Statement from Chip Kelly on Jeremiah Masoli and LaMichael James

The following statement came down from the University of Oregon via twitter

"I am carefully considering the latest news concerning Jeremiah Masoli and LaMichael James, and will make a decision regarding disciplinary action on Friday, March 12." -- Chip Kelly

Instant Reaction: Chip is being consistent here, taking some time to gather all of the facts. He had to make a statement of some sort given the timing on the news about Masoli being charged and LMJ changing his plea. Given the budget cuts and how much Lane Country officials complain about never having money, they've spent a good 6 weeks on "Frat Gate". Speaking strictly on the human side, things don't look good.

Costa or Thomas, who’s your money on for the starting job? Could Seastrunk be our starter in September? What role will Dontae Williams have in the backfield?

by JonathanPDX on Mar 10, 2010 7:10 PM PST reply actions

I don’t think Seastrunk is the starter. I think if LMJ is suspended, I think we are looking at a backfield of Kenyon Barner and Remene to start with Seastrunk possibly working into the mix. I don’t know how much Thomas progressed last season compared to Costa.

This is assuming that LMJ is suspended for a significant length of time. We need to wait and see what he pleas to.

not at all. The question was “Could Seastrunk be our starter in September”.

I responded “I think if LMJ is suspended, I think we are looking at a backfield of Kenyon Barner and Remene to start with Seastrunk possibly working into the mix.”

I don’t see anything wrong with looking at the depth chart given the condition that LMJ might not be in the back field

That is true. Given that, I think that Williams and Seastrunk will be major players. Alston never really stood out, and Barner seemed to carve out a niche as a “Tazer.” I think that with those factors, Seastrunk and Williams will make a push for playing time very quickly.

Well, whatever happens, I feel confident about Oregon’s offense rolling on despite youth and inexperience at key positions. You can’t take their speed away from our young guys. Newcomers Masoli and Blount (and Scott and Maehl) in 2008, then LMJ and Barner in 2009. They all proved the kind of impact a talented player can have regardless of their underclass status. It can be done.

Agree on Masoli. Not so sure on LMJ. @Prehmmr My guesses: Masoli Gone. LaMichael James 4 game suspensions.

No slam on Axemen intended. He and I are both of the Axe and I have no issues with any of his posts. Others feel differently. And that’s okay too. It’s up to each of us to decided what we do or don’t do with information we hear from people we know. I can tolerate some youthful exuberance.

Just my $0.02

If these charges hold any water Masoli is GONE

1. It works politically. With a Burglary charge the writing is on the wall and the media scrutiny is hammering Kelly right or wrong. Axing Masoli ends all questions of his ability to punish the star players.

2. Oregon’s season is not a wash without Masoli. Remember that last year Oregon played 2 QB’s, this is the FEWEST we have used since the 2007 season (Dixon & Leaf). Costa is a redshirt sophomore, and while he didn’t set the world on fire he looked better in his first start of the season the Masoli did. Thomas is the fastest, and after Masoli, the strongest QB on the roster. His consistency, just like any young QB’s, is still in question but his ability to make plays under pressure is not. Between the two of them we will find a great new QB come fall.

Masoli being set aside for a moment, or perhaps forever, we look at Lamichael James

It sounds like James will plead no contest to harassment, which means probation or perhaps diversion or some sort. I’m sorry, but you do not take away an entire season for that. A DUI can kill, harassment is a attitude thing and can be treated in the same manner Blount’s was. Up until this point James has been a model student athlete and I think if you give him a lengthy punishment you are only punishing him for the collective sins of the team, which would be wrong. Kelly should make, and can get away with, a “human” decision here. If he cans Masoli nobody can say Kelly is afraid to punish his top guys.

Good take although I thought Costa was in the same class as Masoli. Isn’t he a senior this year? I know Thomas is a redshirt Sophmore

Just saw this comment on OregonLive. Normally I wouldn’t pay attention, but anyone listening to 95.5?

95.5 the game is reporting that James will plead guilty to the lowest level harassment charge possible, which also does not qualify as domestic violence. Additionally, any punishment for James will be handled internally and will apparently not result in any suspension at all. Interesting.

Anyone here ever have anything stolen from them in Eugene?

and then filed a police report, only to hear that they don’t have time to look into burglaries? And yet in this case they have been “investigating” for 6 weeks. This might just be the first theft that the EPD has ever solved, not to mention looked into. Why? Because there is someone people know involved? I’m sorry but if the EPD spent half the time cracking down on meth-heads than they have on this ONE theft, maybe they could have prevented dozens of thefts.
I’m not standing up for Masoli if he did do it, but lets be serious here, EPD doesn’t investigate thefts, they only catch people in the act. And the only reason Masoli was even involved (if he didn’t do it) was because he happened to be at a frat house with a couple hundred people and stuff got stolen (as usually happens when a ton of people are in a house).
Hopefully he didn’t do it, but if he did, congrats to the Eugene Police Department, for wasting tax dollars to investigate a computer theft for SIX WEEKS

Rec'd for truth

I seem to remember a couple of Duck football players getting their apartment robbed while they traveled to UCLA. They had a bunch of electronics (Flat screen TV, laptops, XBox, etc.) and some Bowl memorabilia stolen. I can’t find a link, but I remember Moseley reporting something on it. I seriously doubt that crime was ever solved.

The EPD

is a mixed bag, you get your decent, attentive, actually enjoys their job police officer, then on the other hand you get your “i hate my life”/“I’m bad-ass for Eugene”/“why should I believe you” police officer. I’ve had a gun pulled on me by Costco, gave the police the info, was told I was mistaken and later that night the same car that pulled the gun on me shot up another car. I did their work for them and they still failed

It’s only around $150 for a round-tripper to Nashville from here. I’ve been doing it each of the last 5 years (except my wedding year). Buddy of mine flies in from Austin and we drive to his mom’s place in Maryville for the free room. Only a 2-1/2 hour drive. A nice part is listening to Mike Keith and Frank Wychek call the Blue Vols (my pet name for the Titans) game on the road back, Sunday afternoon.

Without a doubt, though, we’ll need to do some cavorting on The Strip. Keep in mind, of course, I will not be wearing much green, but you can still talk to Jackie. :-D
