degree. (1) A person commits the crime of assault in the second degree if the person:
(a) Intentionally or knowingly causes serious physical injury to another;
(b) Intentionally or knowingly causes physical injury to another by means of a deadly or dangerous weapon; or
© Recklessly causes serious physical injury to another by means of a deadly or dangerous weapon under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life.
(2) Assault in the second degree is a Class B felony. [1971 c.743 §93; 1975 c.626 §1; 1977 c.297 §2; 2005 c.22 §110]

I can definitely understand where you’re coming from. I don’t want to write an essay defending myself but I had a pretty legit source inside the frat, who was very convinced and convincing that it was JM and GE. I thought it was reliable enough to go with and matched with enough other facts to add up for me. Apparently, several other media outlets thought so too.
I have talked with all the Jsomethingorothers and with Dave about coming back here and they welcomed me back (while giving me a hard time, of course). I’m really not a bad guy who’s out to hurt the team. I am a huge, very passionate Duck fan and I would like to earn my way back into this community.
I hope you guys can let this go, although I understand if you might not be able to.

If you can explain what's wrong with this sentence
BREAKING NEWS: Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli and little-used wide receiver Garrett Embry were caught stealing from a frat party last night as revenge for Embry being kicked out earlier.
and make an appropriate update, that’d be a good thing.
My take on this, which may not matter a whole lot...
A lot of people got burned by this whole situation and let’s face it. We STILL don’t know all of the facts. We had traditional media contradicting themselves, we had stories being changed, etc. I can’t speak for UOSD on this one but he may have done it a bit differently had he had the opportunity to go back. ESPN reported as “fact” that Norm Chow was leaving UCLA and going to USC when Lane Kiffen was announced. These things can happen and the issue is far from resolved still.
I think the fact that UOSD still wants to come here, be part of the community and has made a point to understand the criticisms and own up to the situation shows a certain character, a character which I value in what ATQ represents as a whole to me.
Like I said, we still don’t know all the facts in this but it won’t be the first time in the course of human history that a reporter/blogger got burned by a source. Don’t get me wrong, you’re going to get some good natured crap and you might have to buy us all a round of beers on Saturday for the ATQ Meetup for USC but we are all duck fans and we’re all human. I prefer to error on the side of the human side

Just some free advice
If you’ve learned nothing else from this , corroborate your sources or at least say its a rumor. But when it concerns a team’s star QB, be cautious because you can do damage either way, if you’re right or wrong and if you’re wrong you get hit too. Take them from someone who is 9 years older than you.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Advice taken. I did say it was a rumor, but like many have said, not early enough and the rest of the negativity in my speculation outweighed the bold type.
I have definitely learned a lot from this whole situation. Sadly, it had to be the expense of putting people’s reputations on the lines. I realize what I did, without official evidence or firsthand knowledge was irresponsible and uncalled for.
As an aspiring journalist, I realize that my reputation is the biggest thing I own, and trusting unreliable sources is not the smartest thing to do, especially when putting the most famous person in your town’s neck on the line.
I really do apologize for what I did, I will accept the consequences (mostly of people deservedly berating me and losing credibility in me) and move from this experience a better writer and a better person.

I have no J school education outside of J-201 (which means nothing since I didn’t go through Info Hell). My take is leave the post up but write another post acknowledging the error. Doesn’t have to be anything dramatic and it isn’t a “defend yourself” piece, maybe just more of a “I was going with the information I had and I really should have checked it out further. I also shouldn’t have worded the statement as I did without doing more due diligence”
Someone help me out here. I think that deleting the post is the wrong thing to do for sure

It would be more impressive if you would issue the apology:
(a ) on your blog,
(b ) on your FB,
(c ) via Twitter.
Apologizing in an independent forum such as this one — buried amongst the bantering of the semi-serious — is what I would call “necessary, but insufficient.”
Just my .02. But remember, everything you write or say online that’s even potentially identifiable as original will come back to haunt you in the future, if it can.
everything is history, eventually.
Completely agree
This was just for here. I plan on writing a similar apology tomorrow and posting it on all the outlets you listed, at a more appropriate time to reach a higher audience. I will even submit it to DSN, if they still are posting my links (they didn’t post my recruiting story today so idk).

DSN is another story
They started the fire just as much as you did by originally sourcing and posting tweets saying Masoli and Embry were involved in thefts. Even though the subject was posed as a question, the information contained in it was clear. They name a crime and names by screenshotting and summarizing twitter messages.
If you’re breaking news based off tweets from a college kid, you need to re-evaluate how you how you report.

The difference in USC and this situation
Is screwing up a Norm Chow rumor doesn’t screw up a kids life. Naming two kids in an ongoing investigation is liable to really mess up their lives. They’ve been branded as criminals in the public now, and there’s no going back from that until this investigation is finished. Even then, people may have their doubts. This is why media outlets can’t name people. If this was Joe Schmoe, a regular student, that was named by the media you could really mess them up.
In cases of criminal investigations there needs to be more care exercised when reporting. You’re not talking about a harmless rumor, but something that can lead to jail and ruin a kids life. In a rush to break a story, you could instead screw someone because you wanted to be the first to report.

To be completely honest, you’re probably going to catch a little flack around here for a while (and I would think that you would most likely expect that). But most people are willing to let things go after a while.
Take it for what it’s worth, a bunch of passionate fans who support their school with all their heart and soul and are willing to stand up to anybody who might intentionally or otherwise try and bring them down.
It’s the ultimate fanhood, and you undercut that and so being you might have to face a little grief because of it.
