Summer Reading

Well there's no football for several months, no college hoops, and since we're on the left coast baseball doesn't really count.  This does open up plenty of geek reading time, so let's talk about books!  There's a lot of good stuff that relates to AtQ through specifics about college athletics or sports in general, and I'm sure the AtQ brain trust has a wealth of beer and candy-related resources to share as well.

I'm going to toss out one AtQ related book suggestion and one completely unreleated one.  If others can jump in maybe we'll find some interesting reads to help us get through the next hundred days.

Bowls, Polls, and Tattered Souls (Stewart Mandel)

I love college football, this book is about college football, therefor I love this book.  It sure doesn't make you feel good about the system we have or the people in charge, but it explains why we have this stupid system.  I'm a big fan of Stewart Mandel during the football season and the book feels like his columns do, but he goes even deeper into each issue and pokes holes in all the stuff we fans would love to see.  I wish it was a blueprint for playoffs, competitive scheduling, and a national ban on the color purple.  But it's still a great read even if you're like me and think our current BCS system is dumber than a Corvallis paint-huffing competition.  At least now you'll understand why the BCS paint-huffers do things they way they do.

And now, for a completely off-topic book recommendation:

The Music Lesson (Victor Wooten)

I'm super biased because Victor is a friend; I've been to 4 Bass / Nature camps he's run in Nashville, we've played together numerous times, and I actually read one of the voices for the Audio Book that's being released in July.  That being said, this is a very hip book if you're into music.  It's fiction and not at all an instruction book or even about the bass guitar.  It's about a musician who's sort of stuck and not real happy about where he's at, and this crazy person comes into his life and tries to teach him lots of strange things in unusual ways.  Many of the concepts are about music, but the lessons are bigger than just sitting down and plucking some strings.  I'm often asked what Victor teaches at the Camps out in Nashville, and it's really hard to describe.  But The Music Lesson has the same vibe and a lot of the same ideas.  For example: How would you think about music, as you were playing it, if you weren't allowed to think about or even PLAY the notes?  :)

So there's my suggestions for interesting summer reading.  My library fines are all paid off, what are your recommendations?
