As excited as I am about Thomas, I feel very badly for Nate Costa. He’s busted his ass his entire career at Oregon and fell THIS short.

Agreed totally. I went back and forth through the whole offseason. I would have been happy with either player, but it’s encouraging that DT won the job.

And as much as I hate to say it

Nate is probably more likely than not to start at least one game and it’s nice to have a guy we can trust as a backup.

Who knows?

Hopefully he doesn’t do what DD did and be too willing to take a big hit when not necessary.

Its all a matter of chance but at least we know we have a good backup who is also a fit for our system (unlike Brady Leaf backing up DD).

I had a feeling

Looking over the stats, especially from day 1 to now, Thomas appears to have improved during the summer. He sure has a lot to offer, and with a couple of very winnable (trap) games to open the season he could really get himself in tune before we start the Pac-10 schedule.

I feel for Costa, he’s a great story and works hard, and I think we will see him contribute during the season. But I’m ready to embrace Thomas as our QB.

Congrats Darron! GO DUCKS!

Congratulations Darron! Going into the season, I felt that either guy winning the job was fine for me. I’m sad for Nate but I’m happy he’s apart of the team still. Given our history at QB, it’s not like he won’t be playing.

I also think the schedule might have played a part in this decision.

Look at the first 7 games: New Mexico, @Tennessee, Portland St, @Arizona St, Stanford, @Washington St, UCLA

Overall, VERY easy. That means we can bring him along slowly and build his confidence and knowledge/feel for the system.

The only game that really scares me a bit in the first 4 is the Tennessee game

Because it IS 100k+ on the road, even if the team is no good.

That's only game in the first SEVEN that even remotely scares me

but as long as we don’t get 3 or 4 turnovers, we should be able to pull it out. Tennessee football is in shambles and it’s offense (in particular it’s passing game) is totally gutless.

But, yeah, anytime a northwest team travels cross country into SEC territory with a new QB in front of 100,000+ crazy SEC fans it’s a scary game.

Crazy things can happen on the road. New Mexico and Portland State shouldn’t be tough, but Tennessee is a long way from home, first road start, first real test, and they DO have talent. Arizona State also has a headhunter on defense and some skill, they are down but this is the Pac-10 and it’s their house. USC has shown that even Pac-10 champions can fall to underdogs on the road.

Still, they are at home, they have legit athletes and they have some motivation...

… being a road favorite is tough, especially early in the season. Purdue proved that by taking you guys to the limit last season when you visited them. Also, didn’t Stanford beat you last year? I don’t think I’d call that schedule “very easy” as axel did above.

Too bad for Nate. I was pulling for him.

by Gekko Mojo on Aug 27, 2010 3:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Tennessee has athletes

Look at their recruiting from the last couple of years, it’s impressive. I’m not saying that I predict a loss, but we have no idea how motivated they will be, what kind of coaching to expect, or how much of that highly-ranked talent will perform on the field. It will be a real test, but it’s also a huge opportunity for Thomas to introduce himself to the world.

Of course, we had low expectations when Dennis Dixon walked into the Big House too…

by JonathanPDX on Aug 27, 2010 3:37 PM PDT up reply actions

WHAT?!??

look at other team’s first 7 games. most are significantly more difficult than our’s. The Beavers play two top 10 teams, for example. I think we are, if not the only, one of the only teams, in the top 25 that don’t play any ranked opponents in the first 7 games of the season. In no way am I saying we are going to roll over every opponent until USC, but if you think the first 7 games is difficult compared to other BCS schools, you are insane.

I think so too

Throw out the non-BCS schools, and the stretch of USC, Washington, Cal, Arizona, and Oregon State looks significantly harder than the stretch of Tennessee, Wazzu, UCLA, Arizona St., and Stanford, especially when game locations are taken into account.

If this team really is rose bowl caliber, I would expect them to go 7-0, or 6-1 at the worst. But you really never know. We started off 0-1 last year, and we ended up being pretty good.

FWIW, I agree with you. UNM, PSU, ASU, WSU aren’t topping anyone’s “watch out” list any time soon. On the road at UT in game two isn’t doing any first-year QB a favor, but there’s a good possbility that the entire 2-deep and some threes will get valuable on-field experience in the first half of this season. And, yes, I think that benefits the program as a whole.

favorites...

Whenever I’m unsure about a game involving my team, and I want a more unbiased opinion I look at the line. The people who set those lines are responsible for millions. Close lines don’t necessarily mean too much, but a touchdown or more spread is a pretty big favorite.

And in the Yell-O corner, with a 2009 conference record of 8 wins, 1 loss...the REIGNING...DEFENDING...UNDISPUTED Champions of the PAC TEN...the Oregon Ducks!

I feel comfortable about the Tennessee game, but that still presents a large “unknown”. It’s going to be a rough trip for a new QB.

If Luck throws like he did last year and our offense can’t keep up, we might relive the Stanford fiasco from last year.

If UCLA shows proficiency in their offense, they could slow us down and that game could be a trap game.

Do I think we’ll go 4-3? No. I just think it is in the realm of realistic possibility. I think going 7-0 is more realistic though.

From a "Team Costa" guy

I had felt that Costa would win the job initially. But, I felt that if Costa didn’t lose the job, and Thomas was able to beat him outright, then Oregon could be looking at something special in Darron Thomas. As it happens, that is the way it has played out.

Thomas earned it, plain and simple. All the love and respect in the world to Costa, he fought hard, for years, to get this opportunity. Between pushing Dixon before the 07 season, helping to teach Masoli the offense, and now grooming and competing with Thomas, Costa has done more then all but a few to help Oregon succeed over the past few seasons. I hope someday he can dawn a Nike Oregon visor and coach our QB’s full time.

Yeah, I get it, you drink what you have to drink to survive. At my brother’s place in Boise earlier this year he offered me a cold beer. Having just driven 400 miles from SLC I was in no position to refuse. It was a Coors Light. “Thank you, Sir, may I have another?”

There isn’t a significant conceptual difference between Pyramid Apricot, or any other fruity beer, and Zima. Yet you mock Zima drinkers. At least be consistent.

IMHO, Widmer Hefeweizen is the worst thing ever to happen to the microbrew industry. Any beer that you HAVE to add produce to in order to ensure drinkability is an abomination. And yet Widmer probably would have gone under years ago without it.

Girls around here (west coast) who like football like it in a half-assed, ‘sure I’ll go to the games because it’s fun and I do want my team to win’ kinda way, and not the ‘live and die, never miss a game, ruins your whole week if they lose’ kind of way. I know. I just get a kick out of the whole “expected to exceed expectations” concept.

It was prevalent on Wall Street during the tech boom of the late 90s, where if your company didn’t beat the predicted results of the analysts your stock got hammered on the earnings reports, even if you showed spectacular growth.

I like what Ted Miller has to say.
Kelly is not interested in upside. He’s not thinking about 2011. He’s got a veteran team that is the favorite to win the Pac-10. His choice of Thomas reflects only one belief: He’s our best QB today.
Kelly has yet to fail tutoring a QB since he arrived at Oregon in 2007 as offensive coordinator. That bodes well for Thomas. Or is this the time Kelly’s magic fades? If I were a gambler, and I am, I’d lay this $5 bill on the former.

Congrats to DT…but sheesh, with the obvious exceptions of Terrance Kelly and Todd Doxey, has there even been a more hardluck Duck to come along in recent years than Nate Costa? For such a good guy he seems snakebit, must’ve drank Jobu’s rum when he was a freshman. Can’t help but feel horrible for the guy, but if recent history is any indication he’ll still get a chance to play this year, DT’s going to get dinged at some point.

Certainly hard luck, but the story's not done yet.

While I hope DT takes this and runs with it… we haven’t seen a snap yet. Masoli didn’t start his first season as the starter, and got freaking booed against Stanford, people were ready to burn him in effigy, then he went on a tear.

Oh, and then he stole a laptop, but I’m trying to forget that part. I digress.

Point being: Nate Costa still might end up winning us a Rose Bowl, for all we know.

The more I think about it, the more excited I am about the potential that Thomas has. Imagine being able to spread out the defense with a big pass play (which Thomas is seemingly more capable of doing than Masoli was) and then planting that seed of uncertainty in the defense’s mind. Imagine what that could to with our zone read game. Imagine the play action that we could use.

People, the possibilities are endless. I’m very excited. This is gonna be a fun ride.

OT: Just watched the replay of the 2000 ASU game.

One of the all-time greatest comebacks ever.

I’d forgotten what a collosal clusterfuck Snyder made of the clock management in that game.

After we blow an onside kick and get an unsportsmanlike tacked on, ASU’s up 7, with the ball on our 30 yard line and 3:10 left. We have two times out remaning. Game over, right?

First play, 3 yard run by Pace. Time out.

2nd play, false start.

3rd play, incomplete pass, stops clock.

4th play, incomplete pass. Now it’s 4th and 12 on the 32. Snyder goes for it, Steve Smith knocks down the pass, and we get the ball back with 2:20 left.

Harrington to Peele for big yardage. A couple of runs, then on 4th down Joey hits Marshaun Tucker, but he’s dropped at the 1 yard line. ASU ball, 1:10 left. Game over, right?

Two short runs. We burn our timeouts.

ASU has 3rd and 5 on their 6 with 52 seconds left. We can’t stop the clock. Conventional wisdom says play conservative, run the clock down, run the punter out of the back of the end zone, give up 2, and free-kick at the end of the game. No: ASU stretches it out, Mike Williams runs off tackle and while stretching for that last, unnecessary yard (he already had the first down) drops the ball. We recover.

Next play, Joey hits Justin Peele at the pylon. Tie game.

First OT, ASU has the ball, Krohn throws a pick to Smith, who had clear sailing to the end zone if he’d only held onto the ball instead of waving it around like a burning hamster stuck to his hand so an ASU guy could knock it away. Needing only a FG to win, Bellotti (or maybe Tedford) turns arch-conservative, 3 Amundson runs for -2 yards, and Frankel misses the FG.

2nd OT, we score with relative ease with Amundson running it in. ASU scores, but instead of forcing the 3rd OT, they try to catch us napping, throwing out of a kick formation. They miss, we win.

Wife and I saw this game down at the Wild Duck. I haven’t seen so many worn-out drunken happy fans in an enclosed place since they closed the Portland Sports Arena.

Hey everyone, here's a link you never thought you'd click.

I called in and talked to John Canzano this evening for just a minute or two on the Darron Thomas starting news. I come in at exactly 24 minutes in.

There were many misconceptions and misinformed callers weighing in all day during the show and I wanted to set the record straight on a few things. Wish I could have gotten a few more words in edgewise, but it’s John Canzano. I didn’t expect a soliloquy.

I don’t really hate John Canzano. I never said I did. He’s a sensationalist journalist that oftentimes has no real sources or credentials. There have been tonnes of them throughout history. It’s nothing new. I met the guy once at PDX Int’l and he seemed exactly like his personality on the air. Air of cockiness and self-importance, but understandably so.

I just realized there was a whole separate clause on that last sentence that I left out.

I don’t know where it went, but I originally had written:

Air of cockiness and self-importance, but naturally he must project that in his personality, so it was understandable.

Another thing that I left out was that I talked football with him for a short time. He was getting his daughter some toys and trinkets at a newsstand in the terminal where we were both on a flight to LA for the Rose Bowl. Seeing that he was a pretty caring dad changed my opinion I had held of him previously instantaneously. He predicted a Ducks win (to my surprise) and gave some good thoughts as to why. I want to hate him as much as the rest of you, but after meeting him in person and speaking to him, he’s not so bad. He just has a persona he feels he has to cultivate.

My yoke is heavy.

I actually thought the most interesting piece of that Pod Cast

Was the part about the football players in McMinville. (no offense Quinn) I was wondering what anybody with more medical knowledge than myself thinks about the doctor’s comments. HRD, do you want to weigh in here? Or are you refusing to listen to clownzano? I’ll paraphrase, she says there are cases where influenza, combined with improper hydration, and a hot environment, can lead to compartment syndrome, and she thinks the creatin thing is a dead end.

Some parents take their children's sports way too seriously

We used to go to my daughter’s softball games, and the parents of one girl (by far the best athlete on the team) were crazy. They would get on her case for not striking everybody out, not scoring, often telling her to do the exact opposite of what her coach was. So hard on her, even though she was clearly way more talented than any of her peers. The final straw was when they got on my kid’s case for screwing up a bad hop on a grounder. We’ll just say I told them what every other parent had wanted to say all season, they never talked to her, or me again. But they just kept on going with their daughter. I wonder what happened to her (the kid).

I couldn’t even get my sons to sustain any interest in football beyond a hang-out-with-the-friends level. One would spend the game dismissing the sport as puerile and unnecessarily resource-intensive, and the other chose to spend his Saturdays at home playing warcrack.

Howdy from Knoxville

Jus droppin by to let you know how much we’re looking forward to this game. Our program has had a rough couple of years, but we feel pretty good about the direction we’re headed, with a lot of young talent and an unproven coach who’s done all the right things so far. If any of you are making the trip to Knoxville, I hope you get the warm Vol Nation hospitality we’re know for. Should be a great game!

I think I'm in OO for the opener, so I'll wave :)

Make sure you’re on campus about 2 hours before kickoff for the Vol Walk as the players walk to the stadium. If you want to greet the Oregon team, they should arrive in buses at (I think) the south end of the stadium, not sure about timing. Wander around, I’m sure you can find some Oregon fans tailgating somewhere. :) Also, make sure you’re in the stadium a few minutes before kickoff for the Running Through The ‘T’. Wander down to the river to see the Vol Navy docked near Calhouns (which also serves excellent food, but be prepared for a long wait on a gameday). For the more culturally minded, McClung Museum on campus has excellent exhibits on the archaeology and geology of Tennessee; I may be biased, since I’m a product of the UT anthropology program. All in all, I think you’ll have a good time; I like to think that the majority of Tennessee fans are gracious in victory and defeat.

This is why you still have to love Nate Costa

"This is the most important practice when you’re in a situation like this," Helfrich said. "Some guys have a tendency to tank it, and Nate definitely did not do that.

"The way I look at it, it’s still a kind of a competition," Maehl said. "Darron can’t get too comfortable. He has to come to practice every day ready to get better and ready to work hard, because Nate is going to be pushing him all year."

I was a bit worried about the jersey because, as I’ve mentioned on here before, my 10 yr old had his heart set on a LaMichael James. So I tell him “I’m sorry, they didn’t have any #21’s this year, but you know Kenjon Barner is really cool too” and he looks and me says “It’s okay Mom – Kenjon Barner is cool and also, #24 was Jeremiah Johnson’s number too!!” What a little Duck I’m raising!
