Quack Fix: With Thomas as QB Ducks prepare for New Mexico, Kenjon Barner ready to breakout
That right everyone, it's game week! There was a lot of quack over the weekend, so let's get right to it:
- The big news on Friday was the announcement that Darron Thomas will be the Ducks' QB against New Mexico. Adam Jude has a piece on the reaction after Saturday's practice. Now the Ducks will work on getting the chemistry between the QB and receivers down. And let's not forget Nate Costa, who handled this entire situation with as much class as possible. Even if he's not the starting QB, he's one of the most important players on the team. KVAL has video interviews available from Kelly, Helfrich, Costa, and Thomas from Saturday's practice, so check those out.
- George Schroeder had a more Thomas-centric article, gauging how the redshirt sophomore is reacting to his promotion. While Schroeder had publicly written that Costa should get the job, he's praising Thomas now. Off the field, he's handling everything well, but he knows he has a lot of work to do if the Ducks want to achieve their goals this season.
- With LaMichael James suspended for this weeks game, Kenjon Barner will be leading the running backs. Barner had done a great job for much of 2009, but really burst onto the scene during the Rose Bowl, when he had 227 all-purpose yards. But like much of last years young team, he was still going on instinct, which led to inconsistency for much of the year. But after an offseason of hard work, with his future role known, he's made huge strides, and has his "flow back," according to RB coach Gary Campbell. KVAL has an interview with Barner available.
- New Mexico is preparing for the house of horrors that is Autzen Stadium, but though they know they'll have a stiff test, they are looking forward to putting a tumultuous 2009 season behind them.
- With one week to go, everyone's making their yearly predictions. Matt Daddy posted the predictions of all the ATQ writers over the weekend, and Avinash from CalGoldenBlogs posted a preseason poll compiled by the SBNation Pac-10 bloggers. Unlike the media, the Pac-10 bloggers are quite skeptical of USC. Ted Miller also got in on the action, and made some predictions of his own.
- Oregon women's soccer had a tough game over the weekend. Despite out-shooting SMU 22-3, the game ended in a scoreless tie. Oregon's record is now 1-1-1.
- Jon Wilner has the latest Pac-10 expansion rumors. The latest gossip is that the California schools may end up with the Arizona schools, though if that happens, expect the Northwest schools to receive some scheduling and revenue concessions.

Ah, so this is what it feels like to have your baseball team completely out of it by the beginning of September. I’m not sure I like it…but I AM excited for college football! It’s all I got.
Defending maligned chants since 2009
A lot of other Angels fans don’t feel this way (the dumb bitter ones at least), but I’m happy for you guys. I still love Vlad and there are a lot of other exciting players on the Rangers. I worry about your pitching staff in October (Cliff Lee and pray for rain?), but heck, the Angels staff in ‘02 wasn’t that much better, if at all. Should be some good playoff baseball.
Defending maligned chants since 2009
After a hot tear, Vlad has really worn down since the all-star break. While he did provide a nice presence in the middle of the lineup for the the first-half of the season, I would not be upset if the Rangers didn’t re-sign him next season.
The playoff pitching staff for the Rangers does not actually worry me all the much. After Lee, the Rangers have Colby Lewis and CJ Wilson, both of whom have been very solid this year. I am more worried about the Ranger’s offense, which has been scuffling of late.
Yeah, Vlad is old and slow, and I think his first half resurgence was largely a product of an offseason of getting healthy plus playing in Arlington. I still love watching the guy hit.
Defending maligned chants since 2009
He used to literally golf low pitches out of the park when he played for l’Expos de Montreal.
I remember watching an Expos-Braves game circa 2002 where he literally hit one 460 feet off of his shoelaces.

I’m not really sure what a “scheduling concession” would look like in that scenario. If anyone had a thought on that I’d appreciate it. Keeping a nine-game schedule helps somewhat, but it still cuts the Northwest out of California more than any other plan. If every school in the North is looking for concessions, what’s there to give?
“Surprise! Every time you play USC you get to play @ USC so you can keep recruiting LA” doesn’t sound too great to me. And if this scenario is being used to hold equal revenue sharing hostage… well that’s not great either.
I liked this a lot
Oregon is the conference favorite. Oregon State is a consensus No. 3 pick. USC is No. 2 but ineligible. Expect the Civil War, for a third consecutive season, to decide who goes to the Rose Bowl.

FBSU Question
I see a lot of the pundits are selecting an Oregon v. Boise State game for the Rose Bowl. Does this mean that FBSU goes undefeated again this year or drop a non-conference game? If FBSU goes undefeated, do they play for the national title because they start the season at #3?
What does it take to keep them out of the title game assuming they go undefeated this year? And, bonus question, how much do you/don’t you want a rematch in Pasadena with the Broncos?
It means that a Big Ten team (probably Ohio State)
Goes undefeated and thus they have to be replaced in the Rose by a non-Big 10 team.
An undefeated Ohio State would, without a doubt, rank about an undefeated FBSU on the computer if not the human polls.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
That scenario probably predicts an Alabama v. Ohio State NC game.

Yep,
That is what makes Alabama so intriguing this season. Their offense might actually be good this season (even with all-world caliber talent in Mark Ingram, Julio Jones, Marquis Maze, Trent Richardson, and a good O-line, they will find a way to put far fewer points on the board than they should), but most of us are assuming that Saban will be able to overcome the losses on defense without too much trouble.

1. What time about will the ATQ tailgate on saturday be underway?
2. Where do you think College Gameday goes this week? All signs point to LSU-UNC or TCU-OSU

I’ve been to Houston a few times I actually rather like it there. Out of DFW, San Antonia, El Paso and Houston – I’ll take Houston every time. It is diverse, and I never had any food there I’d call “fantastic”, but it’s a busy place.
WIth that said, Darron Thomas’ grammar is just as good, or better than, most of the Houston area people I’ve had contact with. And on the plus, his drawl isn’t so THICK that it makes him difficult to understand, unlike most of the Houston area people I’ve had contact with.
No disrespect to Houston intended. It’s a fine city. But the people I’ve met, clearly don’t care about proper grammar. You have to understand what they meant, not what they say.

Talk about far afield…
Anyway, the Salvadoran food there is wonderful, great Venezuela, Vietnamese, Indian, basically any kind of ethnic food you could want from Latin America or Asia. I’ve heard the high end restaurants are really great too because of all the oil money, but I don’t really know anything about that.
To be fair, I only stayed in Houston for a night.
I didn’t get to experience it on any level other than ‘Jesus, it’s hot and looks shitty here.’

I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but hear me out.
I just want to know why this kind of thing keeps coming out of you every few months or so. Is it intentional and to draw attention to your blog? Are you trying to create a shtick for yourself that everyone comes to you for? Or are you just having trouble distinguishing what is acceptable to post?
These are sincere questions, because I’d like for you to succeed as a writer. Depending on your reasons, you could improve by letting out your thought process and taking the lumps along the way.
My yoke is heavy.
That's a good question and I appreciate the sincerity.
I’ve been thinking about that myself and I think it’s a combination of the last two things.
I’m still trying to find my niche. Yes, I want to be funny/witty/humorous because I think it offers a different take that better suits students/my voice and offers a respite from traditional cut and dry writing, but on the other hand, I don’t want to lose credibility from when I post things that I want taken seriously. I realize I probably can’t have both. I love Deadspin and The Big Lead so sometimes I want to incorporate things they do, but my audience isn’t as accepting of their crudeness and I can only learn from what’s right/wrong by trial and error.
That said, my judgement could be much better. I’m still 20. My sense of humor can be pretty immature, and sometimes I forget that my blog is be read by hundreds of people that very well might have different tastes than me. I’m still learning. I think you propose a great idea of running by posts to someone who I consider level-headed to make sure it’s appropriate before I post. Being my own editor definitely offers some setbacks.
I really don’t intend to insult or offend anyone. I’m trying to find my voice and sharpen my judgement, and I’m definitely taking my lumps along the way. Any advice or insight you guys have would be highly appreciated.

I guess the only advice I can give
While you may love sites like Deadspin and TheBigLead, you have to realize 99% of the writers in the world can’t do what they do. It takes a serious talent to be able to write in that style (old Deadspin, not new Deadspin. Leitch was better).
Spencer Hall of EDSBS is an example I keep bringing up. It may seem like it’s easy reading through his work, but nobody has the talent and voice that he does.
Unless you’re really sure you can pull off that kind of tone and post — and I mean really, really sure — I wouldn’t suggest doing it. Stick to what you’re good at and go with it. If you hone that craft, people will notice.
I agree with Brian here
thing is, you have to be honest and be yourself. Part of our success is that we’ve never tried to be something we’re not. And there have been times where I have read your stuff and felt that it wasn’t sincere. It may not always be flashy or funny (and God knows I’m not funny), but if you try too hard to put forth a certain persona, its not going to work.

Brian makes a very good point
And so do you Dave. Could you maybe give me a couple examples of stuff you’ve like and stuff you haven’t liked? Feedback is much appreciated.

Watching Lache run in a sumo suit is a sight to behold.
it’s spelled "S-H-U-F-E-L-T-A-L-L-W-A-R-M-A-N-D-F-U-Z-Z-Y"
Nooooo!
I cant watch it, due to “incorrect parameters” on youtube (whatever the heck that even means is beyond me)
Self-anointed President of the Kenjon Barner fan club.
That was hilarious.
I cracked up when I saw one player chase the ball down into the goal and dive to the ground to head it in. Everything’s hilarious in a sumo suit.
My yoke is heavy.
It’s all fun and games in the O games until somebody gets hurt.
But seriously, I think the O games are hilarious. I love the fact that Kelly does this each year. You get to see some of the funny personalities of the players.
Hey Daisy, git me anudder one!

I loved Kenjon saying “Come on now, it’s the twelfth round. Time to beat his ass.”

Wow,
He would still destroy me in a Lache in a sumo suit vs. CaDuck in running clothes race. I dont have a damn quick twitch muscle fiber in my body!
Seriously though, he looked surprisingly quick in a sumo suit.
Self-anointed President of the Kenjon Barner fan club.
CK cracked me up today. Asked if there was some risk of Barner getting tired from "carrying the ball too much."
His reply, “(NO), a football doesn’t weigh much.”
"If you can't copy 'em, don't imitate ''em."

Interesting.....
Prehmmr I am told the Ducks are close to adding two BB players who will be 1-for-1 players. Both graduated and will transfer and play right away.

I would have to guess this is just an attempt to get some more bodies on the bench rather than getting players who will have a significant impact, right?
I don’t know if I could ever cheer for him.

He's been looking for school and wanted to be closer to home
And he was denied entrance to Louisville a few days ago because of some rule I don’t understand.
yep
and if he comes here, he’s an instant starter.

Reminder for all (because I almost forgot.)
The fantasy draft for the ATQ league is tonight, at 6:30 PST. I dunno whether we should open up a fanpost for smack talk, or what.
Q: How come Oregon State players haven't gotten in trouble for stealing anything from a frat house?

Welcome to the club, Cody Ross. You can stay at my house.
Hadn't even crossed my mind today
and I probably have a concussion from taking a paintball to the temple from 10 feet this afternoon. Nah no fanpost during the draft, however we should have one with some mini recap afterwards.

I hate being first, second, ninth or tenth in Snake draft.
Too much waiting. I get antsy and make a really bad decision that makes sense at the time.

Screw you. I <3 Eric Crouch. One of the best option QBs ever. Oh, and Scott Frost would like a word with you in his office.
I don't deal in hyperbole.
Um, can I take one for the team and have that meeting with Frost instead? I mean, just to help the high schooler out…no ulterior motive.

Could we be adding a Wide Receiver?
DuckFootball RT @eDuckCCourtney: RT @BrandonHuffman Hearing that Oregon could be where former Inglewood (Calif.) receiver Shaq Evans is headed, after leaving Notre Dame…
@prehmmr Per a source close to Shaq Evans the receiver hasn’t officially left ND but it will come and right now no school is officially leading.
We did offer the kid out of HS, and here’s his Notre Dame profile.

Ok, just because we offered a kid while he was in high school doesn’t mean that we’re pursuing him, or if he’s even interested in us.

that LaMichael James is a vampire? His canines are like twice as long as the rest of his teeth and pointy as hell. I don’t quite get how he’s able to play day games, but it’s gotten to the point that I’m no longer surprised by the things he can do.

Well, they also seem to think we’ll be wearing green uniforms. I mean, with all the combinations possible, that’s almost as silly as thinking that Kenjon Barner isn’t going to score more than 17 points on them IN THE FIRST QUARTER.
