Day 2 Practice Recap
Better get used to the sound of a high-school kid reading in your ear. Seems like Quinn and I are the guys who will be there every day. Anyway, onto the wrap-up. All pictures were taken by yours truly.
- Bryan Bennett continued to impress all onlookers today on the field. While we should wait to make judgements until the end of the week when they start going full pads, I'm having a hard time doing that. Watching the young guys putting in a little extra work with the backfield of Bennett and Seastrunk withHuff Lowe and White split wide nearly made me swoon.
Justin Hoffman has continued to build on his strong spring with an excellent fall. He appears to have a great rapport with both quarterbacks. I have only seen 2 wideouts make every catch: Maehl and Hoffman. In terms of newcomers, Josh Huff appears to be clearly ahead of the other two frosh, and Eric Dungy in particular has been talked to a ton so far.- Defensively, Cliff Harris saw reps with the #3 defense today after barely seeing the field yesterday. Eric Dargan was held out of contact after sustaining what appeared to be a minor concussion yesterday after his head lost a battle with Maehl's knee. Bo Lokombo had another interception of Costa in 11v11 and in my mind is the clear leader in the race to win the starting SAM position. Talmadge Jackson was held out of the last 30 mins of practice with a tight hamstring.
- We finally got to see Alejandro Maldonado (AKA Lady Gaga) kick some field goals today. Rob Beard was inaccurate from the left hash from 35 yards and back, while Gaga made all his kicks until he pulled a 50 yarder wide.
Enjoy the pictures, and Go Ducks

"Alejandro" is apparently Lady Gaga's newest "hit single" (whatever that means).
so its a pretty easy connection for a knowlegable football player to make.

I’m telling you, I’ve been going to fall practices for 3 years now, and I’ve never seen a freshman this good this early. He’s already usurped Hawkins as the #3 guy, and if Thomas isn’t careful (and he was wildly inconsistent today) he may be pushed for the #2 spot.
That being said, it all changes once the pads go on.

I must admit,
Cliff Harris is starting to scare me a little bit. If he is unable to win the starting job and unable to get his act together, we could have a true freshman starting at corner. That could be scary at times. I sure hope that Harris can work hard and win the job!
Based on your new profile pic, it looks like you have a serious case of man-crush on Bryan Bennett. If he keeps up his stellar practice play, he could move into the #2 spot on the depth chart.
Self-anointed President of the Kenjon Barner fan club.
I highly doubt that Bennett would be #2 on the depth chart. He should redshirt this year.
AtQ's Resident Baseball Purist.
by TennesseeQuackAttack8 on Aug 10, 2010 9:47 PM PDT up reply actions
he isn't playing like a redshirt, I'll tell you that much.
I swear I haven’t seen a guy come in and do this well in fall practice since I started going. Every pass is a tight spiral, and if it isn’t a perfect ball, it’s damn near close. only QB with 0 INTs so far in team drills, and his patience in letting plays develop is amazing for a true frosh.
"Our expectations are to win every game we play. I don’t know if that’s ever going to happen .... but no one ever rises to low expectations." --Chip Kelly
I strongly doubt it as well.
But Coach Kelly seems to be the type of coach that would put anyone on the field (or #2 on the depth chart) if they earned it. Of course it would be great to have Bennett redshirt this season, but if he really impresses and Costa or Thomas has trouble in practice and workouts, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Coach Kelly sacrifice Bennett’s redshirt to move him up the depth chart. New Mexico is the NC game! New Mexico is the only game that matters!

thats the point
I’m sure he’ll start the season with a RS and as long as costa stays healthy, it wont be an issue. we can use thomas and hawkins in mop up duty if necessary. Its a question of experience gained vs. an extra year. Simply put, does the coaching staff think he can start in 2011?
besides, he has to keep it up for another week before this is a serious issue IMO.

Let’s give the guy some more time.
The most he’ll earn this year is #3. His athletic prowess isn’t in dispute, but he could just be on fire lately. Masoli was also pretty streaky.
It’s good to know we have him on our roster, though.
it’s spelled "S-H-U-F-R-E-A-K-I-N-H-E-R-O-U-T-M-A-N"
Masoli never through a football anything like Bennett.
Masoli had very little touch on his passes for the most part and wasn’t the best at pass placement.
I wasn’t comparing how they threw the football. I’m just pointing out that Masoli was streaky – on fire and near flawless at times. Who knows if Bennett is just on a hot streak, or if this is a legit situation.
Bennett is getting an amount of love here that makes me a skeptic – I’m not ready to over-hype or be disappointed.

I get that you're fawning over the kid
But it’s 2 days of practice without pads. Lots of quarterbacks are going to look like world beaters when they’re running skellys and 11 on 11 with no pads. The drills are decidedly slanted in the offenses favor right now.

Its like a shooting hitting every three alone in an empty gym. Great you have talent, but can you do that in a game?

And it’s true. We both said that at practice we were hesitant to declare Bennett some kind of savior, but by calling him “the real deal” earlier and giving him great praise, I meant that he has displayed all the tools we had heard about during his recruitment. He looks like he has great football intelligence, work ethic, and physical tools galore. In perspective, he has outshined Thomas as a passer and as a runner so far in camp.

And he did an outstanding job. I can only think of one play off of the top of my head that he blew (Juron Criner’s 70-ish yard catch and run TD in the Arizona game). But nonetheless, it is always scary to be starting true freshman at any position.

Kid looks good
nice fluid cuts, had a good long run today. Better hands than I expected too, but nothing more/less than what we’d discussed with him prior to fall practice. He’s meeting expectations, but not in an eye-popping way like my profile picture does.
"Our expectations are to win every game we play. I don’t know if that’s ever going to happen .... but no one ever rises to low expectations." --Chip Kelly
Seastrunk is hilarious.
He’s a real energetic kid. He’s been joking with the coaches and grinning ear-to-ear the past two days. He seems to be a generally sunny individual.
He’s looked quick. Being that there has been hardly any full speed activity for anyone outside the three-deep, he hasn’t been able to flash his top gear so much. However, in drills he has done exactly what the expectations seemed to be. Hardly any coaching has been done upon him individually as far as we’ve seen in fall practices. Seems to have a great relationship with Chip Kelly, too.

I don’t know if they’re kicking out of formation yet, but I’m assuming if the Costa looks like the starter then he won’t be holding on placekicks this year. And with a new full time kicker, whoever that turns out to be, there’s no reason for him to be filling that role from a chemistry perspective.
It may not seem like an important role, but Nate played it perfectly last year. The 2 point conversion against call was the tipping point for the season, the fake kick in Washington opened up that game, and of course…Arizona.

It failed for me at first too, but then I opened the link in another tab, and it now shows up in this window.

There's a link?
All I see is the “This image stolen from PatriotResources.com” image

That's goofy.
I just did my usual stealing from google images.

I went to the link, so now it is okay for me.
But it was an image that said something like “This image is an unauthorized linked from ”http://www.patriotresource.com" target="_blank">http://www.patriotresource.com or something like that.
it’s spelled "S-H-U-F-R-E-A-K-I-N-H-E-R-O-U-T-M-A-N"
Huh. Weird.
You can expect a lot of guttural noise posts from me today. My new signature needs some exposure.
