Quack Fix: Humphrey will transfer, conference expansion hot topic at BCS meetings
Is there any possibility we re-hire Ernie Kent? I think, at this point, it should at least be considered. (And yes, I'm being sarcastic.) Here's your Wednesday Morning Quack Fix:
- In case you missed it, news broke yesterday that Matt Humphrey has decided to transfer. And, to add insult to injury, the deciding factor was Oregon's inability to fill the coaching vacancy left after Kent was let go over a month ago. Dave pretty much summed up how I feel about the whole situation.
- In other news, ESPN.com's Ted Miller, reporting from the BCS meetings in Scottsdale, discussed the topic of conference expansion extensively yesterday. According to Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott, the Pac-10 doesn't need to expand. And as far as Big Ten expansion, well, so far, not much has been said, aside from speculation.
- In what appears to be an effort to potentially replace embattled quarterback and professional sexual assaulter Ben Roethlisberger, the Pittsburgh Steelers acquired Byron Leftwich from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers yesterday. How is this relevant to ATQ? Because Leftwich could be competing with former Oregon QB Dennis Dixon for the starting job should Big Ben be convicted of the millions of crimes he's, in all likelihood, committed. (The truth is, I only wrote this paragraph in an effort to, for the first time, mention Big Ben's gray penis on ATQ. Mission accomplished!)
- "Slick Rick" Neuheisel opened his big trap again yesterday, this time to voice his opinion on why Pete Carroll left USC for the NFL. Ignoring the obvious reasons (NCAA sanctions, a disappointing season, a golden opportunity, etc.), NeuWeasel, in part, credits Oregon. Okay, that's a somewhat opportunistic conclusion. It seems Rick will stop at nothing to bury the hatchet with Oregon fans. Maybe he should consider applying to replace Kent...
As always, leave any relevant links or comments below.

Oregon baseball stomped a not very good Gonzaga team last night, winning 7-2.
A new national ranking didn’t faze No. 18 Oregon on Tuesday as the Ducks defeated Gonzaga, 7-2, at the Patterson Baseball Complex.
Oregon improves to 24-12 on the year, while Gonzaga falls to 13-23-1.
UO shortstop KC Serna led the Ducks with a 2-for-4, four RBI performance that included a two-run double in the second and a two-run homer in the eighth. It was the first round-tripper of 2010 for Serna, and the fourth of his career.

Well, Reggie bush WILL NOT be deposed after all.
After four years of fighting, former USC running back Reggie Bush opted Tuesday to settle a civil law suit against him filed by a failed sports marketer, rather than provide sworn testimony in a deposition this week, according to a report from Yahoo! Sports.

I don't buy that the coaching search was the cause of Humphrey transferring
It’s just not the case. He’s transferring for PT, like almost all players, not because of a coaching search.
That's why I think we have to careful about judging what a player
may or may not have done under Ernie’s system. Most came to Oregon with lots of stars and I’m not sure we saw the player that Ernie hyped them to be.
“Funny” coincidence – the last two years we’ve gone to a scholar-athlete dinner. This year the BB players there were Humphrey, Sim, Wiley, and Singler. Now two are gone. Last year the FB players were Roper, Pflugrad, Masoli, Harper, Turner (and probably others). Three out of that group transferred a week later. Maybe they should cancel that dinner next year.
I really don't care about stars or recruit evals
They just don’t matter. It gives you an idea of what a service thinks a kid’s ceiling is, but as soon as the kid steps on campus you can throw the stars out the window. There’s a multitude of factors that contribute to their development, some being on the coach and lots being on the player themselves. For whatever reason it just doesn’t pan out for quite a few.
i’m always confused by this. in football, stars don’t matter because their are soo many players that are under the radar. if you plan on competing on a national level in basketball, you need the top ranked players. now you still have to recruit the right kids to fit your system but talent usually wins out in basketball because 1 or 2 guys can take over games unlike football, baseball, etc. i have a nunch Nike is trying to be a west coast kentucky not a west coast butler.
Life is about growth. People are not perfect when they're 21 years old. - Bill Walton
If you want to compete nationally in football, stars do matter. They matter a lot. In fact, overall talent level/star rating of your program is so important because you have so many players. If you want to be successful nationally, you need to be talented at every single position. Overall star rating is a crude yet effective way to measure this.
Basketball is very different because much talent will not be around very long due to NBA draft rules. Success isn’t always found in the star system, because some coaches prefer to stay away from the one-year players and prefer to get the best that won’t be going pro right away.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
I agree. Football is about acquiring quality depth due to so many things that can happen during the season – you need a LMJ to replace a LGB or a Boyett to step up. The only college basketball coach that refused to recruit potential 1-2 yr guys was Bobby Knight towards the end of his career. on a side note, Bobby Knight ended up in Lubbock Tx and being irrelevant.

Coach K hasn’t played the one-and-done game either, and that worked out pretty well for him.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
check where his roster from last year was rated when the came to him. Singler, Plumlee, Dawkins etc. Kyrie Irving (#1 PG) coming next year. his last few classes have been pretty sick and, strangely, its the first time they’ve won in 10 years. sometimes they just end up staying because college is fun.
Life is about growth. People are not perfect when they're 21 years old. - Bill Walton
Obviously Coach K’s classes are rated very high. But he’s not getting that John Wall’s. He’s getting the second round NBA talent, which is pretty much exactly what you want to do.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
This always happens though. People leave, and use lame excuses to get out.
Unless these kids didn’t want to be away from Ernie (which may or may not have been the case), we were gonna see transfers anyway.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
at least one anyway with Drew Wiley. Hard to tell on others at this point. We’re still pretty early in the process.

Whether I or this community thought it was a good reason to fire Ernie or not is irrelevant, but undoubtedly an oft cited argument to fire Ernie was to ignite the fan base and sell more tickets at the new arena.
So how are we doing on that goal? Do people think that any new name will generate interest? Will the stadium itself be enough to sustain enthusiasm? Would that goal have been better served by keeping Kent now that a “big proven name” seems allusive?

Genuine inquiries are fine
At this point it’s redundant and the inquiries, based solely out of spite, are unneeded.
1. ‘we’ are doing fine. Phil Knight told me the other night he’d have a new list of names once the NBA Playoffs are over.
2. not any name. maybe we can get Joe Montana to stop doing those terrible Sketchers Shape-Up shoe commercials…
3. i will be going to a game or two at the new stadium even if we are terrible. at least its not Gill Coliseum.
4. going .500 with the resources that Kent had at his disposal is unacceptable. i’d rather let someone else either succeed or fail equally.
Life is about growth. People are not perfect when they're 21 years old. - Bill Walton
So if we hire for example...
Coach Murphy from South Medford High School, (Canzano’s source told me last night it is a definite possibility) I think the stadium and curiousity even in that scenario will be enough to keep it sold out for a while.
Losses and inept play though will quickly suffocate that fire though. Two things that were definite possibilities even with EK. But still, think like Pac ten play is starting, and UW is coming to town I think will sell it out again…

What will ignite the fan base is being competitive in basketball. In that sense, any coach that is not P. J. Carlesimo will be an improvement.
As far as the stadium sustaining enthusiasm, it will sustain attendance, not enthusiasm. I think that any new coach will have a full building for the first year and a half. The first season will be only 9 games long, and if any semblance of competitive basketball is seen, it will be full for another year. After that, it will be all on the new coach.
But I don’t same holds true for Kent. The fanbase had turned on him. He had too much baggage. He had burned the fanbase too many times. A new coach will get some leeway for a year or two. Kent didn’t have that. Failure next year or the year after (both very likely based on past performance) would have killed any momentum of the new building.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
This is exactly it. As Tako pointed out, you can have a beautiful stadium and still draw terrible crowds if the product sucks. But there is usually a grace period of a season or two. After that, the product needs to improve. However, I think that the disenchantment towards Kent, whether fair or not, would have negated the grace period to some extent. A new face, as long as it’s not someone terrible, will give enough hope that people will come.
Oh yes, Ray, people will come.

I personally don’t believe you’re asking for basic inquiry – to serve your personal curiosity. if you’re throwing a couple a game, you’re probably okay. If you’re throwing 15 or 20 a game, big problem.

It also depends on what kind of breaking pitch you throw. I threw a big 12-to-6 over the top curve, which is much easier on your arm than a slider because it’s more of a total body pitch. But yeah, my kids are throwing nothing but fastballs and changeups until high school.

He’s so right.
Pacific has a history of being bad. Hell, I loved high school football and had some success, but I opted not to play at P.U. because it wasn’t worth all that trouble to get beat 56-6 by Western Washington on a perfectly sunny Saturday afternoon.
I kid you not… My freshman year, Pacific lost their alumni game. My senior year they went 4-3-2 and the sports information director made me write up a press release claiming the Boxers’ first winning season in something like 30 years. Is it really a winning season when you played nine games and won four? I was taking pics on the sidelines when a Pacific player came off the sidelines to tackle a Linfield DB who was on his was to a pick-6…it was shown on Monday Night Football because one of the MNF producers was a Linfield grad. So pathetic.
