Quack Fix: Barner & Harris honored, Oregon-LSU in 2011 official, Ducks jump in polls

Is it Saturday yet? Here's your Wednesday Morning Quack Fix:

  • If you haven't already, go ahead and circle Sept. 3, 2011 on your calendars now, as Oregon and LSU have agreed to face off in Cowboys Stadium next fall to kick off their respective seasons. As if I wasn't already excited enough for my trip to Knoxville this weekend, I already have another non-conference Ducks game to look forward to for next year.
  • The Ducks are cranking up the heat and the volume this week as they get ready for their debut at Tennessee's raucous Neyland Stadium. Meanwhile, in Knoxville, it appears the word of the week is speed. As in the Ducks are fast, and Matt Simms' and his receiving corps will need to grow up fast.
  • The Ducks jumped four and three spots, respectively, in this week's AP and Coaches' polls, to No. 7 and No. 8.
  • Congratulations to Kenjon Barner and Cliff Harris, who were both named Pac-10 Players of the Week yesterday. Barner was a lock to take home the award, but I wasn't as sure about Harris. Glad he got his due, as both returns were pretty electrifying.
  • And finally, Oregon's very own Duck is one of 16 collegiate mascots featured in the 2010 Capital One Mascot Challenge. Make sure you vote!
  • In other sports, the No. 19 Oregon volleyball team improved to 6-0 with a 3-2 win over Portland State last night. Also of note, both the men and women's cross country teams open the 2010 season in Corvallis on Friday. Both teams are ranked in the nation's preseason top five.

As always, leave any relevant links or comments below.

GO DUCKS!

The more I hear about him (and the more I realize that LMJ and Barner are the real deal), the more I think we dodged a bullet when Bryce Brown picked Tennessee.

You have to wonder though if he would have been granted permission to leave if he would have just been man enough to tell the coach he wanted to transfer. My understanding was that he refused to speak to the coach and just no-showed. I might be reluctant to go for that as well. I really don’t have enough understanding of that situation in particular, I’m more just looking at the overall picture of Bryce Brown so far.

And in the Yell-O corner, with a 2009 conference record of 8 wins, 1 loss...the REIGNING...DEFENDING...UNDISPUTED Champions of the PAC TEN...the Oregon Ducks!

My understanding is that’s what Dooley said, but there are several witnesses that counter that claim, including Bryce, and his father.

According to what Arthur Brown has said before

Bryce Brown did not ask Derek Dooley to his face for a transfer request, but that they did meet. Dooley later confirmed that they did meet but asked Bryce not to mention it — persumably, I’d think, because Bryce didn’t ask for a transfer to his face (that’s my speculation). Dooley’s handling of the situation has a lot of Vol fans confused, but the one fact that does remain is that Brown somewhat behaved like a baby: he simply didn’t show up for the first practice without word, texted Dooley the decision to not come back to Tennessee, and certainly behaved like a baby. Dooley’s shown a very strong desire to strong-arm the media in general, which is (sadly so) somewhat reminiscent of his Sabanism.

Dooley has said that he evaluates transfer requests based on the impact they’d cause to the team and their attitude in asking for one. He didn’t release QB Nick Lamiason from his scholarship, either, and most sources I recall say it was because of his attitude.

Eh

I’m not entirely sure. I’m a vol based in the middle of NC, so I don’t have as good a hand on the pulse of Knoxville-knowledge, but my impression is that it’s a mixture of his indecisiveness, childishness, and a want to do what’s best for his family. I don’t think Bryce is this horrid guy and I wish he was still at Tennessee — if we was at Tennessee 100%. I do think Arthur Brown handles Bryce’s business far more than the parent of a College Student should.

Yeah, I just don’t get it. What does Dooley hope to gain by stringing the kid along. I understand wanting your guys to have character, and integrity, but if the problem is that he lacks it, wouldn’t it make sense to cut ties at that point? It appears to be vindictive in some way, and could backfire in the PR battle that a risky hire like Dooley faces in a year or two if things don’t improve with the program.

I sort of agree,

I know very little about what actually happened. But from my understanding, Bryce Brown just sort of left, and asked for a release from his scholarship over the phone. For some reason Dooley felt the need to talk to him face to face, and refused to release him until that happened. Strange. Both sides were definitely being irrational…

I’ve already been accused of being Admiral Akbar regarding the Tennessee game but I have concerns about how big they are on the offensive side of the ball. I understand that there is no comparison between them and Stanford w/ Gerhart but I don’t like their size advantage at all. If they specialize in ball control (and it sounds like that will be the gameplan), could we run into some similar problems as we did last year?

Also remember that our offense was extremely sloppy and inconsistent the entire first half. It wasn’t just that they controlled the line of scrimmage or that Luck was on fire – if the offense was better in the first half, the Ducks win that game.

the RB

Is a Junior (Might be a fourth-year one, I’m not gonna look it up) and was very highly regarded coming out of HS. He’s shown nothing but very, very good play when he’s been on the field. And Tennessee has a history of meshing lines together. The last time I recall us replacing all the starters we allowed like 5 sacks all year and won the SEC East. We also won all our big home games that year. ;-)

Go Ducks.....Ducks Go!!!!!

by trumpetduck on Sep 8, 2010 9:50 AM PDT up reply actions

Good RBs certainly

But, I think, a different style of RB. The Pac-10 is a league full of zoning, agility, spreading the field (moreso than the SEC, to clarify) and the general Pac-10 RB isn’t going to run you over. It might ignorance on my part, but really I think Toby Gerhart is the only Pac-10 Running Back I can remember who’d sooner knock you down than try to shift around you.

And, all respects to Gerhart, who I think should have won the Heisman last year, but I think Tauren Poole has as much talent as just about anybody. How well he uses that talent is yet to be seen, but I think Poole will be a high-round draft pick when it’s all said and done. Tennessee has a habit of that.

You're correct about Gerhart

He was the only back of his kind that we faced last year, and we struggled with him. Part of the struggle, though, was that Stanford’s QB Andrew Luck was throwing frigging lasers all day. Which opened up our front seven enough for Gerhart to have a field day.

You’re also correct that he deserved the Heisman.

LMJ should get more rushes than Barner.

I would guess that LMJ gets around 20 to 25 touches on offense. LMJ is without question, our “starting” back (even though Coach Kelly claims that James and Kenjon are 1a and 1b).

tough to create demand when your minor league stadium hold 19K. Also tough to get people to go on weeknights when there is nowhere to park in the vicinity.

The thing though, is that the “new/better stadium” was going to be relatively cheap to the city. There was a pretty freaking great plan in place to make it happen.

If they had 2 brains about it, they would have made a smaller stadium, with the plans/possibility to expand for an MLB team in the future.

Wes Rucker thinks DE Malik Jackson (former USC player) is an idiot with all those quotes from yesterday. thinks its pretty funny someone from USC, who got blown out by us, is saying anything. Did Malik Jackson even play against us last year?

on a related note, did Byron Hout change his name to Malik Jackson?

Rucker is still fascinated that we can simulate temperature and humidity in the Mo Center for practice. thankfully, it’s a late kick-off and the temp will fall drastically from 1st to 2nd half.

I love the part about running "BS stuff"

Apparently if your running game works, and you have a QB that can run too, it is total BS.

Yeah, the part about "BS stuff"

Is what happens when someone decides to post only two tweets out of a hundred. What Malik Johnson meant was that Oregon runs a lot of shenannigans on Offense, things that aren’t part of a traditional offenses arsenal.

I wouldn't even say that we run shenanigans.

Presby’s play against Wake Forest was an example of shenanigans. We run option football and simple draw plays, we just run them realy fast.

The Ohio State fans made me bang my head against a hard surface. One of them told my husband “There’s only ONE way to play this game, son”. Presumably it was NOT the ‘new fangled, gimmicky’ spread option we run.

Knoxville Info

Since we have some UT people on here now, a couple of questions for us visiting Knoxville:

1. Where should we go to watch some games beforehand? What sports bars do you recommend?

2. Parking for the game—I know it is hopeless, but what do people recommend? Downtown?

I actually lived in Knoxville for 3 years, but I’ve spent 3 days there in the last 10 years, so I’ve forgotten a lot.

In terms of the Tennessee game,

I keep going from panicked that we are screwed to confident that we will win. Right now I feel fairly confident we will win. I imagine that we will run the same style of defense that we ran in the Rose Bowl, and do everything to shut down the run (with the exception of Stanford last year, we were great in this regard). If Darron Thomas plays a smart game (not necessarily a great one), and can consistently complete passes ( Masoli’s poor passing performance doomed us in the Rose Bowl IMO), we should be able to win this!

Well,

I did it the day before the New Mexico game last week, and it worked freaking brilliantly. Messina went down with a minor injury that was not serious at all. I figure that I hope to play off of the success of last week and throw one on up Thursday or Friday.

The question is, Who goes up as my image? Tennessee’s power runningback, their QB Simms, or some other candidate.

If there was one coach I'd want to jinx it's Wilcox

Sure I’d love the pain to go to Stoops, or the misfortune to Sark. But Foles and Locker are going to require that spot in both those games. Wilcox is the one coach I want to see make bad calls all day.

Plus, this is an SEC road game, what better time to redeem yourself then an OOC road game which started this whole jinx thing in the first place… and Wilcox was involved in that one too. Comes full circle.
