Over/Under AND Fact or Fiction: LaMichael James

Just some hypothetical thinking on my part today...it got me wondering what AtQ would say?

LaMichael James rushed for 1546 yards last year on 230 carries.

Kenjon Barner rushed for 366 yards on 50 carries.

Will LaMichael James rush for over OR under 1300 yards in 2010 for the Ducks?

Keep in mind that LMJ is suspended for the 1st game against New Mexico. Does the likely increase in the passing game take away from his rushing stats? Does the increase in touches that we expect Barner to get take away from LMJ's total?

Bonus Question! (There is no other poll question option)

Fact or Fiction: LaMichael James will leave school and enter the 2011 NFL Draft.

He'll be eligible after this year as a Redshirt Sophomore. I've seen his name on a few sites and should be one of the top 5 RB in the country. Does that equate to his exodus into the NFL?

Post your thoughts in the comments.

And no, he will not enter into the draft.

Over. In Boise State, he hardly had any play time, and he’s a smarter and faster player now. As long as he stays healthy, he’ll get plenty of yards.

And he will not enter the draft early. Education has been a priority to him.

He will stay as long as he still needs to earn his degree.

Also, I seem to remember him fumbling early in the Utah game and Chip holding him out for the entire half. If I’m he easily lost a full game if you combine that with the game which shall not be named.

Well… if he went to Stanford, he would have known that labiodental wasn’t hyphenated, but I agree with him. Acronyms and consecutive fricatives are just unpractical.

At least the word “fricative” gives you a little break between the labiodental fricatives.

Yep, over.

My guess is whoever is at QB will carry the ball slightly less often than Masoli did…whether that will or will not be the right read at the moment may regularly be in question.

I’m wondering what the over/under for LaMichael’s receiving yards should be? Dump off passes with Davis, Maehl, Paulson and B. Williams throwing blocks downfield could be huge, and oft-utilized by our inexperienced QBs. LMJ caught 17 for 168 last year. 300 yards receiving wouldn’t shock me.

I don't deal in hyperbole.

by JConant on Aug 23, 2010 9:27 PM PDT reply actions

I'm in the minority voting under

although I hope I’m wrong. If he was playing in the NM game I would have voted over, but I have a feeling that the absence of the Masoli running threat will take a bit of toll this year. I know that both Costa and certainly Thomas can run, but I don’t believe they will be the same all-out running threat that Masoli was. So I’ll peg him at around 1250 yards this year.

I feel strongly that he won’t leave school after this year, although it’s possible that he’ll leave after his junior year, especially if he’ll be able to finish his degree at that point. I’ve read he very much wants to get his degree, and we know he has the grades (over 3.00 GPA as I undstand it) to do it pretty quickly.

Question: I’m thinking about Barner now – do kick/punt returns count in a player’s rushing yards for a season, or is it a separate category? If it’s included, I think Barner may go over 1000 as well, due to defenses keying in on LMJ in the absence of Masoli.

by daisyduck on Aug 23, 2010 10:17 PM PDT reply actions

I voted under by this logic:

Running game will be more of a two-headed monster this year.
He’ll probably lose some yards to Barner (and gain some with Masoli gone).
I can envision two, maybe three games on the schedule where we could be up six touchdowns at halftime, and Alston/Seastrunk get more PT.
I think he also will be keyed on more this year than last.

clearly over. thats too favorable a line. college running backs can easily have multiple thousand yard rushers, especially in such an offense, and i don’t see him having a decrease in 250 yards of production. he’s playing psu, and wsu. the qb isn’t going to be running as much either

by jcgoducks on Aug 23, 2010 10:42 PM PDT reply actions

and fiction

i don’t think 2 years of flash is enough to be a first round pick, which is pretty much the only reason people leave early, and he’d probably be considered too small.

by jcgoducks on Aug 23, 2010 10:43 PM PDT up reply actions

I think he’ll be over too. But not because he’s playing PSU and WSU. He actually had his only sub 100 yard regular season total (since becoming a starter) against Wazzu. So I think that playing those sorts of teams could actually hurt his chances.

Over

Mostly because I see no reason not to have faith in our star player.

The draft is an interesting question though. I think it comes down to the labour situation. If there`s a lockout, he`ll definitely stay. There`s nothing to be gained by sitting out a year and he`s going to have a better go of it in Eugene than playing for scraps in the UFL or CFL for a season.
If a lockout is avoided by the time he needs to declare, I think he’ll decide to go. Running backs have the shortest pro careers, and the general rule is if your game is based on speed go as early as possible. Also his carries stand to decrease with the emergence of Seastrunk and Williams. I think his draft stock has more to lose than gain by staying.

by AcadianTraverse on Aug 24, 2010 7:09 AM PDT reply actions

Under

I’ll join the minority and say under. Why? I just can’t forget the smile on Chips faces after a tough Rose Bowl loss when he said he’d have Barner “all of next year”. I think Barner will take some carries away from the Studmaster who, let’s face it, could use a break now and then after those 80 yard runs!

by Bobbyduckalot on Aug 24, 2010 9:32 AM PDT reply actions

A reasonable point...

I wouldn’t be shocked to see less carries for LMJ this year. In fact, I anticipate it. But he rushed for over 1500 yards last year. If he resumes the same level of production, he can average 15 rushes/game and he’d get over 1300 yards.

1300 yards/6.72avg = 193.45 att / 13 games = 14.88 att/game

That would be 3 carries less/game; If you toss out the outliers of Boise State and Purdue (Only 2 and 9 carries respectively), it would be 5 carries less/game.

I think it is very realistic that he’ll get 1300 yards, and Barner gets 800 yards. Alston will get 150 yards, and Seastrunk will get 300 yards. We’ll get 400-600 yards from QB. I think we’ll be around 3000 team rushing yards by the end of the year.

Under. I think that missing a full game, as well as seeing Kenjon getting s’more touches, I think Lamike will be in the 1200 range. Although, I sure do hope i’m wrong.

Bonus question: Lamichael will stay for his junior year and win Heismen that year.

Duck season tickets for Christmas = Best Christmas EVER.

by DuckFanAndy on Aug 24, 2010 10:39 AM PDT reply actions

Why is it assumed the Kenjon will be getting more rushes at the expense of James? Barner never had more than 10 plays from scrimmage that he touched the ball the entire season. James averaged 23.7 from the Utah game on (when he was the for sure starter). If Barner gets more touches, it will be most likely at the expense of the QB running the ball.

James touches will likely stay about the same, and would be surprised if it dropped below 18-20. Barner will get more, because I’d expect our QB to be keeping it less than before, and this will help ease the strains of a less explosive read-option.

James may have a few down games, as opponents try to key on him, but that’s not gonna last forever. The coaching staff has obviously thought about this always, and I’m confident they’ll have gameplans to take advantage of this defensive gameplan, which will then open up holes for James.

If James doesn’t get to 1300 yards, there will be something seriously wrong with our offense. It will mean that opponents will have been able to key on James, and the rest of our offense was unable to take advantage of the mismatches created by that defensive alignment.

But I believe that DT will be our starting QB, and I think that he’ll have some rushes every game. Making Barner’s carries at the expense of James.

by DuckFanAndy on Aug 24, 2010 2:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Costa or Thomas will likely have the same number of designed runs, and they probably will be less than the number of Masoli’s runs (about 10 per game).

I don’t understand why people suddenly think that Barner is going to be taking a lot of carriers from James. He didn’t last year.

--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog

by jtlight on Aug 24, 2010 3:25 PM PDT up reply actions

It's not necessarily carries, but TOUCHES

Pass plays in the TZR position and pass plays to others in general was my thought process. I don’t think Barner takes carries from LMJ at all.

May we hand you your taints on a silver platter...

by 071903 on Aug 24, 2010 4:49 PM PDT up reply actions

I should have been more clear. I’ve been meaning touches in what I’ve been talking about so far. Like I said below, Barner had 8 (from scrimmage) touches while James had 19, despite being out for about a quarter.

I just really doubt that James’ touches are going to drop significantly. They didn’t when Barner got more touches from the TZR position. James is the best player on the offense, and he’ll get his touches.

Three words: Rose Bowl Performance

I don’t think his Rose Bowl Performance out does any of LMJ’s own accomplishments.

Most of what he did in the Rose Bowl, was on special teams, and formations where LMJ was still on the field.

This. One of the biggest problems for the offense during the second half was the absence of James during the second half. It really hampered the offenses ability to move.
