Selection Sunday Open Thread

CBS's NCAA Tournament Show will start at 6 PM ET/3 PT. At least I won't be sweating out over seeding for two teams (let's not forget that I'm a Vol basketball fan) this year.

Earlier today, Mississippi State notched an impressive win got screwed by the refs against Kentucky, losing 75-74 in OT in the SEC Championship game, Duke slipped by Georgia Tech 65-61 in the ACC Championship Game, and Temple won a close game against Richmond, 56-52, to win the A-10 Championship. Ohio State (FU Pryor) leads Minnesota 33-30 at the half in the Big Teneleven Champ. Game.

Automatic Qualifying Teams Are:

ACC: Duke

America East: Vermont

Atlantic 10: Temple

Atlantic Sun: East Tenn. State

Big 12: Kansas

Big East: West Virginia, Mountain Momma

Big Sky: Montana (Is Ropert going to be at their opening round game?)

Big South: Winthrop

Big Ten: Ohio State/Minnesota

Big West: UC-Santa Barbara

Colonial: Old Dominion

Conference USA: Houston

Horizon: Butler

Ivy: Cornell (The Nard Dog's alma mater, for the fans of "The Office")

MAAC: Siena

MAC: Ohio

MEAC: Morgan State

Missouri Valley: Northern Iowa

Mountain West: San Diego State

NEC: Robert Morris

Ohio Valley: Murray State

Pac-10: Fuskies

Patriot: Lehigh

SEC: Kentucky

SOCON: Wofford

Southland: Sam Houston St.

Summit: Oakland

Sun Belt: North Texas

SWAC: Arkansas Pine Bluff

West Coast: Saint Mary's

WAC: New Mexico St.

That leaves 34 at-large bids to sweat over. Discuss below.

They’re worse than Pac-10 officials. I hate saying this because it seems so broad and generalized, but in football, it always seems as if Florida (and Bama to an extent) get the calls, and in basketball, Kentucky is always favored by the refs.

Not always, but most of the time.

I have but one question.

Is “Varnado” really pronounced “Va-NARD-o”?

everything is history, eventually.

Yup.

He’s an absolute beast, too.

You old-timers and your unwillingness to accept unique names.

I have no quarrel with unique names. Unique mispronunciations have bothered me since I first learned the “Isiah” in Isiah Thomas was pronounced “Isaiah”.

If you saw a player named “Tennessee”, but you heard it was pronounced “Tessennee”, wouldn’t you find this odd? Oh, wait, you’re from Tennessee. Never you mind.

Back in the day, the Boston Patriots had a quarterback named Mike Taliaferro.

Guess how it was pronounced?

Unfortunately, my only interest in this year’s Selection Sunday is the part it plays in officially marking the end of Oregon’s season.

Top seeds

No. 1 seeds: Duke (South Regional) | Kentucky (East) | Kansas (Midwest) | Syracuse (West)

The Not-Orangemen get rewarded by being sent to the West Regional. Might as well, it’s not as though there are any decent Western teams to put there.

The fact that San Jose

Has as one of their top seeds Vandy suggests that the west is real weak.

I wasn’t surprised we made it in that year (lost to MS State) but as a #9?

My Bracket Summary

Final Four: Kansas, Baylor, K State, West Virginia.
Championship: Kansas over West Virginia
First #1 out: Syracuse to the Zags in Round 2.
Biggest upset: Siena over Purdue.
Number of double digit seeds to the sweet 16: 4

I don’t like having 3 Big 12 teams but the match-ups make it that way.
