Weirdness in McMinnville

97

Anyone catch this story? It got picked up by ESPN but I can't stand linking there. This is definitely weird. Eighteen high school athletes got isolated triceps muscle compartment syndrome after a weightlifting workout in a hot gym. Plenty of amateur internet medical opinions are blaming PEDs, overzealous coaching, and environmental toxins, but none of that makes physiologic sense to me. Bacteria and viruses sometimes cause muscle infection, but again, it would be unheard of for 18 kids to all get infection in the same exact muscle groups. Apart from obviously being concerned for the kids involved, I'm trying to satisfying my scientific curiosity; anybody with knowledge closer to the story that might be able to shed some light?
