Darron Thomas Video Highlights
Like many of you, I was mildly suprised to hear Thomas getting the nod to start 2010. His body of work so far has been limited...so just for kicks I thought I would revisit some of his feats. Just in case you forgot, check out these...

He has very nice touch on his deep passes.

I’m really curious to see how fast he looks in real game action. His speed in that one Spring Game scramble looked impressive, but it’s so hard to tell when the defense isn’t really flying around.
In practice his speed on scrambles in particular looked great.
I think scrambles are his strength in terms of running because whenever a quarterback scrambles there is about a one second buffer for the defense to realize what’s happening and react. Thomas’ long legs seem to hinder his acceleration but help his top speed. Thus, I hypothesize that Thomas on scrambles is much faster than Thomas off a zone read because he’s protected by the defense’s slower reaction time.

Sounds like any mobile QB that ever lived tbh, slower reaction time always helps with speed.

Not necessarily. Masoli, for example, had short legs and thus could accelerate extremely quickly.
My yoke is heavy.
Some guys just look faster than others when they are in real game situations. Dixon always had that ability to get to the sidelines faster than anyone else on the field. Masoli had a burst and sheer determination to get downfield even when it wasn’t a good idea. I just wonder what kind of runner Thomas is, and what we’ll see from him. Will he charge up the middle, or scamper out of bounds? Is he going to slide, or lower his shoulder? Does he have the speed to get around the corner on the zone read? And just what can he do once he gets in space?
I know Thomas is athletic, and that Chip Kelly trusts him, but I don’t know what kind of QB he’s going to be.
he sure as heck won't be lowering his shoulder

Masoli had big thigh flexor muscles, which is the primary muscle group that helps with acceleration. It isn’t so much the length of the legs that determines the acceleration (Ref: Terrelle Pryor at 6’-6", Bryon Leftwich at 6’-5"), though it does have SOME impact. They do travel a shorter distance, after all, but this is offset by not getting as much distance for each repetition as a longer stride will give.

That is the more elaborate explanation, for sure.
Masoli clearly was a stocky guy with a lot of muscle packed into his legs and arms and stomach. My point about acceleration was more just simple logistically. Two shorter, thicker legs generally pound into the ground quicker than two long, rangy legs.
I’m just trying to reason why Thomas isn’t faster off the reads, and this is my useless conjecture.
My yoke is heavy.
Not that I make a habit of looking at other dude’s thighs, but they tell a lot about them as a runner.
But yeah, I think you’re (Maybe indirectly, but still) right. It could also be comfort level and trusting his own reaction time. Maybe he doesn’t have great vision as a runner, but I think it’s just that his legs are built for top speed (Which involves the muscles of entire leg), and his gear ratio doesn’t favor acceleration.

Masoli had really nice legs, I like a man with a little meat on him.
Thomas, not sure, maybe I will learn to be attracted to him over time.

My only concern
Is that during the spring game, Thomas seemed to be throwing into heavy traffic most of the time (this being the most recent footage of Thomas I’ve seen.) Is this something that concerns anyone else?
Is this Saturday New Mexico's first National Championship??
Is it bad that I was thinking of how Jaison Williams caught 2 passes in one game?

I have been trying for a long time to find Darron Thomas high school video,
But I have had no luck. Anyone else seen some?

That’s not our Darron Thomas.

I hope Darron (the real one) has those Nike lawyers on speed dial.

That's not him, those highlights are timestamped 2008. He was on our team in 2008.
Unless he’s two-timing us and playing on multiple teams at once, to which I say “Screw him, Nate wouldn’t have done that to us.”
