If this is true who do you think takes over?

Rather who do you want to take over?

Obviously Few is everyone's favorite.

I think Oregon will have to go with a big name. They need someone who can attract interest in and of himself. The dollars will be worth it because if they try to be thrifty, they will just stay mediocre and there would be no point in the firing. Plus, if Phil Knight donated $100 million for the stadium, he’ll have no problem loaning a few more for a coach that will make it worth his investment.

A few others names that come to mind: Steve Lavin, Jeff Capel, Mark Turgeon, Mark Turgeron, maybe Tubby. If I were Belotti, I’d go after a few guys in the multi-million a year range as well. It’d be worth it in the long run.

I don't need to wikipedia him, I watched every one of those teams.

He had 5 sweet 16’s in 6 years, followed by a bad season in which they let him go.

My reaction is more that I don’t care for the slick personality rather than the coach, but I was never convinced by the coach either.

I know that many fans are probably very happy bythis. But to me a decided non-fan, it is the end of an era. When I was at Cal, Ernie Kent was a remarkably successful coach. He had the two Lukes. Went to the Elite Eight at least once that I can remember (I think!). Unfortunate that it apparently has ended this way.

2 elite eights BTW

I think this is the best for the school. Now they can put their feelers out early and be first in line for the good coaches that are looking to move. I’m not happy, but Oregon has to do what is in it’s best interest and this is the first step

I’ve wanted Kent gone for some time now, I’ve been outspoken about it in the sense that I say he needs to go. But even hearing this news makes me sad. Kent brought this program to new highs – two Elite Eights, brought us mancrushes like AB and the Lukes. Still I am sad, excited about the future, but sad.

I applaud the things he did for our program and wish him the best in the future.

by westspec on Mar 6, 2010 7:37 PM PST up reply actions

I'm with you there

I don’t dislike him as a person, in fact he’s done a lot of great things for the program. It’s just time for a change and time for someone new to run the basketball team. I’m glad to see change is coming though, it will be better in the long run and give us all something to talk about until Football starts up again.

by JonathanPDX on Mar 6, 2010 7:46 PM PST up reply actions

Who would ever feel good about someone getting fired?

Of course it is sad or nostalgic if you consider the person remotely decent as a human being, it was just clear I think the job was not getting done, save a few amazing recruitment successes that let to on court success – jones/rid/jackson and brooks.

It just wasn’t the coaching. Unfortunately, coaches should be good at coaching too.

Alright, I’ve already bored myself with old arguments.

Thanks Ernie for the ride.

I couldn’t disagree more. I respect and am thankful for all that Ernie has done for my school. That being said, since the conversation was had two weeks ago, it’s amazing it hasn’t leaked earlier than the day or two before it’s officially announced.

Ernie is a class guy for staying on for the remainder of the season, but Bellotti and the athletic department are in no way classless for this.

Wrong move...

Next year it is a no brainer if the results are anything less than a deep tournament run; this year it is iffy and contingent upon whom they can get. Two parts tear me up: that Kent will not get to coach in the house he built, and that no matter what HIS RECRUITED JUNIORS WILL WIN WAY MORE GAMES NEXT YEAR and Ernie won’t get the credit.

I don’t envy Mike Bellotti in this situation. There are easy fires and then there’s this situation, Ernie being a former player and achieving many milestones during his tenure. If it weren’t for the need to fill the new arena, Kent might have been given another year, considering he won five more conference games than a year ago (albeit in a very watered down conference).

Bellotti now faces an even greater challenge in landing a coach that will not only will quickly lift this team back to a competitive level, but will also energize the fan base and their pocketbooks.

I don’t have any issue with the decision being made two weeks ago. Or even that Kent was notified before the end of the season. We may find out a hire is already done, maybe had to be done early to beat out another team for whoever the hire is. But I agree with others who’ve posted tonight…I do not like how this is being revealed. Ernie Kent deserves more respect than that and Bellotti needs to address the leak.

Someone needs to lose a job

You can’t have a leak like this from your department (unless the leak came from Kent’s staff).

This day has finally come

how bittersweet.

It really doesn’t feel all that great. I like EK. He’s done so many good things for us. But we also know that this move was needed. I look forward to the new adventure, but also wish Ernie the very best. If Ernie still wants to coach, I hope he has great success. He is a Duck, will always be a Duck, and when I look back on his tenure, the good times will stick out a lot more than the bad.

Agree with Jeremy. This shouldn’t have been leaked so early. EK deserves more than that, and hopefully, Bellotti will rectify the situation.

Lots more good than bad.

My favorite game memory will be that nasty beat down of USC in the ’07 Pac-10 tournament championship. Followed closely by Champ Oguchi slapping the Huskies around in the tournament the year before that. Aaron Brooks

Luke Jackson scoring 29 straight against Colorado. That was amazing. How about the big plays by Freddie Jones to take down Wake Forest and Texas in back-to-back Big Dance games. Good times.

So, way to overshadow the game

Between the Pit Crew chanting whatever the hell they were and the Kent news being leaked, the game itself became a footnote. It’s a shame because it was a good win by Oregon in the last meaningful game at Mac Court.

ESPN saying Kent won't talk about it

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=4972940

Quote:

Oregon coach Ernie Kent would not comment about a report Saturday night that he has already been fired before his 13th season with the Ducks ended.

With 12 minutes remaining in the Ducks’ 74-66 win over Washington State in the final Pacific-10 Conference game at McArthur Court, Eugene’s KVAL-TV reported that Oregon athletic director Mike Bellotti told Kent he would not return as coach next season on Feb. 22.

Bellotti said he would make his decision on Kent’s status “around the [Pac-10] tournament,” which begins Wednesday in Los Angeles.

“I have no comment about that,” Bellotti said as he left the building Saturday night. “Ernie and I have talked and we will continue to talk and that’s it.”

Kent, who played at Oregon from 1973-77, deflected questions about his reported firing following the game. He repeatedly changed the subject toward his seniors and his former coach Dick Harter, who was honored before Thursday’s game.

I’ve been waiting for this headline since the 2007 season. Now that he’s gone, let everyone get all their nostalgia out of the way, and move on. He is not, and was not, a nice guy. He was a pompous jerk and I’m glad he’s gone.

by oregon_fan on Mar 6, 2010 11:01 PM PST reply actions

He was a pompous jerk and I’m glad he’s gone.

I know you had a bad experience with him given (what I believe to be) your story on shaking his hand on Oregon Live but my experiences couldn’t be more polar opposite. If the report ends up being true, I will certainly go through my nostalgia, which I’ve been doing most of the season anyway because of the new arena and look back on his career as someone who took us to the next level but might have stayed a bit too long.

All of my interactions with him, and I’ve had several, have been extremely positive in all different venues. From games, to community service events to other meetings. I’m sorry your encounter was so distasteful because mine were no where in the same ballpark as yours

Yep,

thanks for acknowledging my post on Oregonlive; every word of it is true. I was extremely surprised how he blew me off. I mean, I could understand it if we were in Eugene, if I was drunk, or if he was busy or with other people around. The fact is, he was simply standing there, alone. The fact that we were on the road at a bowl game, I guess I expected better of him. He should have behaved as an ‘ambassador’ for the university, but he acted like a jerk. It’s too bad, but my impression of him is not positive. I will not reminisce about Ernie Kent, but the players who carried him through his coaching blunders. I will give him props in one area: academics. He was one of the best in the nation at graduating players, and I respect that aspect of the work he performed, I just can’t respect the man.

by oregon_fan on Mar 6, 2010 11:29 PM PST up reply actions

It seems like an anomaly

He could’ve been having a bad day. He still shook your hand, at least. One poor moment shouldn’t lead to you labeling a man a pompous jerk.

by Brian Floyd on Mar 6, 2010 11:36 PM PST up reply actions

I treat my interactions with people like I treat my restaurants. If I just don’t like it, you get a second or third chance at a first impression. If you make me sick the first time out though, that’s going to stick with me for quite awhile before I give it another opportunity.

Nor Cafe Zenon

way back in the day. I hear they’re under new management now, but back in the 90’s, had a bad experience and had never been back because of the poor service. Too bad, too, I liked the food.

by oregon_fan on Mar 7, 2010 9:05 AM PST up reply actions

Happens at a lot of restaurants. Maybe most of them.

At one time the Excelsior was far and away the best restaurant in Eugene. Then, in the early 90s, new ownership, menu change, meh; never went back. No idea if it even still exists.

A new owner/manager is always under pressure to outperform his or her predecessor. Maybe a new owner can’t afford to keep the kitchen talent in place because they’re paying too much for the restaurant.

Sorry to hear about Zenon’s decline. Before I left Eugene in 2000 it had been The Place To Go for a good Sunday breakfast, dessert and wine after an event at the Hult, or a special-occasion dinner. Where do people go in Eugene for those things now?

everything is history, eventually.

Glenwood and Turtles are delicious

but not nice, special occasion type places. The wife and I used to go to Ambrosia. Good food, good ambiance.

I would argue that Bepe and Gianni’s fits this definition, or at least it should

Yeah, Beppe & Gianni’s is definitely in that category.

They call him Rags. Where he goes, no-hitters follow.

I've never had sweet tea,

But I sure vouch for the other two items!

This off-season officially sucks for FIVE reasons and counting...

by CaDuck on Mar 7, 2010 8:18 PM PST up reply actions

Sweet tea just isn’t popular on the Pacific coast.

I worked with a ton of guys back in Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi. Going to a restaurant was always funny.

They’d order a “coke” and get a Coca-Cola when they really wanted a Dr. Pepper or a Root Beer or they’d be told “Is Pepsi okay?”.

They’d order “iced tea”, and forgot that we don’t taint our tea with sugar. They would then put in about 4 scoops of sugar, and stir it for about 15 minutes, and bitch about how bad their iced tea tastes.

I’ve lived on the Pacific coast my whole life, and you’re right that sweet tea isn’t popular out here, but how anyone can manage to choke down tea without sugar is beyond me.

You can get sweet tea in jugs out here, but I have no idea how it compares to actual Southern sweet tea. I do know that I’m jealous.

Drink tea without sugar. Preposterous.

That's what I figured

My parents will usually keep a jug of the stuff around (I don’t even remember what brand it is), and it’s good, but I figure it probably doesn’t hold a candle to the real thing.

Poor guy.

Come to Neyland this September, watch some Duck football, and have a glass of tea on me.

Did you know that playing in the SEC makes your football team inherently better than everyone else's?

by oregon_fan on Mar 7, 2010 9:02 AM PST up reply actions

It doesn't take much effort.

I was at a convention in San Diego back in the late summer of 2001. I was walking behind the SDCC along the marina and almost literally ran into Henry Bibby, who was in town for another convention. I said “Hi, Coach”, and he immediately shook my hand, wanted to know how I was, noticed my Oregon hat and made a comment about how he thought the Ducks “should be good this year” (never knew if he was referring to FB or hoops).

Maybe took 30 seconds of his life, but made an immediate positive impression, not just of him but of his institution.

Could be you just caught him on a bad day, but EK has never struck me as a “Hail fellow, well met” kind of person.

everything is history, eventually.

by benzduck on Mar 7, 2010 10:43 AM PST up reply actions

Agreed...

It would have taken just as much effort to shake my hand like a man and say thanks for traveling down to support the team. That’s all I wanted. Didn’t want an autograph, picture, or a loan … just a small amount of mutual respect for being an alum, donor, and a fan in general. It would have taken him all of about 5 seconds to build some good will, as it was, I was one of those screaming for his head.
