The final game.  This is the final game of the Pac 10 season for the Men's Basketball team.  This is the final home game.  This is Tajuan Porter's final home game.  This very well may be Ernie Kent's final home game.  And finally, this is McArthur Court's final Pac 10 game.

What can you say about a gym that has given so many memories to so many people.  My daughters' first basketball game ever was witnessed from the third balcony front row.  They watched Aaron Brooks fly up and down the floor and cheered along with the fans who were shaking the rafters so close to our heads.  My first game was witnessing Terrell Brandon control a game like a maestro controls an orchestra, and I was immediately hooked on Oregon basketball.  I'm not even sure what my father's first game was, but it had to be back in the Tall Firs era.  This gymnasium has spanned three generations of my family, and I am sure there have been more for others out there.

Tonight it will play host to Washington State in what is an undeserving game for such a majestic home, last place in the Pac 10.  Mac Court deserves a better send off than deciding who takes last place in this year's Pac 10 race.

Star-divide

Keys to the Game

Limit Casto and Thompson.  Klay Thompson and DeAngelo (Joe G calls me Castro) Casto are guys that will fuel runs for the Cougs.  Thomson shoots almost 36% from 3 and leads the team in scoring at almost 20 ppg.  He had been in somewhat of a funk lately until he dropped 18 on 50% shooting against the rodents in a loss.  Casto has been on a tear lately averaging 14 points in their last 7 games.  Plus his size down low can create lots of problems for Oregon inside and Oregon needs to find a way to get him into foul trouble.

Guard Play.  Oregon's guards carried them the last time these two teams played.  Armstead had 16 points and 7 assists and Tajaun Porter dropped 31 with 6 threes.  WSU guards are talented as well.  We've already discussed Thompson who had 33 against the Ducks last time, but Reggie Moore is a talented freshman and can really cause trouble getting to the basket.  Plus, Ernie Kent should be fired alone for letting Aaron Brooks' cousin (Reggie Moore) go to a rival Pac 10 school.

Feed off the Crowd.  Mac Court should be pretty full tonight for the first time in a while.  We all know what that place can be like when the crowd is rocking.  I hope to see a team that is ready to give this gym a send off like it deserves and a crowd that leaves us with a good memory.

Conclusion

I have a soft spot in my heart for old school gyms and Mac Court holds the first place.  It will be really cool to see the new Matthew Knight Arena and all the high-tech state of the art facilities it offers, but nothing will ever compare to the intimate and historic feel of Mac Court.  Let's hope that Ernie and the boys have the same feeling tonight and give the home court something to be proud off.

Go Ducks!

A lot of people seem to be confused about this, but this isn’t the last game at Mac Court. The mactomatt.net site says that the switch will happen next December, and all of the articles from the university talk about how “This is the last conference game scheduled to be played at the 83-year old facility.”

Tracy Porter's gonna score! TRACY PORTER'S GONNA SCORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (HT Takimoto)

You're right

but this is the last time the Pac 10 will play at Mac Court. They’ll hold some pre-season games there next year, but this is the last Pac 10 game at Mac Court

Well Canzano, maybe your parents didn’t believe in you.

cougfan

you really think the Pac is getting 3 teams into the tourney? what have you been smoking?

No, two

Especially since asu and uw are one the same side of the bracket. UW probably has the better resume than ASU, but Cal goes and the winner of UW and ASU goes I think

by Brian Floyd on Mar 6, 2010 10:42 AM PST via mobile up reply actions

I thnk ASU gets in

Bubble teams stumbling more than usual this year. If this season isn’t proof that expansion of the tourney is a real bad idea I don’t know what is. Can anyone really argue that there are 32 more deserving teams

I don’t think so. UW has a lot of bad losses and ASU doesn’t really have the quality wins to deserve an at large. Plus if either one of them stumbles early in the PAc 10 tourney you’re looking at Cal only. One of them has to make it to the final game to even think about an at large

Well Canzano, maybe your parents didn’t believe in you.

It's literally a toss-up for me, which is why I think the winner of that game takes a bid

ASU is two spots below UW in Pomeroy’s rankings,

ASU’s best wins:
SDSU (home)
UW (home)

UW’s best wins:
A&M (home)
Cal (home)

UW has more bad losses (all on the road except Oregon) and ASU doesn’t really have terrible losses.

It’s almost at the flip a coin point for me as it stands which is why I think the winner of that game (if they both make it) gets in.

by Brian Floyd on Mar 6, 2010 10:55 AM PST up reply actions

If neither of these teams played in the Pac, they would barely get a sniff by the committee

That may be true

But they do so they will.

I also think Cal’s high RPI (23) will net them a higher seed than folks think.

They may get bumped up a line

To get the psuedo-home court edge in San Jose, since the Zags will be the top seed in the West’s other first round site, Spokane.

Compare that to Richmond

Wins
Mizzou (neutral)
Florida (away)
Temple (home)
Dayton (home)

twice as many quality wins.

SDSU, on the other hand

Wins over:
UNM
UNLV
Both at home and they’re being talked about as in.

I like both these teams in the tourney this year. Long with good guards. I could see Reynolds having one of those (you’re going to pick me way too early in the NBA draft because of how I played in the tourney) type tourney’s

I HATE the 1-3-1 trap

When it’s run well by a disciplined team, it’s frustrating as hell to play against

And didn’t have a FG the last 12 minutes. Suicide inducing.

That's what I hate

Boring D, ugly offense, ugly games (sounds like I’m describing Bennett games). I’m glad I couldn’t see them on TV.

Nova and WVU are both very active on D which is fun to watch.

why isn’t Reggie Moore a duck? I hate you for taking the cousin of Aaron Brooks to f-in Pullman

If Lute didn’t leave and Gaddy didn’t switch to UW, they had their eyes on Moore.

Bone snuck it and snagged him.

Huggins had better watch it

He might get ejected if he does that again.

Nova was up big

But WVU made the adjustments they needed. For such a guard dominated team, Nova needs to shoot FTs better.

No, not at all

Based on the SEC last year, though, we’ll get two. In fact, they were almost the same as the Pac-10 is this year and were incredibly lucky to get 3 in

by Brian Floyd on Mar 6, 2010 10:59 AM PST up reply actions

I’ll say this. ASU or UW have to make it to the final game to get in. If neither makes it and gets upset… we’re looking at Cal only

The SEC only got the extra bid though

Because of bubble buster MSU winning the conference tourney (and crapping out to UW in Portland in the first round).
