This isn’t laughable. This is downright pathetic and this isn’t on just the players any more. As a whole, these incidents are on the administration under the Bellotti watch. I appreciate what CK said in his press conference but this whole off-season is down right unacceptable. I don’t want to win titles if it means I don’t like the team and I’m started to get to that point. I don’t want my Ducks to turn into “The U” of the Pac-10, winning titles but having character issues while doing it.

I understand that there is a lot of media scrutiny now on the team and everyone will be under a microscope because of these events but I’m tired of defending the program when we have a very clear series of incidents. There is a problem and it’s much bigger then a couple of guys being stupid.

I'll put it this way

As fans we can do noting about it except shake our heads and walk away. I’m glad I’m not CK and have to make the decisions about what to do about this. But I’m glad CK IS the one making those decisions.

I have faith that he will do what is right for the kids and the program.

I understand this, however, I’m not sure if the university itself has done anything wrong. In fact, I think they’ve done an admirable job handling this piss poor situation. None of the things that I, as a fan, can do that would appropriately fit the punishment.

I very much disagree with this. There is little reason to think that this is an epidemic. Shit happens

You’re right, shit does happen but when 10% of your football team is under a black cloud of legal issues in the span of 3 months, it is no longer an isolated issue. We can all joke about the Fulmer Cup all we want but that’s not the program I want to be a fan of. I’m not interested in even looking at the street sign for the road to becoming “The U”. You may be able to continue to tolerate these acts as just “shit happening” but my limit has been reached and we will agree to disagree.

We live in a society much different than when “The U” was winning titles and causing mayhem. The world is faster, information is quicker and there are much higher expectations. What took them a decade will take us a lot less time if we even sniff that path.

I know you will disagree, but the numbers speak for themselves. The athletic department, by their own statements, evaluates character in offering recruits. At this point, with as many issues as we’ve had in the last few months, I’ve become a lot more critical of those evaluations and the administration’s role in them

You may be able to continue to tolerate these acts

I don’t tolerate these acts, and neither does the coaching staff. But they happened. People screwed up, and they will face the punishments that they should. But as we’ve said here hundreds of times, correlation does not imply causation. This does not mean that there is some sort of systemic problem. It could be the beginning of a problem, but I have full confidence that Coach Kelly will take the steps necessary to nip it in the bud. The fact that incidents have happened will end up being largely unimportant. What will matter is how the coaching staff and athletic department respond to it.

These types of pronouncements on the football team are simply incredibly premature. Maybe there are character issues on the team, but it seems clear that Coach Kelly won’t be putting up with that type of behavior, and if that’s the case, they will not last long on this team.

What took them a decade will take us a lot less time if we even sniff that path.

I’m sorry, but this isn’t even close to true. Florida has had 24 arrests in something like 4 years. And they don’t have even close to the reputation of the 1980s Miami Hurricanes. Any comparison to “The U” is total hyperbole.

A lesson of my life. Life is not about what happens to you, but more about how you respond to it.

The fact that this is happening to this team, department, coach, etc. is not the important part. Their reaction to it will be what matters. If Kelly is not consistent with his discipline, if players do not respond appropriately with their actions, if the athletic department does not do the right things, that will be the more important part to all of this. NOT that kids are screwing up.

if players do not respond appropriately with their actions

Except isn’t this an example of a player responding about as inappropriately as possible with his actions? CK just got done with a half hour of what I’m sure he would feel akin to torture, fielding ridiculous questions about the behavior of his players.

People screw up, but to make the decision to drive after drinking the same night your coach said those things is unbelievable. This hasn’t been nipped in the bud. The flower has bloomed and is already starting to wilt.

This hasn’t been nipped in the bud. The flower has bloomed and is already starting to wilt.

Everyone is gonna screw up, and lots of people make mistakes. As members of the football team, these players face a standard of behavior, and right now, some of those players aren’t meeting it.

I disagree with your final statements, because I think that Chip Kelly has taken appropriate response thus far (we’ll wait and see how he responds to the Alonso thing, but if these reports are true, I don’t see how Kelly keeps him on the team).

Kelly has seemed to make it quite clear that not living up to behavioral standards won’t be tolerated. If players keep being insanely stupid, what can you actually do? All the University can do is dole out appropriate punishment for these actions. Thus far, I feel they’ve done that. And I have full confidence they’ll do that in the future.

If there are incidents (with merit) that the University does not respond to, then I will get concerned. But that has not yet happened.

If you’re talking about preemptive action, then what would you have him do? Throw down some ultimatums? Put the entire team under 24 hour surveillance? What?

As far as preemptive action, I would like to see specifically how the “character” tests were administered to those athletes in question when they were recruited. For instance, Michael Gray recruited 9 players into the Oregon program, only 1 remains. Not to imply all of those are character issues, but there is upfront work that can be done and it is effective in weeding out players that show certain tendencies.

We won’t get it but I would like some transparency on that.

It’s killing me to see good Duck fans getting heated with each other over these issues. No doubt these are individuals making poor decisions. I believe Kelly when he says their is significant time spent on preparing these players for handling life’s curve balls.

At the same time, the black cloud being cast is over the team and athletic department as a whole. That cannot be ignored. I think it’s likely we’ll see more press conferences and more details about further steps that can be taken to reduce opportunities for individuals making bad decisions. I think those efforts will be sincere, and probably applied across the entire athletic department.

But my personal opinion is that the 21 drinking age is stupid. And it’s just as stupid that you can get a DUII without being impaired.

That said, we have no idea what Alonso’s BAC was, and he was flat out stupid to put himself in that position.

It's not that Alonso will be a huge, devastating loss (if we lose him).

He was a backup LB and a special teams player. But this does represent the program badly, and is embarrassing.

Time for a team meeting

Kelly, Bellotti, Skip Belly, and the rest need to get these players in a room and lay down the law. The leaders of this team (if there are any left) need to step up and get their guys in line, there’s no excuse for this kind of crap to be happening over and over again. Either these guys think there are no rules, or nobody is holding them accountable.

I absolutely believe these kids are innocent until proven guilty, but hearing this stuff in the papers means something is going on down there and the guys who should be holding this team together are not doing their job. I’d hate to see some of our great young players leave but at this point I’d rather see them go now than show up on the field in September and look lost because there is no leadership, accountability, or responsibility in this group of players. If these kids don’t respect the green and yellow enough to act like men and represent the school, the state, and the Pac-10 in a positive way then they don’t deserve to be involved with the football program.

by JonathanPDX on Feb 20, 2010 4:57 PM PST reply actions

I agree.

The team leaders need to step up and every player should be forced to take sleeping pills at 8 oclock to make sure no one is awake past 10

Stackin' wins like legos; toastin' Pac-10 like de eggos

by 6meangreen6 on Feb 20, 2010 5:09 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

Team meeting? Really? They aren’t middle schoolers.

If these kids honestly can’t figure out what to do and not to do, they’re not gonna last long on this team. If Chip Kelly was benching players for skipping class (something that 99.9% of college students do), what do you think he’s gonna do for being convicted of a crime?

These players will be held responsible for their actions by the coaching staff. And that’s the very definition of accountability.

Follow the Riley Plan.

Remember Afalava’s DUI and Busstop demolition? That was only two years ago, February 2008. That fall, he was only suspended for one game for getting drunk and, again, DRIVING INTO A MUTHERFUCKING BUS SHELTER. That, the racial officer beating, the gay sheep stealing… no-one on the team was ever severely punished (at least directly) for any of these crimes.

And then it blew over. Riley didn’t take great press for it at the time, but now most of those same press consider him to run a very clean upstanding program, even though things like the Afalava incident ( and non-punishment) are hardly ancient history. It was forgotten, the media got over it. All this needs to heal is a little time, and there’s no need to overreact and kick off half the team.

Though no more arrests would certainly help.

by omb on Feb 20, 2010 6:41 PM PST reply actions

Afalava incident blow over...

I can’t see this one blowing over. If there is such a thing a a good time or a bad time to get a DUI, I don’t think Kiko’s timing to have this fly under the radar is very good.

by WAduck on Feb 20, 2010 7:24 PM PST up reply actions

Well, assuming he’s harshly punished, it will blow over.

If Kelly takes appropriate action when all the facts are known, and assuming our football players, can stop getting arrested, everything will be forgetting fairly quickly…

More details on Alonso

The Oregonian has some more details on Alonso’s DUI.

Oregon linebacker Kiko Alonso was driving erratically, with two passengers in the car, down 7th Ave., in Eugene when he drew the attention of police.

Alonso, 19, was stopped at the 7-Eleven on Broadway and then cited for DUII, failure to maintain a lane, improper turn, driving uninsured and minor in possession.

Just absolutely mind-numbingly stupid. If I were Alonso, I would be way more scared of Chip Kelly than the legal system.

Yeah, when Pleasant was cited for reckless driving, it came out at that Thomas and Holland were in the car with him. But I wouldn’t be surprised either way.

If it were other players in the car, you can be sure they will face repercussions from Coach Kelly.

You think we are Fulmer Cup candidates, check this out from the Seattle Times this morning:

Gary Brown, the 27th Florida football player arrested in the past five years, was booked on two charges of battery into the Alachua County Jail. Or as the hoosegow is better known in Gainesville law-enforcement circles, The Football Dorm.
