Now that Jeremiah Masoli has been suspended for the year, Darron Thomas gives the Ducks the best chance to achieve their goals for 2010.

Well,

If Costa outplays Thomas in spring and summer ball, Coach Kelly wouldn’t hesitate to put Costa first string. Either way, Darron Thomas would end up starting because Costa’s knee would erupt in cataclysmic fashion. Then he would be granted a 12th year of eligibility by the NCAA.

Though, I will say that if Costa wins the job, I couldn't be happier.

Not just because I think Nate Costa’s great, but because if he beats out the favorite in Thomas, he must have excellent tools other than athleticism. Either Nate Costa will win the job for a great reason, or Darron Thomas will win for a great reason. I’m excited to see how our offense will change depending on who wins the job.

I'm not sure about Thomas yet

I want to see him as the next Dixon, but it feels like it could come down to athletic ability vs. deep understanding of the playbook. If Thomas has all the tools but doesn’t understand the playbook and offensive concepts then Costa could very well get the job, heck Nate Costa has been here longer than Chip Kelly.

Having the QB outrun everyone would be nice, but I’d take a reliable passing game, QB runs for 5 yards and first down, and no turnovers.

I dont know about anyone else, but Costa is alot faster than I thought he would be. I know it was only mop up duty, but in one of our blow out games i seen Costa break out of the pocket and he seems to have quite a bit of speed still in those legs. I loved to see Masoli run and bulldoze people, but I would love more to see our QB hit open receivers on a regular basis and stretch the field to open more running lanes for our RB’s

I think Costa is more accurate than Masoli in the short to mid-range passing game, but in the small samples I’ve seen, he didn’t look like he had a great downfield arm, either strength or accuracy-wise. I’m not sure how Thomas is at that aspect.

Overall, I think Costa will probably handle the offense better and be more consistent. I think Thomas ultimately has more raw talent and will be a better playmaker. I think it just comes down to who looks better before the season starts. Nothing like a good ol’ fashioned QB controversy!

I'm sure that Chip Kelly is licking his chops waiting for this competition.

He loves competition.

I think that's an acceptable colloquialism.

Certainly we have a usage, grammar, and spelling Nazi here somewhere. It’s an internet forum, after all.

by HoodRiverDuck on Mar 16, 2010 3:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Thankfully, we have Wiktionary.

1993, The Columbia Guide to Standard American English calls alot "substandard" and notes that it is "increasingly found in Informal correspondence and student writing" and "has as yet received no sanction in print except on the op-ed and sports pages." 1

1996, The American Heritage Book of English Usage states that "alot is still considered an error in print" but notes that standard words have formed by fusion of the article with a noun, such as another and awhile, and suggests the possibility that alot may like them eventually enter standard usage. 2

2004, Jack Lynch Guide to Grammar and Style (entry dated 2004) flatly states this to be a two-word expression. 3

2004, The Cambridge Guide to English Usage also compares alot to awhile. It states alot to be "still regarded as nonstandard" and notes 50 appearances in the British National Corpus, "almost entirely from three sources: e-mail, TV autocue data, and TV newscripts." It suggests that some usages of alot in typewritten use are to be considered merely typos of the standard a lot though its appearance in handwriting and typescript is "more significant, as the shadow of things to come."

Grammar Nazis, like Spelling Nazis and Punctuation Nazis, are boring.

We all knew what the OP meant.

Boise State was playing a soft zone,

But it is safe to say that we are all very excited about his potential ever since watching that game!

If they were playing the soft zone, why was the deep middle open? It’s not like he was throwing underneath over and over again.

Thank you!

It is important to note that Thomas was making these passes OVER coverage. Unless Boise State learned prevent coverage or soft Cover 2/3 from Holt (Ref: ASU vs. UDub, 2009), he wasn’t completing these passes under the deep zones.

Wasn't the idea to keep Oregon from scoring quick points?

Isn’t that why you play a “prevent” defense? Sit back in a zone and miminize the chance that someone wlll get open and the QB can pick you apart?

How’d that work out for them?

Thomas absolutely excelled in a situation that was designed to make him as ineffective as possible.

Not bad for a thrown-to-the-wolves situation.

And, he’s now going to be 2 years more mature (not that being over 21 means you’re actually mature, as we know from recent events).

I’m optimistic.

everything is history, eventually.

Thomas is better than Masoli

Masoli may be a better runner in the fact that he can lay a hit on someone, but Thomas has a better arm than Masoli. Another thing is Thomas looks downfield for a reciever then short if one is not open, Masoli looks short first and then usually stays short. How many times was a guy running free deep and Masoli throws a 5 yrd out. Regardless of what kind of coverage Boise State had against Thomas, they knew the ball was gonna be in the air and they couldn’t stop him. With teams trying to stop one of the best running attacks, Thomas should find open recievers and Oregon will have one of the most complete Offenses is the Country. Go Ducks, Let the Thomas era begin!

I think we need a bit more of a sample size to determine Thomas’ tendencies.

Essentially, what is written above is what we all hope is true, and the recruiting services would have us believe.

So that’s nice, but until we see it all come true on the field it is all merely “possible”.

My parents don't believe in Canzano either.

I’m just glad that Costa’s going to have a decent shot at winning the job, as will Thomas.
And Bennett could be a factor in 2 yrs, or so.
