ATQ PODCAST: Special Guest Rule of Tree
This is no ordinary week, and a game of such magnitude calls for something special. So we have a special guest joining us on the podcast this week, Scott Allen from SBN's new Stanford blog Rule of Tree. Scott gives us a great primer on the Cardinal, and has all the information you need to know for this week's big game. In addition, Tako and I talk about the ASU game, take a look around the Pac-10, and ponder why our opponents seem to have a habit of getting injured right as our offense is building momentum.
As always, you can listen using the widget below, or download directly here. Also, check out the ATQ page on talkshoe for more options or to subscribe

One thing I forgot to mention in the podcast
The Ducks have to get more efficient on 1st and 2nd down. We went 2-13 on 3rd down, but 12 of those were 3rd and 7+ yards. 3rd downs are fine, as long as they’re 3rd and 3, or 3rd and 1.

I'm still regretting my decision NOT to do all my podcast appearances in a British accent
just to throw everybody off.

One of the things you guys talked about
was the reads of Thomas and the play of the offensive line. Couple of points on this:
1. In re-watching the game, I didn’t see a lot of times that Thomas made bad reads (there were a couple, but who knows if they weren’t designed hand-offs). What I noticed ASU doing was keeping their DE home and making Thomas hand the ball off and then using Burfict to go after LMJ. In fact the one time I really caught Burfict looking into the backfield was on LMJ’s long TD run. It’s looked like Burfict had his feet stuck in mud. They also used the safety to spy on Thomas to allow the d-line to pursue the ball. This is why the zone read play action with Thomas was so effective, because the safety was staring at Thomas and not paying attention to WRs over the middle (watch the Paulson long pass again, you’ll see it there).
2. I’m conflicted on what happened to the o-line. My excuses come from the fact that these are 300lb guys playing fast in 100 degree heat, late at night. Not a good recipe for execution. What confuses me is why I didn’t see more (or any for that matter) power run formations to let the o-line get to the second level and get a hat on Burfict or the LBs. Was this Kelly not tipping his hand to Stanford? Was this a product of Kelly playing it safe because the guys were tired? Or was this ASU just being too fast at the LB position for us to be able to execute it properly? Really confused on why the o-line seemed so out of sorts. Thank god that’s the last 100 degree game.
Hey Daisy, git me anudder one!

This was my impression, but without rewatching the game, I didn’t make a comment on it.
It does open up some other questions though.
Does Chip Kelly ask Thomas to start making defensive tackle reads, which could potentiality have him run down the middle? It would open up the playbook, and cause them to rethink their strategy, but – you also get your young QB running down the middle of defenses, where safeties and LBs are going to headhunt. (We could do it with Masoli)
it’s spelled "S-H-U-F-E-L-T-L-I-K-E-P-I-C-K-I-N-G-Y-O-U-R-N-O-S-E"
I think we have to start putting a bit more of the game on DT's arm
The plays to His name is David Paulson and Huff are great examples of making the D pay for loading up on the zone read. The more we attack the openings through the air the more our offense will flow. I would love to see a bit more in the middle range of the passing game too. The short passing game was effective and the long throws were rewarding this week, but lets see some intermediate routes to keep the defense honest. So basically I want DT to grow up right now. Eh, it could happen right?
Go Ducks.....Ducks Go!!!!!
He'll make those throws as soon as Maehl starts catching them
(kidding Musgrave, put away the pitchfork).
But seriously, I think Kelly is bringing DT along nicely and at the same time not showing the entire playbook just yet to teams he doesn’t need to. You know Kelly is going to have a lot more for the Furd than he’s shown now (two back sets, more options off the read, lots more play action and screens). DT is being effective if not yet being efficient.
For all the hype that Andrew *uck is getting his numbers are impressive, but then again so are Thomas’

wow closer than I would have guessed
DT should turn out to be a very good QB in our system.

stream of the game
Does anyone have a copy of the game or know of a place that has it up to stream? Usually goducks.tv has been posting them but this week (maybe because it was a fox game) they haven’t got it up.
This would be interesting.
What ever happened to Around the Horn on instant messager, that was pretty entertaining. But i would do this if everyone else wanted to as well. I’m not even close to as knowledgeable as some of the other users on ATQ though…

As much of a good idea it sounds to us high schoolers to have a shot at the big time,
I think we’ve proven time and time again that our opinions, even if they are right, aren’t necessarily backed up with defensible points. Which would turn into a boring podcast, when no one can give enough reasons to back up their claims.
