My .02 from the game

We have two all-pac 10 caliber running backs

Darron Thomas will be just fine managing the games, but he still has an “over throw” issue

Our defense is outstanding

Cliff Harris is our new punt returner

Unsung-hero of the day: Eric Solis. Dude can KICK.

Soooo Katz is essentially Cade McNown...

I’ve noticed that they have him simply chuck it up in the air and hope his receivers can get it. Just like Bob Toledo used to do with McNown.

I was kind of thinking that early today.

That while you don’t Thomas to get hurt or run up the score, you need to get him as much experience as possible before the Tennessee game.

But as the day wore on, I decided it wouldn’t matter. This game was like a glorified scrimmage. New Mexico was no test at all. I would have preferred an opponent like Houston or Fresno State as a preparation game. Those are good mid-level opponents that we can get a win over but will actually give our young quarterback some pressure and experience in dealing with pressure.

My yoke is heavy.

UNC players are officially dumb.

Suspended defensive tackle Marvin Austin is in the stands here at the Georgia Dome. He’s not the only one.

The Raleigh News & Observer has reported that most of the 13 players who were held out of this game are in attendance.

UNC officials can’t be happy with this decision. It only raises more questions: How did they get here? How did they get tickets? Who paid for their flights? The tickets? Hotel? Many of the same questions that brought some of these players under scrutiny to begin with.

BeavOs

So even though that makes them 1 – 13… before October on the road (seriously, when does this become a major concern about Riley?) … I think they played reasonably well on the road in a tough environment… If they follow the typical pattern, how good are they at the end of the season?

by Duckity_Duck on Sep 4, 2010 8:23 PM PDT reply actions

That's the thing, though

How many of those 13 losses have they played well only to lose on completely avoidable mistakes. I’m not sure what the answer is, but a certain game involving missed extra points comes to mind. At some point, that’s gotta fall on the coach. Is he preparing them enough for the pressure?

On the other hand, OSU has scheduled really dang tough non-conf road games.

They are tough games...

but not all of them… and it is still 1-13… So yes, Riley gets a lot out of under the radar players. However, it takes him too long to do it. If you can’t get your players ready in time for the season through spring and fall camp then you are not doing your job.

I’m just surprised how little of ‘Quizz we saw. He rushed 18 times, and James rushed twice, while Katz put the ball in the air 25 times. I would have expected a much stronger run game, both inside and out, instead of putting the whole game on your young QB’s foot arm.

Here's why I love ESPN comments:

Quoting from the ESPN gamethread on the Kansas / NDSU game here, from before kickoff:

you guys have got to be joking. you are an fcs team that went 3-8 last year and lost most of your key players, on the road at an FBS school. you are going to get beat bad. inexperienced FCS teams dont beat FBS teams, especially BCS conference teams. sometimes experienced FCS teams play very well and catch an FBS group off guard, and by the way, APP State was a dominant FCS team, not a 3-8 group. same with Richmond last year. Ive got no ill will against you guys and hope you have a successful season in FCS, but lets get real here kids. This one will be a blowout. I will go 42-7

Same guy, later on:

YOU ARENT EVEN IN THE SAME NCAA DIVISION AS US! We return every starter from our offensive line, and TG wsa 20-30 taking over a program that had won 5 games in 4 yrs. when he got there. 3-8 is 3-8, it was against FCS competition. Blowout. Big. I will be the one on here after the game making sure you all know about it.

You know what’s really weird? That guy didn’t come back to talk about the game like he promised!

but lets just say if I ever have a daughter, she won’t be a cheerleader. I don’t generally find them attractive because I associate flaunting your body in that was with not having a whole lot else to offer. I realize that its a stereotype, and it may not be completely fair, but it turns me off of cheerleaders. I will not comment further.

Both are also leered at and objectified by men. Not the cheerleader’s fault (some of the time), but not something I’d desire for my daughter either.

I agree with that. Back in the 70’s, the Oregon Country Fair was a showcase of nudity and drugs and I dont recall a single incident of a woman being hassled, but they werent inviting eroticism either. Same thing at Cougar hot springs or the stream near oakridge we used to skinny dip at, the name I cant remember.

Yes dancing is evil...

They don’t pick their uniforms nor the popular styles of dance of the day. This thread did not start because a cheerleader was feeling objectified. It started because somebody said he associates flaunting your body (as if that is all they are doing) with having little else to offer and becoming a cheerleader meaning you don’t respect yourself…

by Duckity_Duck on Sep 4, 2010 9:33 PM PDT up reply actions

You’re right, I said dancing was evil. Way to make that jump. I don’t really know that that style of dancing has a whole lot of place at a college football game attended by a lot of young kids, but whatevs. As for the uniforms? Choosing to be a cheerleader means choosing to put on the uniform. Same as working at Taco Bell or whatever. And yes, the dance team is basically just flaunting their bodies. Cheering? Not so much.

by lovemyducks81 on Sep 4, 2010 9:37 PM PDT up reply actions

I didn't say you said dancing was evil...

It was me adding on to what you were saying with sarcasm… The dance team is dancing for heck’s sake not just flaunting their bodies, and yes, if you want to be a cheerleader you have to put on the uniform. In other words for some women… It might just be the price they pay to do something they love.

by Duckity_Duck on Sep 4, 2010 9:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Also...

who are you to determine that they are not cheering? I see them cheering ALL the time when they are not performing a routine.

by Duckity_Duck on Sep 4, 2010 9:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Um…I’m a season ticket holder who sits next to where they spend most of the game? The stunt team cheers. The dance team dances. Which is their role, but I’m not a huge fan. You obviously are, so enjoy. I don’t really care that much.

I can’t judge anything in a game against Tennessee-Martin, a team that went 5-6 in the Ohio Valley Conference last year, and lost most of their starters….however, I think Simms is going to be largely incompetent. Tennessee was the only school that offered him out of JUCO. He seemed pretty inconsistent.

Tennessee’s O-Line and D-Line dominated tonight, but it was UT-Martin.

So what can we expect...

from Tennessee since you watched the game?

by Duckity_Duck on Sep 4, 2010 9:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Expect them to try to run the ball on us and only pass in situations where it’s a necessity…expect them to have a decent scheme against our offense. I don’t know how effective that scheme will be, though, considering the fact that they are very inexperienced and shallow depth-wise pretty much everywhere on defense.

Eh….I fully expect for him to make a few mistakes, possibly throw 1 or 2 interceptions, and maybe have a little bit of trouble handling the crowd noise at first. Honestly though, I don’t think we’ll need him to throw the ball TOO much. Just make smart decisions running the zone read and throw the ball when necessary.

Not sure...

I think you’re asking the right question which is what I was alluding to. He said it best after the game, “I have to get better.” I’m not sure it has a lot to do with rust as TQA was saying because he is coming off fall camp and more of live action jitters as you are saying. Nevertheless, I think we all noticed he was not crisp in his first game.

by Duckity_Duck on Sep 4, 2010 10:08 PM PDT up reply actions

He may not have had a great rhythm,

But he was able to operate the offense at an absurd pace. Quite a few UNM defenders had their hands on their hips halfway through the first drive.

So long as he can keep getting snaps off quickly, the opposing defense will inevitably make some big mistakes.

We were up 59-0 at the half and that included two punt returns.

We can’t help it if NM’s defense can’t stop a straight ahead run.

I didn’t see who actually got them, but how many games from today fit either of those criteria? I guess there were several close ones that shouldn’t have been, but…OSU-TCU is the only one I can think of that fits the bill. The rest of the close ones really shouldn’t have been so close…

Kenjon Barner, Oregon: With starting running back LaMichael James suspended, Barner accounted four five touchdowns in the Ducks 72-0 stomping of New Mexico. He rushed for 147 yards on 17 carries — 8.6 yards per rush — and turned a short pass into a 60-yard TD.

I muted Joey G by the end of the first

And turned on the radio, which was oddly BEHIND the TV broadcast (since its almost always ahead). Even with the delay on the call, it was still much better.

So funniest moment of the day for me in many ways

Was Jerry Allen getting slightly flustered in the second half because a lot of players who were duplicate numbers of others on the roster were playing and he didn’t know whom they were.

Interesting note from Moseley’s Twitter: “Watching the replay. Thomas’ early interception was due to a rare blown assignment by Paulson. Missed a block of the guy who made the pick.”

by inroywetrust on Sep 5, 2010 12:20 AM PDT reply actions

And the argument as to whose fault the interception was goes to axemen23.

I had thought it was a mistake by Thomas to throw it blindly to the opposite side of the field without seeing the defender. I’m still made nervous by how quick and seemingly mechanical that play’s design is. But Will was right, it was on Paulson to make that block.

My yoke is heavy.

Ok this is starting to go too far. In the past week axemen has changed his mind when he started an argument, admitted quickly he was wrong when proven to be instead of blindly sticking to his guns, and now he’s nailing it. I don’t know how I feel about axemen23.0 but I’m leaning toward not liking it.

You guys are so gullible

You know axemen emailed Moseley and said, "Hey Rob, remember me? We met that one time. Anyway, can you do me a favor and late at night tweet that it was Paulson’s fault for Thomas’ INT? It would really help me out. Thanks.

P.S. Don’t worry, I’ll pay you again just like last time"

Anytime that a QB is supposed to throw the ball across the field without going through any sort of progressions makes me nervous.

by CaDuck on Sep 5, 2010 10:09 AM PDT up reply actions

It does make me nervous too

A defense could feasibly scheme to fake the QB out and get that throw to the supposedly “clear” side. It’s my belief though that as long as you didn’t have like 4 DBs on the second side, all you have to do is chip the CB and at worst its caught for a 1 or 2 yard loss.
