USA vs Canada Olympic Hockey Open Thread

The USA is looking for it's first gold medal at the Olympics since the Miracle on Ice year in 1980. Even though Canada lost to the US earlier, they are the odds on favorites to prove that loss was a fluke and capture another gold medal. I know we have some Canadian readers but I would be remiss if I didn't take this opportunity to say Go USA!

I was in vancouver a week ago

When we won. It was awesome to see the town go quiet.

Literally everyone was watching the game, in every store and on every corner.

It was awesome.

We’re playing with house money folks, they have all the pressure, we have none.

I'm a bit torn.

I work for a Canadian expat, a refugee from their healthcare system and a big Oilers fan.

My daughter married a Canuck, and although they now live in Iowa, that wing of the family is still marinated in maple syrup.

It’s hard for me to root against them. Maybe we should just let them win. What the hell, we’re a football country.

It's just not in the culture.

I don’t know enough about hockey to get into it more often than once every couple of years. The Olympics are fine for someone like me, because in general the announcing is good (so I can not feel quite so stupid about it), there’s plenty of action and not many commercials, and all the games mean something.

But as far as being anything more than a very casual fan, I’m no more into hockey as passive entertainment than UFC or horse racing. Or curling.

I never even set foot in an ice rink of any kind until I was in college and went to the Lloyd Center in Portland. There wasn’t a rink in Eugene until the mid-80s. Hard to get into a sport you can’t play.

NHL will never be more than a second-tier sport in this country, at best.

Its 4 on 4

Overtime rules: If a game is tied at the end of regulation, a 4-on-4, sudden-death overtime period will be played (five-minute OT in preliminary round, 10-minute OT in playoff round and 20-minute OT in gold-medal game). If the game is not decided in overtime, it will go to a shootout.

It’s true. Ovie looks a lot flashier, but Crosby is a MUCH more complete player. Every time Ovechkin even comes near the defensive zone, he breaks out in hives. Guy doesn’t play D at all, and Crosby can almost match him score for score.

by benzduck on Feb 28, 2010 3:00 PM PST reply actions

What a fantastic game

The US played really well, they just didn’t have the big guns. The difference between this game and the prelim game was that in the prelim game, the US scored on almost every grade A chance they had. They didn’t bury their shots in this one.

Not the end of the world. The US was the youngest team in the tourney. They’ll be back in four years.

Now bring back my NHL! Go (Anaheim/Oregon) Ducks!

Yeah. It would’ve been great to swipe the gold from our cheesehead neighbors
to the north, since Canada IS hockey. And just making the final game was a great
accomplishment for the USA. But did you catch any of the closing ceremonies?
OMG, with mother russia opera babe floating around on the neon sign from the
mustang ranch? And the IOC prez talking into the testicle-shaped mic? Good thing he
didn’t have to stop and lick his lips during that speech.
