I want to say "So, big deal"
But these guys have to see what’s going on. Sure, most college kids are going to drink at some point or do something stupid, I understand that. But you’re on scholarship, a number of other guys on your team have been busted lately for stupid stuff putting everyone "on notice, AND a buddy of yours just lost a year of playing time for driving drunk? How stupid can you be?!
It is was something else, I might be able to get along with this line of reason. But it’s a freaking minor in possession. I just can’t get upset about a college kid for drinking.
And as this is pretty much a harmless citation, we can laugh it off, and I believe most national media will as well. Sure, some blow hards won’t, but I could care less what they think.

Be prepared for Canzano’s 5,000 word column about how the continuation of the process of CK losing institutional control is happening yet again.

MIP…a fine and community service.

could or couldn't care less?
… here is the rub: Kelly was just on ESPN the other week saying that his players had to realize that playing football was a privilege that could be taken away if they don’t follow the rules. The MIP is not the issue, the fact that the line was drawn and crossed again is the issue.
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
First, I’d say that the line has been drawn for some time. If you break team rules at Oregon, you’ll be punished severely.
I also don’t consider an MIP to be “crossing the line.”
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
I don't really disagree ...
… but does CK consider it as crossing the line? Do his bosses?
Damn, my eyeball tastes good.
Chip Kelly’s a minor?
They call him Rags. Where he goes, no-hitters follow.

OK, OK move on
I don’t think you should reset to zero on this one. college kid + beer = normal. They are 18,19 and learning about life, let them live it making small mistakes along the way. No mistakes here at 18, or 19….er… except for that Viet Nam thing. I am glad I don’t live in a glass house like the duck football players do. Any real news out there?
Normal and no huge deal, yes. Actual police action, and press, also yes.
Reset to zero. Did we make it to double digits that time?
My parents don't believe in Canzano either.
I think we made it to double digits
There are about 180 days left until football season starts. So, if (and that is a big IF) the players can consistently wait ten days until another stupid move on their part, we only have to deal with another 18 or so arrests. Not bad.
This off-season officially sucks for FIVE reasons and counting...
Not too shabby at all.
Maybe one violation per scholarship player, or one for every player on the roster is acceptable. They should make sure to talk about it and coordinate so they don’t duplicate any given offense, that would be less interesting. Each player should have his own specialty offense.
Some possibilities:
Racketeering – CE Kaiser
Urinating in Public – Casey Matthews
Impersonating and Officer – Kenyon Barner
Conspiracy to Commit Mail Fraud – Jeff Maehl
Unlawful Use of an Architect’s License – Boseki Lomboko
My parents don't believe in Canzano either.

it pales in comparison to others sure
and its not a big deal when you look at it objectively. but put in context with all thats been going on, etc. and its worthy of a facepalm

I'm outraged!
Outraged that a college student is dumb enough to get CAUGHT by a cop while drinking. I started drinking when I was 13, and nearly every weekend until I was legal. Zero MIP’s, ever.
Come on Kaddu, you Kaddu better than that.
Oh come on, somebody had to make that pun, it may as well be me.
I think we can
There’s obviously no reason to get all self-righteous about it, as I’m sure 98% of us enjoyed some sort of alcoholic beverage in college. But I don’t think it’s too much to call breaking the law an incident. Especially when these guys are now PAINFULLY aware at how precisely they have a microscope trained on them.
At least we could hope that if/when they’re going to drink, either stay out of public or don’t drink enough to where you’re going to do stupid crap and draw attention to yourself.
Defending maligned chants since 2009
98% of the college kids in Eugene were probably drinking at 12:38 in the morning.
But Kaddu was just one of the unlucky ones that got caught.
Face the facts, kids drink in college, and sometimes get busted. It’s not a major issue, at all. He’ll pay a fine or do community service, and it will be over with.
I have a mancrush on the Maehlman.
by TennesseeQuackAttack8 on Mar 7, 2010 10:00 AM PST up reply actions
That's not true
Not that many kids drink. Most of my friend drank maybe three or four times before we turned 21. Were we typical? No, but we knew quite a few people who didn’t need to drink to have a good time.
Look, it’s still against the law, and the law is there for a reason, even if you don’t agree with the reason. I never said it was a major issue, but it is an incident, and Kaddu should have been smarter than that. If you do something illegal, you’re not “unlucky” if you get caught.
Defending maligned chants since 2009
Yes, drinking when you’re under 21 is against the law. But I personally think it’s a counterproductive law that does more harm than good.
So, I honestly don’t care if our players follow that law, as long as it doesn’t get in the way of their other obligations.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
I agree with you about the drinking age, but isn’t this a pretty clear case of getting in the way of his obligations? Namely the obligation not to f*ck things up for the team? I don’t begrudge him getting drunk, but getting lit to the point to doing what he did, given all the recent crap…what a maroon.
I hate maroons.

I didn't mean that literally. But a large majority probably were drinking at the time.
Fact is, it’s not a big deal that will probably be blown out of proportion by the media.

These guys need to smarten up.
They need to realize they each have a GIANT BULLS EYE on their backs. They need to stay squeaky clean, or at least be smarter about their ‘indiscretions’. The fact is that if they get so much as a jaywalking ticket, it’s going to make headlines.
Wait, college kids drink!?!?!?!
News to me.

So what happens if...
they get hot, Porter shoots out of his mind, and they win the Pac 10 tourney. They get a bid to the Big Dance, make a Cinderella run and make the Final Four!!!
Probably like how Arizona made their tournament run last year with (pardon the pun) a lame duck coach

While I agree that it is just a MIP, not a big deal at college, but....
What the hell was he doing trying to get into his car? This is still a coachable moment he got caught because he was doing something stupid. Just because you are drunk it doesn’t mean you have to be stupid. Have fun, but please stop doing stupid shit!
Say what you mean, and say it mean. - Clint Ruin
Yeah, I don’t care about the MIP part of this. But being anywhere near a car, or trying to get in one, that was disconcerting. Luckily for him, it did not progress to that point.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
JT – I concur that MIP isn’t that big a deal. Bad timing, though, and much overreaction will ensure. That said, I think there may be a record number of attendees at Chip Kelly’s Monday Night Lights sessions when the time comes. I think Chip should invite the entire community to come watch the rule breakers run ’til they puke.

I think I have a new favorite Duck...
In talking to Ryan Clanton on Facebook, he wanted me to convey to the fan base that any help in keeping the team out of trouble is appreciated. Also…
“we have alot of making up to u guys but the whole team is dedicated”
and
“yeah but we are all a team and i am willing to take the responsibiliy of my teammates” (in response to me commenting on how it’s a shame that the players who don’t get themselves into trouble have to pick up the slack for the ones that do)
This is the kind of attitude that the team needs going forward. I love it.

In the few photos of him I have seen, he looks mean.
I like a mean offensive lineman, he should shape up to be a great player.
Gotta love that attitude as well.
