Ducked Up Image: Cliff Harris

Harris-3_medium

Arriving late last year, Cliff Harris was expected by many to redshirt his Freshman season.  Injuries to the secondary and some stellar practicing by CH3 forced him into the rotation probably earlier than many expected.  Like others that were asked to step up last year, Harris definitely made an impact in the defensive backfield.

Star-divide

In only his second appearance, Harris had 5 tackles, broke up 2 passes and had his first career interception to halt a Husky drive near the end zone.  He had a career high 6 tackles against Arizona, ended the season with a total of 19 tackles and led the team in passes broken up with 8.

This upcoming year, expect to see a lot more of Harris on the field, both on defense and also on special teams.  Harris had 2 returns for 49 yards in the Rose Bowl, and with the increased load that Barner is most likely going to be taking on offense, expect Harris to be returning a lot more kicks just like other DB's before him.

Thank you, I'll take that Mr. Locker

why is Daryle Hawkins kicking Darron Thomas?

Wait … is that right?

Just realizing… how much praise Cliff Harris would be getting nationally if he caught all the potential INTs that came his way…

Go Cliff! Take the ball to the HIZZY!

I’m so excited for our defensive secondary this year. We have guys that can cover (TJ3, CH3, Mitchell, Patterson, Gildon, Boyett, Lewis) and guys that can lay the hammer too (Lewis, Pleasant, Peppars, Johnson).

This is going to be a real fun year to watch them go up against some really good QB’s in the Pac like Licker, Luck, and Foles (all of which will be at home this year).

Licker Luck and Foles

sounds like our pac-10 Law Firm to me.

Did he just have one INT last year? Seems like it was more. I’ll put him down for 4 next year.

by daisyduck on May 13, 2010 1:50 PM PDT reply actions

Yep, only one.

Agh, I can still remember the drop against ASU. Freshman mistakes…

I put him down for 3 picks, one of those being a pick six, and one return TD this season.

I’m going with 3 picks and I want to see at least 2 return TD’s next year from special teams. Hard to believe that Barner only had one return TD and WT3 had one punt return TD last year. I think special teams will have a much bigger impact next year as a lot of good young players see more time.

Barner had two...

if not for holding! Between him and CH3 we should be good for at least two next year.

There were some rumors that the NCAA rejected some of his online classes. It’ll come down to the wire, as it did with Harris.

I am still happy that we were able to burn Bro-Ho's redshirt season.

UCLA better hope for better QB play this season.

How do you pronounce that? I can't remember.

But I seem to remember having a lot of fun with it in the game open thread.

Or was it because he has a sort of hippie, Bjorn Borg, Jesus haircut?

I am not a Communist, a Communist's lawn would never look this good.

I think I have got the pronunciation of Brehaut down.

But the QB for ASU, Samson Szakscyzkaghsgsky, on the other hand…

I see that you guys don’t really know Cliff Harris that good. . If he got those stats coming in the season late and not much playing time. Just try to imagine if he had came off the bench earlier. That’s why he’s known as WOO.

by lcsingle1 on May 14, 2010 9:16 AM PDT reply actions

No doubt that his stats would have been better. But, correct me of I’m wrong, they were trying to redshirt until WT3’s injury.

Either way, he needs to win his position battle before his stats really jump up. I’ve got hope!

I think he’ll win the position battle. I think the coaches are just keeping him working to get there. The kids got a world of talent (hands, speed, reads, breaks). I think the coaches want to make sure he works his ass off and becomes the player he’s supposed to be.

I have little worries on whether Harris will see a lot of time or make plays. It’s going to be up to him on how much.

to correct the correction...

The reason why Harris didn’t see playing time until later in the season was because he missed almost the entire fall camp before officially being admitted to school thanks to the ass-dragging NCAA clearinghouse. With almost zero time in the program practicing with the team he was an obvious redshirt candidate regardless of skills, injuries necessitated eventually getting him on the field once he had time to learn some of the basics of the defense and practice with the team.

I remember John Neal saying he was the best cover corner on the team at one point last year, but that he lacked other skills.

It was at the start of the season

They said he could come in and cover anybody, but he didn’t know the defense to play in the zone or run coverage.
