Oregon 68, USC 62: Ducks Open Matthew Knight Arena in Style
What a great way to open the new arena. I guess Oregon was just waiting for a packed arena, new digs and a sparkling new house before they decided to start making shots. Five players were in double figures and Oregon used good ball movement, constant defense on USC's number one threat, Vucevic, and a second half run that put them up by as much as 20 to hold off the Trojans. The Ducks ended up shooting over 42% from the field, and after starting slow from three, ended up hitting 7 of 13 from 3 at one point and pushing the lead to a spot that even a valiant effort by USC couldn't come back from.
The night started with a nice speech by Uncle Phil about the specialness of the new arena. He introduced a number of the creators of Matthew Knight Arena and a number of the family members that were in attendance, including Matt's two sons. Then we saw the remainder of 30 minute plus opening ceremony that included break dancers, drum circles, flame throwers, Puddles on a high wire and enough Oregon cheerleaders and dance team members to make you want to be there in person.
You'd have to assume that the late start contributed to both teams starting off slow. But 3 minutes into the game Garrett Sim scored the first points in Matt Court history. After quite a bit of back and forth in the first half, Oregon closed with an 11-5 run and a sick Nared follow up dunk to take a 32-26 half time lead.
In the second half, Jonathan Loyd, Tyrone Nared and Teondre Williams sparked a run that put Oregon up 57-37 with 11:25 left in the game. Oregon struggled down the stretch as they don't really have a go to scorer that can create his own shot when the defense clamps down. Finally after a number of missed opportunities by the Trojans, EJ Singler sank a couple of free throws to seal the game for Ducks.
INDIVIDUAL OBSERVATIONS:
Tyrone Nared: Nared was a beast for Oregon off the bench tonight. With Catron out and JJ hobbling around on one leg, Nared was called upon to play big minutes down low for Oregon and responded with 10 points 4 rebounds 1 block and a filthy follow up dunk to end the first half.
Johnathan Loyd: Great game for Loyd. Complete spark plug in the second half to fuel Oregon to that 20 point lead. He was everywhere around the ball collecting 5 rebound and 3 steals. Loyd was a pest to USC's backcourt and hit some clutch 3's to propel Oregon momentum.
Malcolm Armstead: One of the better nights for Armstead in the box score, but the kid just doesn't look right on the floor. At first I chalked it up to not understanding and not being comfortable in Altman's system, but I think it's something completely different. He doesn't have the explosion or quicks that he had last year and he and Jacob look really injured. Jacob looked like he was running on one leg at times. Oregon doesn't have the depth to give these guys the rest they need, but they just don't look 100% and I think it's contributing massively to their play.
E.J. Singler: EJ is struggling from the floor as teams continue to focus on him on the offensive end. EJ shot 1-7 from the night, but continued to play his solid defense and gathered 6 boards and was 7-11 from the charity stripe to help lock down the win.
NEXT UP
The Ducks take on Ucla at 3:00pm on Saturday that squeaked one out at the cow barn today 62-57. Comcast Sports is supposed to be carrying this game.

That picture is just ridiculous.
The pre-game festivities would be over the top for an NBA team in Las Vegas.

Welcome to the club, Cody Ross. You can stay at my house.
It was over the top
But I wouldn’t expect anything else from an opening night of new $250 million dollar arena and the CEO of Nike sitting at half court with his entire extended family.
Thanks 2010 Ducks for a memorable season

Btw what was with the Autzen-like empty seats early in the second half?
Some special reception at halftime or something?

There's a whole arena to explore.

That picture is hilarious, I could not have dreamt it up myself.
Well, ok I could.
What pisses me off is that it doesn’t have any fucking mascots hatching from eggs. I mean, what the fuck are we doing without a new team of mascots hatching from eggs. All over the stadium. Each section should have had it’s own new egg. People would go like, let’s see, section 127, row 22, seat 17… what the fuck, there’s a giant egg in my seat and the five seats next to it? They would stand there a little confused until the lights went down, the green lasers shot on the court, and then… CRRRAAACK. Out of each egg would stream some light and a significant amount of smoke, and a new mascot representing each of the Kilkenny family’s fitness goals, business segments, and sexual fantasies would emerge from each egg. All would be loosely based on a duck, but really more focused on the Kilkennys. From here, they would whip their own section into a cheering frenzy, and everyone would watch this instead of basketball.
Anything less is lame.

Any first take accounts on the atmosphere?
How was the atmosphere? was it at all like Mac court or did it feel almost Autzen like?
Atmosphere when the Ducks played well was great, but it died a couple times in the second half when the team went cold. The section I was in – 101, behind the SC bench – was pretty full of wine-and-cheese types. They didn’t do the fight song, didn’t do the Go — Ducks thing…actually many of them spent a lot of time waving to friends on the other side of the arena. I think there will be nights when the crowd is smaller but more rowdy.
Cal Bears football... Doing less with more since 2002.
One thing that worries me. What’s this place going to be like when it’s half full? At least when Mac was sparsely attended, the fans that were there were right on top of the court and could still raise a bit of a ruckus. My worry is that some of this will be dispersed by the new design.
Oregon Ducks. Undefeated during regular season vs SEC since 1977.
they can curtain off the upper sections
which shrinks the capacity to like 7000. This is what they’ll do for volleyball and womens basketball, and what I’d imagine they’ll do if the men are playing, say, Idaho State and a sellout is not expected.

There were 2 or 3 times
when SC was inbounding from the Ducks courtside. The bleachers I was standing on started to rumble, and I got that familiar Autzen ringing in my ears. The audience actually stood up and rocked the house something fierce.

BUT DID THE BILLBOARD SHAKE??
Maybe Phil came up with a way to make the billboard shake on demand through some high-tech machinery.

Anyone got a pic of the mid-court "line"?
Want to show someone it exists.

This might be a problem
Surprised the NCAA hasn’t said something to us about this. Oh well, the court design is not nearly as bad as I first thought, looks decent on TV.

I'll bet they put a green line down midcourt by the end of the month

Place is unreal, took tons of pics, oh, and I guess we were just hiding a competent shooting team until tonight.
1-4! 1-4! Dave was wrong! HaHaHa!

We shot 43% and didnt' make a FG the last 9 minutes and won
Not exactly good shooting but certainly good enough. Not going to complain about the results.

I'd love to know where the team from the first 30 minutes went though
cause they were pretty good, including excellent shot selection

goducks say 2pm on CSN
ESPN says 3pm and my cable box stills says no game on TV. So I’m not really sure at this point. I’d probably agree with you and trust goducks right now.

There's a Blazer game on CSN Saturday night

An amazing night.
From start to finish, this was one of the best Duck events I’ve ever attended. Very well done. Great speech by Uncle Phil. On The Rocks was fantastic. I took my father as a Christmas gift hoping it would be an unforgettable experience. Pretty much right on.
That was definitely the pick-me-up I needed after Monday’s letdown.

Only a title can, but it certainly helps.

Breakdancers
Did anyone check the breakdancers?
I was working and didnt attend. But my little brother got to perform as a break dancer during some part of the opening ceremony or something. Love that he got to take part in the opening of what will become a historic part of the UO sports program and tradition.
Also, If anyone happened to get video of any of the breakdancing, I’d love to see it.

"How DOES anybody stop you guys?!?!"
Me: Uhhhhhhh. er, well...
Go Ducks!
Was he the dude that was spinning around on his head at one point? That’s the only guy I recall breakdancing (pretty damn impressive too), think he came out while the cheerleaders were doing a routine…lucky him.
hmm. I don't think that is actually him.
He does a lot more acrobatic power moves. One-handed jumping handstands and such.
He is definitely one of the guys at 4:46 here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wkjtc6qQQSE

Looked like a picked a good time to catch my first Duck game of the year...
I’ve heard a lot of great things about this team, coached by Altman, and I’m now a believer.
The defense was constant, and there were few lapses that make you want to gouge your eyes out. This is what I wanted to watch for the last few years.
The team isn’t that skilled, but when they can get a little bit of offense going, it’s a lot of fun to watch.

What
does the “TTATT” at the bottom of the O mean?
If ya can't get your Dick Enright, get your Dick Harter!
Its supposed to read "Matt" and it does if you look closely
Its apparently a Japanese symbol of some sort, Phil explained it last night.
