ATQ Podcast: Post-New Mexico Edition

The ATQ Podcast is back for another week.  This week, I'm joined by jtlight and dvieira.  In this episode, we delve into the New Mexico game, with special emphasis on Darron Thomas' performance and how LaMichael and Kenjon will work together in the offense, and a quick primer on the Tennessee game.  This one goes about 48 minutes, so it seems like the majority who were in favor of longer podcasts have won out.

Please note that the link for downloading and subscribing has changed.  New link here.  This will be the link for the entire season.

As I said last week, we're still learning this, so feedback is greatly appreciated.

Good work, guys. I enjoyed it.

In both of these so far, the main thing I’ve noticed is that it gets smoother throughout. It starts pretty choppy, long pauses, guys interrupting, etc., but then you get your rhythm about 15 minutes in and it sounds really good. Thanks for putting this together.

One thing you guys talked about is Remene as the 3rd string back

while I agree there is reason to be concerned if either James or Barner go down long term, don’t forget that Hawkins is there to step in if needed. I was pleasantly surprised by Hawkins on the field and his versatility at many positions.

Another point on the secondary and out of position plays...

I re-watched the game yesterday and something that stuck out to me was early on there was some miscommunication between Pleasant and Boyett. A couple of series in they made an adjustment and Boyett was playing a lot closer to the line and Pleasant was playing a lot deeper plus the communication and adjustments at the LOS were much more apparent across the secondary.

You can tell that the coaching staff saw what was going on and quickly made the right changes. These guys are definitely going to make mistakes, but their ability to adjust and adapt will be huge this year.

at first yes

but when UNM went into obvious passing downs Pleasant moved back and Boyett moved up. I think some of it had to do with how the LBs were blitzing (I need to look again). But when Aliotti brought an extra LB, Pleasant was closer to the line. But when Oregon brought 3 or only 4 Boyett was in that mid range and Pleasant was in the deeper safety position (I think this has a lot to do with Boyett’s coverage ability).

Also, Matthews saved the WR with his INT in that game. If you watch, when Matthews picks off the pass, Eddie is right there ready to lay the wood. If the WR had actually caught that pass across the middle I’d be afraid that he’d still be drinking thru a straw.

Really? That puzzles me. Why do you think that would be the case? It seems Boyett’s ability to cover the middle and/or support the CBs would be valuable while Pleasant’s LB instincts on short passes or flare routes would have been highlighted in the opposite fashion.

I’m guessing they decided Pleasant is able to cover more ground for the pass and close in if it is a run?

I don’t think Pleasant has enough experience covering intermediate routes at this time. Plus, Boyett is a ball hawk in coverage and as Shu says Pleasant’s able to cover more ground.

Also, from a coaching perspective it gives Pleasant an opportunity to in a real game, watch a play develop in front of him (something he’s never done).

I did notice though that Pleasant moved closer to the line on LB blitzes because of his natural ability to cover short passes and flare routes. Those times, Boyett was in the intermediate to long and the corners were playing pretty soft to not get burnt deep.

This back and forth between Pleasant and Boyett is going to be something I’m going to keep an eye on this year. I love the way those two guys have the ability to play off each other.

podcast

Hi guys!

Thanks for the website and the podcast. I enjoy both. One thing though, Oregon had a great opening week, actually the best opening day that I can ever remember (im 37), without question. No other opening day comes close, in the amount of positive things to take from a game. So why don’t you guys sound happy?

Not one of you sounded grateful to be able to witness our team preforming at such high level.

SMILE. THINGS ARE GREAT! =)

Keep up the good work! GO DUCKS!

just a reminder

when we went to the Rose Bowl in the 90’s, we began the season by losing to Utah AND Hawaii. Not just losing, but we got our butt’s thoroughly kicked (right out of Autzen by Hawaii) when both of those teams were mediocre at best. But we still went to the Rose Bowl………

So let’s re-reflect on this years 72 POINT VICTORY over New Mexico. Positive thoughts! Positive thoughts! Happy, happy, Joy, joy!

oh, we're happy

we played great. We just know we played a bad team. So we don’t want to go out and say we’re the greatest thing since slice bread until we do this to a real team. I have all the confidence in the world that we’ll do just that on Saturday.

Yeah!

I’m no longer in boycott mode because Tako gave MCD at least a few hundred kegs in the fanshot.

Dave,

Awesome job, once again. For only the second podcast, these things are really coming together.

I have one request, and I don’t even know if you have any control over this — when I download the podcast via the RSS feed, it appears on my computer with no ID3 tag (no artist, no title, etc.). This certainly isn’t a huge problem, by any means, and it’s easy enough for me to just fix by myself each time, but is there an easy way to incorporate that? Again, I fully recognize that you may well not have any control over that because you’re deploying them through TalkShoe.

If it’s not easy to do, don’t sweat it. Thanks again for putting these together!

Getting hit by Eddie "Pleasant" is likely not as fun as advertised.
