Former UO Receiver Tyrece Gaines in Jail
Charges include first-degree burglary, fourth-degree assault, strangulation and interfering with making a police report in connection with an incident. After being ruled academically ineligible for this season, this is a major setback on the road back to the team.
Tyrece was a guy I was really excited about when we were recruiting him. This is a rough turn of events. Hopefully he can get his mind right and back on a good track.

I've come to the conclusion
That as painful personally as we all take this type of news, there is only so much a coach, university, and all those involved in helping shape a young athletes life, it all comes down to taking personal responsibility for oneself.

No no no!
It MUST be Chip Kelly’s fault. Or the athletic department. You don’t see ACADEMIC students getting into trouble with the law, only athletes! I read the sports page every day (online) and I’ve never ONCE seen a story about a regular non-athlete student getting in trouble with the law. After so many arrests, convictions, and (at least) half the team sitting in Lane County Jail you have to start pointing fingers. If you point each of them at someone else that gives you ten chances to get it right. You simply don’t see this kind of stuff happen at big-time schools like Florida or Tennessee.
On a serious note, I think it’s sad to see a young man get himself into serious trouble like this and I do hope things work out for him. Right now he’s not a football player and my guess is we won’t see him suiting up for the Ducks again.
He hasn't left himself many outs at this point
I suppose the news that he was still on campus was good in that he was trying to redeem himself academically (or as is my inference). But at 23 he was in 5th year senior territory already. If he doesn’t have his head on straight by that point, I don’t know what else the program could do to help him.
Ah Football, how I've missed you!

The timing of this is horrendous.
Eight weeks ago this could have carried us to Fulmer Cup victory. What the hell was he thinking?
My name is Cliff Harris, and I’m here to lock shit down.
He wasn’t on the team eight weeks ago.
It’s spelled "S-H-U-F-E-L-T-L-I-K-E-F-O-R-G-I-V-I-N-G-D-A-I-S-Y"
and he's still not on the team
this isn’t something to reset the incident counter for. He’s not a member of the football team. He’s not a UO student.

Did Tyrece Gaines try and recreate every off season incident of the Ducks by himself in one night?
Theft – Check
Assault – Check
Strangulation – Check
Only thing he’s missing is driving while intoxicated, underage and making disparaging comments about the coach on his facebook.
Hey Daisy, git me anudder one!

He could’ve done all those things, he just wasn’t caught for them. It’s the Ferris Bueller’s Day Off of dumb shit.

Welcome to the club, Cody Ross. You can stay at my house.
I didn't see a theft mentioned.
Burglary does not necessarily involve a theft, although most people believe that it does. It is actually the unlawful entry into a building (in this case a dwelling which is more serious) with the intent to commit a crime therein. The crime is often, but not always theft. Here it looks to be the assault.
I realize re-reading that, that I came off slightly snotty
I didn’t mean to. I blame lack of sleep due to puppy sitting…

Road back to the team?
We don’t need him. Period. Good riddance.
I can’t remember the one good player we got from Butler CC, but following Bryce Brown, his “handler”, and now this, maybe we ought to stop looking for talent in Kansas.
When coupled with the news that a New Hampshire DB is facing felony sex charges, I’m honestly starting think that Chip Kelly has lost control over the people over whom he no longer has control.
But yeah, seriously, that sucks for the kid. I don’t care about the impending comments from Huskies / Beavers, because he wasn’t even on the team anymore. But Tyrece sounds like he’s not headed down an ideal life path.

Wait a second....
Officers later arrested Gaines after they found him hiding in a closet
Did he really think this was going to work? “They’ll never find me if I’m in the closet” What, was there no room under the bed? Were the curtain drapes too conspicuous?

at least he wasn't naked, didn't get in a three point stance, and didn't bull rush the cops

give him time
I wish him the best.

I find it really sad that in the 22 comments thus far nobody mentions the victim. She’s my daughter, and whether Mr Gaines played for U of O, plays for U of O, or will pay for U of O or any other team in the future is not important. He hurt my daughter physically and emotionally, and we hope justice will prevail in this matter.
I think that it's implied that we have best wishes for your daughter and that we want the justice system to run it's course
it hasn’t been said once on here that we want him back on the team, if only in sarcastic tones because of the team’s tumultuous off-season. Gaines was a talented player out of high school, but he fell out of favor quickly, which is why you see this being met with a sort of “ho-hum” attitude on here.
that being said, we all wish the best for your daughter in a full recovery both physically and emotionally and that she will be able to use resources appropriated to her for the best.
