For God's sake...

We’re not the U. Not even close.

Did you know that playing in the SEC makes your football team inherently better than everyone else's?

You gotta be kidding me...

With all due respect Will, that was a poor effort.

Kneejerk reaction if I ever saw one.

Do you know how many arrests UF players have gotten in the last 4 years? Have you written anything about them being “the new U”? Have you written anything about Penn States legal troubles 2 seasons ago?

Most programs go through periods of awful luck. If this period lasts two decades, then yes, we would be the “new U”.

This off-season officially sucks for SEVEN(!!!!!!!) reasons and counting...

do we get 5 natty titles in less than 2 decades…?

by Duckfan214 on Mar 12, 2010 12:11 AM PST reply actions

READ THE ARTICLE PEOPLE!!

He isn’t saying that we are the U, he is saying that we are recruiting players who aren’t upstanding and respectful citizens as Oregon sports is generally affiliated with. Whether your ignorance leads you to believe so or not, we recruit our skill position players out of the ghettos of California and Texas. The kids we are bringing in are clearly not from respectful communities, but guess what? We are WINNING!!! We are now one of the best programs in the country, not to mention one of the most popular. The writer is simply asking if us fans are ok with sacrificing the character of the guys on our team for the talent and wins they bring us. DUCKS BABY!!!

The outrage comes from the tiresome comparison, when they aren’t even CLOSE to the same.

its not at the same level but in concept it is the same.. trading character and integrity for winning

by Duckfan214 on Mar 12, 2010 1:58 PM PST up reply actions

And that concept is simply absurd. As if all talented players are going to have a tainted history or be a multiple offender.

really? the concept is absurd?? you’re saying the U didn’t trade character for winning?

by Duckfan214 on Mar 12, 2010 2:36 PM PST up reply actions

The absurdity comes from saying there aren’t good players who also have good characters. That it’s all or nothing.

That you can’t have success without having finding bad seeds.

That is simply absurd.

Tiring Comparison?

First of all, how is it a tiring comparison? Ducks players haven’t been getting in trouble for more than 2 months, so how is it tiring? This is all a new aspect of behavior for Oregon sports. Second, Once Again, the writer isn’t comparing the overall QUALITY, PERFORMANCE, or HISTORY of the two programs. He is comparing the behavior of the players. Stop looking so much into the U. If you read the article, you will understand that the championships of the U aren’t even brought in to play. He is asking if us fans are ok with recruiting kids from bad areas who will behave poorly around the community. Oregon could easily be a cupcake program and recruit in state like Oregon State and be subpar.

by Max Seeley on Mar 12, 2010 11:10 AM PST reply actions

WTF does "recruiting kids from bad areas" mean?

And Duck athletes getting in trouble isn’t anything new. Don’t pretend it’s something that just happened in the last 2 months.

by grimc on Mar 12, 2010 11:58 AM PST up reply actions

It means what I wrote.

Just because you don’t know anything about the world outside of your Portland bubble doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist. We recruit thugs, but they win. Get over it.

Recruiting kids from “bad areas” has to bearing on discipline issues.

Mike Bowlin – Mission Viejo, CA (upper-middle class)
Rob Beard – Fullerton, CA (middle class)
Kiko Alonso – Los Gatos, CA (mixed bag, ultimately pretty decent)
Garrett Embry – Roswell, GA (stats are a mixed bag as well, it’s suburban Atlanta)
Jeremiah Masoli – San Francisco, CA, with a brief stop in Hawaii (He came in after being kicked out of Serra HS in California. Not to say this was a red flag issue, but there was history, unlike these other guys)
Jamere Holland – Pacioma, CA (never been there. Street View reminds me a lot of Richmond. Not the greatest place to grow up, I imagine.)
Josh Kaddu – Vacaville, CA (on the low side of middle class, outside of Sacramento. Pretty decent outlet mall though.)

Meanwhile, there are numerous kids from the greater LA area (Terrell Turner, Andre Crenshaw, Javes Lewis, Compton’s own Marvin Johnson) and Oakland’s NaDerris Ward, who have been nothing short of model citizens here in Eugene.

I also wouldn’t call Oregon State a cupcake program. And recruiting in-state? Only 29 of 94 Beavers are from Oregon, compared to 21 Ducks from Oregon. The difference is not that big

The biggest issue is that this is two months. The University of Miami gained a legendary bad boy reputation over a decade. This comparison isn’t prudent until we’ve won a national championship or two, our players are showing up to the Rose Bowl in fatigues, and Chip Kelly is embracing the attitude. Otherwise, put the U away.

They call him Rags. Where he goes, no-hitters follow.

You could add Ed Dickson to that Model citizen list.

He is from Bellflower, CA. Neighbors to East Compton. He had his choice to go to HS there or Bellflower. He made his decison based on the fact that he didn’t want any trouble.

May we hand you your taints on a silver platter...

First of all, the reply button is pretty great. It helps the flow of the conversation.

Second, bad areas? Maybe if you or the author did some actual research you wouldn’t paint with such broad brushes.

Third of all, this is a very tiring comparison. The article headline clearly illustrates the comparison. The article itself isn’t too much either. I read the article when I saw the fanshot this morning. The author of the article brings nothing new to the conversation. You’re telling me to stop looking so much into the “U”, when the the damn headline reads “Duck Fans: Are you ready to be the next U?”. In the article, Miami is mentioned three times. The beginning paragraph is about the comparison of the two programs. I’m not the one that is looking into it, the author of the article is.

The reason why this is a tiring comparison is because the author isn’t the first person to make mention of the U. In fact, I bet I can find at least a dozen articles that have been written over the last month. Maybe it’s a “new issue” to Oregon (Fact: It isn’t), but for it being the national hot topic in college football, it’s been discussed to DEATH.
