Quack Fix: baseball wins again and Fred Jones sounds off on the basketball team
Not a whole lot out of quack out there -- hopefully this is enough to get your morning started.
- We'll start off with some good news this morning, as the baseball team improved to 3-1 after a 12-3 victory over Loyola Marymount yesterday. The Ducks have scored 32 runs in their four games thus far -- not sure how long that will hold up, but I am enjoying the run they're on right now. The official game recap offers a lot more details from yesterday, if you're not into the whole brevity thing. The victory followed the Ducks entering the national rankings at #25.
- Mike Tokito catches up with Freddie Jones to see what he thinks about the ongoing struggles of the men's basketball team. And, interestingly, when asked about Coach Kent's future, Jones stops short of giving him his endorsement: "I would just say I want the best for the university and the best for the program. I'm sure he does too, being an Oregon grad. I'm just looking forward to the program being where it should be."
- The Register-Guard's Jack Moran has the latest on the LaMichael James situation. Word came yesterday that the judge would not change his decision to allow James access to the main university campus, which effectively bars James from attending class. Furthermore, James is looking for a place to live that meets both his legal and NCAA restrictions.
- George Schroeder offers his thoughts on whether Chip Kelly has been consistent in his handling of problems this offseason. Schroeder thinks that, when all is said done, Chip will have been consistent -- but that's not the current perception by those outside the program.
- I believe Jared posted this yesterday, but thought it was worth putting up in the fix: Here's Nick Dashel's take on how Chip has handled things so far.
- Oregon will host an open house at PK Park this Wednesday evening. The first game in the finished park will be against Washington on March 2.

Jones was saying
“Uh, he needs to go ASAP” without being an ass about it.
Beyond that, I don’t know, I think that ranking the Duck baseball team at #25 in the country already is a bit premature.

It will fix itself. It’s (only one) early poll, and Oregon has one of the best wins in the country.
It won’t last.

Schroder's column really rubbed me the wrong way...
It’s not as ridiculous as Canzano’s, but I just really hate this idea of, “an arrest — for any reason, by anyone — ought to mean immediate suspension.” We want back and forth in the comments yesterday about this, but Schroeder provides a bit more of a reason why he thinks immediate suspension should happen.
But it ought to be automatic, because of the damage to the program.
This seems to be the catch all. The “program is damaged.” Give me a break. The program is not damaged. Is Florida damaged? Is Alabama damaged? They’re taking a temporary beating in the press, the people that make money by playing up these angles. But it’s not in any way permanently damaged.
But you know the best way to stop this? Do the right thing. Give out firm punishments when the facts are in.
But symbolism matters.
No it doesn’t. Symbolism in these cases in meaningless. It’s to appease the people that are ignorant of the situation.
As Schroeder describes Kelly’s opinion, “he sees suspension during the offseason as largely symbolic, discipline without teeth.” And that’s totally true. Suspending James right now would not help the team. It would not help the University. It would be a meaningless gesture that would not actually send a message to the players, even if James is found guilty. And if James is innocent, all that it would do is hurt a young man, and alienate the team from the coach.
Everyone deserves a fair shake, not only under the law, but from their employers, coaches, universities, whatever. It doesn’t matter if it’s a football player, other student, or normal worker.
"There’s no delineation between any player on our team," he said. "Scholarship, walk-on. … Write a story at the end of 2010 and see if I’ve been consistent."
I will, and I’m willing to bet Kelly will have been.
But the problem is, perception matters.
This is what is really frustrating. So Schroeder is effectively saying that as possibly innocent man should be in effect punished simply because of perception?
While Schroeder wants to say that he’s not “rushing to judgment,” by advocating for indefinite suspension, you are doing just that. If James is innocent, he deserves a shot to move on with his life as if nothing had happened. Of course, that’s already not gonna happen because of how domestic violence laws are written, and NCAA rules and whatnot. But the University should not pile on.
I am really glad that Chip Kelly is not going to stoop to a level to make meaningless gestures just to appease the uninformed masses. It’s the right thing to do, and I believe will serve him very well in the long run.

Autzen Stadium is where great teams go to die." - J. Brady McCullough, The Michigan Daily.
Well, yeah. I'm glad that you did. And,
I think that maybe Schroeder does the same thing but he has much less common sense (he’s from Oklahoma before here.) He’s gotta file a story and he spent some time ‘chatting’ with the Clown Prince of shitbag and perhaps he just couldn’t help himself. But he does this sort of ‘I know it all’ writing and it really hurts. I’m part of his readership, you are too, and while his writing is generally several cuts above Clownzano, I’m already starting to turn him off. I won’t read his stuff and I won’t comment on it if I do. Perhaps George has a bigger audience than I imagine. But in the Duck fan world, he can look and read what is happening to JC and if he can’t get the message, I think the R-G will send him packin’.
"We'll go."
This makes sense
But again, remember that James may be innocent in the eyes of the judicial system, and still be guilty enough of wrongdoing to deserve punishment from the team.
I was the jury foreman in a trial last year where a nurse was being tried for abusing an elderly person in hospice center. The case took place a year after the incident, but the person had been fired immediately for breaking the rules. It turns out that based on inconsistent testimony, there was definite reasonable doubt about whether a crime was committed, and the man was acquitted. But there was absolutely no doubt in any of our minds that the man had acted inappropriately and deserved to be fired.
I don’t post this to disagree with your overall point. Kelly should absolutely not punish anyone based on “perception.” The University of Oregon’s image will get along just fine, especially when Kelly handles these tough situations competently and justly.
Forgive me if this isn’t the right place for it, but I mainly disagree with everyone using the terms “innocent” and “guilty” as they apply in the court as a proxy for “shouldn’t be punished” or “should be punished.” Does this mean I think James should be punished right now? No. I still don’t know how much more than us Kelly knows, and I don’t blame him for wanting as much of the picture as possible. If what he knows wouldn’t be enough to kick James off the team (i.e. “fire” him), then he has to wait, since it doesn’t make any sense to levy a punishment now only to revise it later when he knows more.
Again, your overall point is right on. Meaningless gestures are stupid. I just wanted to make the point that just as there are shades of gray in what possibly happened, there are also shades of gray in possible discipline, regardless of the conclusion by the court.

I do agree with this. I think that there is a very high possibility that James could be found innocent, and still deserve punishment.
But my assumption at this point is that the best way to tell if James acted inappropriately is his guilt or innocence (this could change later when more info gets out). One of the main reasons I think this regarding this case specifically is how domestic violence laws are on the books. It’s definitely not the case for any crime that is committed.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
Agreed. I think in this case, we’re going to have to wait it out. Even though I’m 99% sure that Kelly has more information than us, it’s also almost certainly incomplete information. And the only way he’ll get enough to make the correct call is during the legal proceedings.
If the angry mob has this many torches and pitchforks now, can you imagine what this would have been like if it had happened during the season? Kelly taking the wait and see approach during the offseason is one thing, but I get the feeling he would be burned at the stake in the media if he took this same approach on an incident like this during the season. In a lot of ways, this reminds me of the holier-than-thou sanctimony the media continues to spew in regards to steroids in baseball.
Defending maligned chants since 2009
During the season would definitely have been much more difficult. But with how the court is limiting James’ actions during the next month, it seems like it would be almost impossible for James to be a full time member of the football team anyway, regardless of the time of year. So really, Kelly may have had a pretty easy out, saying James hadn’t been able to meet his team obligations, was still a member of the team, but wouldn’t be playing until he could fully participate in all team activities, etc. etc.

This off-season officially sucks for FIVE reasons and counting...
How much more suspended could LaMike be?
He can’t go to class, can’t go near campus, can’t live in his apartment, has to wear an ankle bracelet . . . finally was given permission to contact his professors so that he doesn’t lose all chance of credit for his classes. But why not pile on and add suspension to the list!
any chance CK is rubbing off on Urban Meyer?

Matt Hayes jumps on the stupid wagon
Had Kelly not allowed LeGarrette Blount to return from his horrific, public lapse of judgment last September, the Oregon football program wouldn’t be in this situation. It wouldn’t be analyzed and scrutinized and ripped and ridiculed; and yes, maybe it wouldn’t even be dealing with this offseason nightmare of players gone wild.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
players gone wild?
is that a set of DVDs?
Yep. Suspending LGB for eight games really set the tone that you can do whatever you want without consequences.

I hate this way of thinking
Why the hell do people point at the Blount situation and say that it was the beginning of the end. I thought Blount made a stupid, life changing mistake and was punished fairly. It wasn’t Kelly backing down, it was him forcing Blount to get help and fulfill obligations and then giving him a second chance. I still maintain that he would have been a failure as a coach, and as a mentor, if he had not tried to get Blount to learn from the situation.
Ruining the kids life, with him losing what will amount to millions of dollars, over a stupid ass decision that happened in the heat of battle. The argument that he reinstated him to win games is completely ridiculous, seeing as he left him out of the Stanford, USC, and Arizona games. He took a bad situation and made a kid grow up and learn from it. That, to me, is a success as a coach and as a mentor of young men.

I apparently hate myself, and like pain...
because I’m listening to a podcast of Schroeder on the Bald Faced Truth.
And he insinuated that Kelly did not suspend James because he hadn’t before his press conference, and before the Holland and Alonso incidents. Then he said, “you know how coaches are, they never want to look like they are changing their mind.”
DOES HE NOT REMEMBER THE BLOUNT SITUATION!?!?! If there is a coach that doesn’t give a rats ass about the media, and wants to do what he thinks is the right thing, it’s Kelly.

not a good sign to be on this list made by Pat Forde:
Coach who should take the bus to work
Ernie Kent (38). With a five-game losing streak and a 4-10 record in the puffy Pac-10, he’s probably in the process of getting himself canned at Oregon. If you’re last in this league, you’re awful — especially with all the recruiting help offered by William “Worldwide Wes” Wesley.

That's funny
You should also try to have children in January (if you want them to be hockey, football, or basketball players) or in August (if you want them to be baseball players). That way, they’ll be the most developed kids in their age bracket and are more likely to do better.
