On Losing and Winning (Simultaneously): A TWITS Perspective
This week I've seen many excellent, lucid attempts at blogging catharsis on this here web site. As expected, our emotions range from desperate ("OMG that was our only chance OMG") to realistic ("Patience, grasshopper") to pissed off.
Me, I was a sad duck. I couldn't really think about the game much for a few days. I'd pop on here now and then to make a snarky aside or two, but couldn't really get inspired beyond the level of Fuck Juju to comment. Finally, I fired up the DVR tonight and replayed the critical parts of the 4th quarter, ending it with the Dyer Down Dash. With few exceptions (DT's nasal probe was an unfortunate bit of timing), I found myself marveling at how good my Ducks looked on the biggest stage around. And I found my inspiration...
I've never really been convinced that My Team has actually made it to the next level until now. So, like others here, I'm not as upset as I might have expected myself to be. Yes, it would have been awesome to win. But we were right there - and remember, no other team in our position in the last 5 BCS games against SEC opponents has been close to "right there."
Oregon Football made its statement on Monday; the loss was almost insignificant.
I had to travel on business this week, and as usual wore my O hat and shirt on the planes. I can't count the number of positive comments I heard from other travelers, most of whom weren't Oregon fans. Everyone was impressed. We may have a rep among conference foes as a bunch of jerks, but that rep doesn't extend far.
A friend who is a huge OSU honk (a writer on BTD) watched the game in a Salem bar with other OSU fans. His group had started the game rooting for Auburn, big time, but by the 4th quarter they were all pulling for Oregon along with the Duck fans. The guy sitting behind me on the plane back from California -- a USC alum -- begrudgingly admitted doing the same thing.
It didn't hurt that this game had its Manichaean angle, and we were on the good side in this one -- unless you were an Auburn fan. (And, after all, don't they deserve something for having to live in Alabama?)
Our team looked great - personally, the electric chartreuse is growing on me -- and played better than that.
Puddles is a national hero. Our cheerleaders set a national standard. Our coaching staff is great. Our stadium is awesome. We're on TV every week. And the BCS game was the capper. To me, this game meant more to the program and perception of Duck Football than any Rose Bowl win I can imagine.
I am so immensely proud of these guys, I could just burst like the overstuffed bag of microwave popcorn I'm told I resemble.
Because the team is living up to the standard that has been set for it by Uncle Phil and the Oregon marketing team.
The comments of some younger Oregon fans, or post-Pickers, who have never really known what futility and loss REALLY mean, should make me mad. They don't. I just chuckle. Some of y'all have NO idea how good you have it. For perspective, let's return to my core competency, which is "reminding all y'all how much better things are now, regardless of Monday's result."
Did you know..
- Since Chip Kelly arrived in February 2007, Oregon has won more games (41) than any other Pac10 team? Yes, this includes USC (40), despite their 11- and 12-win seasons of 2007 and 2008.
- Oregon's 41-11 record since 2007 ranks 6th among all FBS teams, trailing only fBSU, TOSU, TCU, Utah and Florida.
- The Ducks scored 611 points this season. Putting this number into TWITS perspective:
- From the first game of The Suffering, a season-opening home loss to Missouri on 9 Sept 1972, it took Oregon 42 games to eclipse 611 points. They finally totaled 617 after a 50-17 loss at UCLA on 8 Nov 1975. Almost 4 seasons, and 2 coaches.
- Don Read's Oregon teams only managed 406 points during his three seasons.
- Rich Brooks' first three Duck squads? 537 points.
- Worse, Brooks later managed to outdo the dubious achievements of Enright and Read by taking 43 games to break 611 points (5 Sept 1981 - 10 Nov 1984).
- Four of the top 5 margins of victory records in the modern era (post-WW2) are held by this year's senior class.
- 2010 - 28.3 average MOV
- 2007 - 14.5
- 2008 - 13.7
- 2001 - 13.0
- 2009 - 12.3
(By comparison, the first seasons of Rich Brooks and Don Read occupy the bottom rung in the "non-MOV" records. Brooks lost by an average of 19.4 points in '77; Read, by 19.5 in '74.)
- Oregon posted two shutout victories this season for the first time since 1964, when Bob Berry led the Ducks to back-to-back whitewashings of Arizona and Washington. By contrast, Oregon has only been shut out once since 1985; we won't talk about that one. (During The Suffering, we were skunked 14 times in 13 seasons, including thrice in '74 and '76.)
- Paid attendance at the 13 Oregon games in 2010-11 was 823,279. Home attendance over 6 games - 356,387 - was an Autzen record for 6 home games. At the risk of piling on the record of a Really Nice Guy, Autzen attendance during Read's coaching career at Oregon totaled 364,900 - in 15 games.
So.. yes. A fond farewell to this year's seniors. These guys made this the best year ever.
Until the next one.

Well Said!
I always look forward to Benz’s posts – As a kid in the 70’s and 80’s I witnessed a good portion of ‘The Suffering’ but (fortunately) don’t recall the details like Benz… Now though with some success, it actually feels good to go back and know from where we came.
Those too young to have experienced it firsthand should thank their lucky stars. And read up on the history and also work to see that we never go back to those dark days. Remember the old saw: “Those who don’t know history are DOOMED to repeat it.” NEVER AGAIN! NEVER AGAIN!

I’m finally over the loss, and focusing on just how awesome this season was. That we lost the final game makes it no less so. And when you look at how far Oregon football has come, its amazing.
Its a great time to be a Duck. You are right—becoming a Duck fan in ’94, my timing has been so incredibly fortunate.

Great stuff Benz
I would also be best described as ‘sad Duck’, but it has gotten better every day this week. But you’ve inspired me. I’m goin’ in. I’m going to watch my DVR’d recording today with your thoughts in mind. Like a stiff shot of liquor, I might need to chase it with a nice soothing dose of UCLA, but that’s okay, right?
Watching it yesterday, to me, felt like closure.
I’m still sad, but not very. I took away the positives from the game (there are quite a few of them.) I feel better.

4th quarter clock?
I have watched the game twice. Pay attention around the 6:31 mark in the 4th quarter. When the Ducks are moving the ball down the field, they make forward progress and go out of bounds 4 different times. Watch the clock. It does stop for a little bit but starts back up way before they snap the ball. Maybe I don’t know the rules, feel free to call me stupid. Isn’t the clock supposed to stop when a player goes out of bounds? Just saying…..
It restarts once the ball is set, unless it’s inside of 2 minutes in the half. They changed the play clock rules a few years ago, and that was part of the change.

Am I a b-a-a-a-d duck?
Great post benz, but now I am wondering if I am not as good of a duck fan as I thought I was. Not because of your post, but because of what I observed pre and post nattie. Every duck fan I have talked too has said they would root for the beavers if the rolls were reversed. Me included. Have the bucked toothed bark eaters reached such a state of depression that their hatred of the ducks has now over ridden any pride whatsoever in the PAC 12, the pacific northwest, or the state of Oregon for gawd sakes? I don’t hate the beavers, never have. I just love my ducks. My visions, hopes, or expectations for the ducks have never included a desire to create little man syndrone for the beavs. My beaver buddies looked so pathetic in thier Auburn hats and tee’s during the nattie, trying to make a statement of some sort. For their sake I pretended to be upset, giving them a morsel of comfort in their football lives. So, so sad when a measure of success can be obtained when your instate rival looses in the BCS champsionship game. Kick me out of the duck fan club if I ever sink that low. Look how far our ducks have come, and how far the polar opposite beavers have gone. It makes me sad.
been down so long, it looks like up to me.
It's not about you, ducky. It's about them, and their desperate attempts to gain relevance.
The baver fan who came out of the darkness and into the light during the 4th quarter will be forgiven.
The rest of them, making what they think is a Great Statement in their Auburn hats and tees, can go to hell along with their buddies at UW and fBSU.
I know it’s beyond unlikely, but if OAC ever gets into a position of playing for a NC, the last thing you’ll see is me draped in the livery of their opponent. I’d sooner eat a plate of pan-fried banana slugs.

The actual purchasing of Auburn paraphernalia is what really shows their jealousy. Root for your rival, or don’t, but do it wearing the colors of your own team, or your normal clothes, don’t give money to a school you are not a fan of simply because they are going against your hated rival in a game your team has yet to reach.
65-38 really was a turning point for both ours and theirs programs.
2 years later, one is 12-1 and the other is 5-7.
They once showed a clip of the Oregon offense to the French. The French decided to surrender, just to be on the safe side.

Yeah, and I would say most of us hate the fuskies more than the Beavs anyhow
by NICKPAPAGEORGIOTHEDUCK on Jan 15, 2011 7:00 PM PST up reply actions
Absolutely. I would cheer for the beavers in the NC
or any bowl game. Grudgingly and quietly cheer, but I’d be happy if they won. I loved the 2000 victory over Notre Dame. The fuskies on the other hand…even though we are both from the Northwest, I have friends at UW etc, I just couldn’t cheer for them in any way.
I wouldn’t buy gear from the opposing team (that is reserved for fBSU) but I certainly would not be happy with a fusky victory of any kind.
I don't know that I would cheer for them.
But I wouldn’t make an ass of myself by rooting openly for their opponent.
It’s a rhetorical question, anyway.
Oregon Ducks. Undefeated during regular season vs SEC since 1977.
At least...
I have ALWAYS cheered for the Beavs when they play USC. And for the past what? …5 years now?? The old goliath hasn’t won in Oregon at all. I think it’s cause both of our programs have had long stretches of duty as under dogs. And USC has carried their swag even though their program has dipped in recent years. I’ll always root for the Beavs to upset just enough of the PAC to help us get to the top. And I’ll always root for the Beavs to hack into any other FBS team’s ranking other than the Ducks. The rest of the time, If i need to fuel some spite for the Beavs, I just go hang around the OLive forums for a few minutes and I hate the Beavs again. Washington I will only root for in BCS games really. But once again, They seem to have USC’s number in recent seasons too. Cant wait to see what the PAC 12 conf schedule brings to the cypher this coming season.
Old Guy Trojan fan defeatedly smoking a cig in the bathroom line @ the Coli during halftime:
"How DOES anybody stop you guys?!?!"
Me: Uhhhhhhh. er, well...
Go Ducks!
I would not root for the Beavers in the national championship because they are our rivals, and as such, I want them to lose. Always. Would I spend money on their opponent’s gear? Hell no. That’s ridiculous. But I’m still going to root for them to lose.
Defending maligned chants since 2009
But the rivalry with the beavs is like the rivalry you have with your little brother
you might punch him, you might put preparation H in his toothpaste, but you don’t really want him to fail and the rivalry is in good fun.
exactly
while the Beavers have seemingly some newfound hate for us, I don’t hate them. It is our little brother. They know who’s boss in the family but, outside of the family, you want your little brother to take care of business

We Suck We Suck We Suck
So this team was special, y’all agreed? So these seniors were the winningest class in Oregon history, you knew that, right? And undefeated through the regular season is an amazing accomplishment, correct? Never been done before by us! Ranked #1 in the BCS for a brief while! At the top of the human polls most of the season! Chip Kelly is half man, half God! We all love Nate and the guys! Thrilling season! Heroic final game! They did us proud!
And yet, WHERE WERE ALL OF YOU WHEN THIS TEAM CAME HOME? NOT ONE SINGLE GUY (ok, there was one guy!) TO RECEIVE THIS TEAM! THIS WONDERFUL GROUP OF KIDS WHO PLAYED THEIR HEARTS OUT FOR US! THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN 20,000 STRONG CROWD WHEN THEIR BUS PULLED IN TO EUGENE AND WE SHOULD HAVE GIVEN THEM A HUGE AUTZEN ROAR AND AN OVATION FIT FOR WHAT THEY ACCOMPLISHED THIS SEASON!
I, for one, am ashamed I didn’t try harder to make that happen. I was fully intending to go. Before the game, I had asked on here if anyone knew when the team was scheduled to come back. And I didn’t get any responses and I didn’t follow up, thinking it would be discussed after the game for sure. And I didn’t. We didn’t. We let this team down. They deserved so much better from us. I suck. There is a parade on the 22nd for all the athletic teams, I think. Be there! GO DUCKS!
Oregon loves you, Chip Kelly!
Did anybody know when they were coming back? Was there any effort to publicize this?
Hard for me to believe that nobody showed up.
Oregon Ducks. Undefeated during regular season vs SEC since 1977.
The team actively did not tell anyone when they were coming back. Because of that, there was a lone guy at the airport when the plane rolled in.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
Wouldn’t it be more accurate to say that the team passively did not tell anyone when they were coming back?
Not that this team did anything passively. Still.
Oregon Ducks. Undefeated during regular season vs SEC since 1977.
They didn't tell anyone
But normally they never do. It was just an eerily silent and empty place when they came back, judging by the tv clip.

I distinctly remember Jerry used to announce the approximate arrival time of the team from road games when MB was coach.

It was a devastating loss for them? Don't know.
Maybe Chip wanted to keep things low key? But if they had won, I can’t help thinking there would have been a ton of people out there. That’s what doesn’t sit right with me right now.
After all, it was the last game for a lot of Ducks, Nate and Jeff and DJ etc. It was the last time this team came home. It was the first time we had played in the National Championship. I’d like to think the team would have been cheered up by having a huge turnout applauding them, regardless of the win. The message to the players should never be we support you only if you win. It looked that way, and it doesn’t sit well with me. I know everybody loves this team. It would have been nice to be there for them when they needed us.

I distinctly remember years ago after the Blazers lost to the Bulls in game 6 of the 1992 finals that about 4k people showed up at the airport to greet the team coming home. Probably would have been similar type of reception.

See if you can get something organized for the seniors to be intoduced....
Before one of our upcoming home games. Maybe a push for this and a long standing ovation could make up for it a bit. Just a suggestion but maybe something like this could be suggested to someone in power and pulled off.

Was that there were at least twice as many auburn fans at the game. Bcs games should be split 45/45 and 10 for sponsors etc.

Auburn and Oregon got the same number of tickets I believe. Their fans simply bought more tickets in the secondary market.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
Yep – the disparity in the stadium was pretty shocking. Maybe that just means Oregon fans are more fiscally responsible?
I think the many more Oregon fans sold their tickets on Stubhub, etc, which I do understand since there was such a huge demand – but it’s just a bummer that it was all Auburn fans that bought them, and not many Oregon fans.
It was similar last year at the Rose Bowl, but not as pronounced – probably more like 55/45 there, whereas I’d say it was almost 70/30 for the NCG.
I'd say
66% AU 33% UofO. Half of the NW end zone should have been Ducks and the two sections deeper into the UofO half of the stadium were also sold to AU fans. The thing I heard is AU has a big roller almunus who is also a ticket broker and he bought a bunch of the Duck section for $2,000.00 a pop the week after tickets were released.

I heard that many Auburn fans had been saving up since they got left out a few years ago. They were ready to spend a ridiculous amount of money – more than Oregon fans.
It’s spelled "J-A-Y-S-H-O-E-F-E-L-T-J-S-H-U-F-E-L-T"

The monthly Dr Pepper budget for your typical Auburn fan has to be at least $3-4000. How could they ever save enough money from what remains of their welfare checks to afford NCG tickets? I mean I know that being toothless, they don’t have to worry about dental bills or anything, and since all they wear is one of their three wifebeaters and denim overalls handed down from their great granpappies, they don’t have to worry about buying clothes. But the gubbiment don’t pay real well.

He meant it in a positive way.
He was comparing our depth to theirs, the fact that everyone is in the good to great range and there aren’t really any out of this world superstars with the possible exception of LMJ, he was saying we are a true team.
Which I agree with, but I could not help but think of those 4 fucking lost Superbowls.

Rec'd great read
I am a fan of the Ducks since 2001—I am a die hard LSU fan and SEC homer minus AU and I don’t know how long that will be (too much with Cam, Fairley and recent history with LSU), but also an overall college football fan and like teams from all conferences. Oregon has a lot going for it (all the things you had mentioned), and both the ability to recruit on the national stage and I think being in the Pac 10 North, Oregon should have a good opportunity to get to the CCG every year right away.
LSU has won 720 games (12th overall nationally and 4th in the SEC) and has won three NCs, but I personally went through the [(late) Archer-Hallman-Dirardo] years as a college student (all four years of Hallman+Arhcer’s last) and then watched the Dinardo years with hope and then with “here we go again” so I never take any win for granted or feel too bad after a loss (well after a while with that though). The low point of the Hallman years was sitting in Tiger Stadium and watching Florida destroy us 58-3 for example. Watching as a kid and then a teen in the 80’s, LSU was mostly up and never on the NC scene but I loved watching the games at Tiger Stadium, on TV, or even listening on the radio as LSU beat USC in the LA back in 84.
The game in Dallas should be a great one—we have a lot coming back with hopefully a good OC (Fuente TCU’s co-OC is interviewing and I hope it goes well because he seems like a great fit) and are facing a very good program (your point and part of that was playing really well in the NCG). If LSU wins, we still have a rough road ahead with the conference schedule—likewise for Oregon if they win.

I’m thinking about going, but will probably watch this one on tv and save the roadie for Boulder, because Boulder > Dallas in late summer.

Any info would be greatly appreciated on this or guys that played some this year who would look to contribute in the game against us next year.

losing LT Barksdale, RB Ridley (declared early), WR Tolliver on offense
and CB Petterson, MLB Shepard, and DL Nevis on D I believe—so I think it will be 8 on both offense and defense. The oline should be solid—our best guard Blackwell was lost on the first play of the UNC game this year and Hurst is a good tackle. Spencer Ware true freshman this year really had a great Cotton Bowl at RB and Ford a RS freshman this year really came on late this year. We have a very good wideout in Randel and Shepard could really emerge with a new OC who can use him better.
A lot of young talent on defense with cb Mathieu a rising star and we will get Montgomery-very good against run and pass—at DE end back who was injured early in UT game and 5 star Anthony Johnson should be able to contribute right a way on DL—but we will see as you have to with all freshman. We lose senior leadership on D though and someone will need to step up there, plenty of leadership on offense (both QB’s have experience); really looking forward to it already.

Thanks. That was what I wanted to know.
Based on that I would say you guys will likely win this one in a close game based on our having to break in a new O-line and you guys having the whole off season to defensively scheme for our spread. That being said, if Greatwood is able to pull our O-line into midseason form somehow we could win for sure!

look like a bag of popcorn?
I don’t see it, i’d like some photo evidence, even a photoshopped head on some smartpop would work

Trust me on this.
Oregon Ducks. Undefeated during regular season vs SEC since 1977.

Finally watched the DVR of the game yesterday (was in AZ)
and honestly, if we played that game 10 times, in the same way, we win at least 5 out of 10, and at least another 4 in 10 go to overtime. It came down to 2 less-than-a-yard plays, that even with a beastly AU Dline, we should still pick up 90% of the time.
The safety with half the ball out of the endzone, and not getting any points after the Tuinei catch (which was much cooler on DVR than from section 420). Add 1 more yard to either of these plays and we win. Add 1 more yard to just the turnover on downs on the 1 and AU needs to drive for the TD to tie in the last second, not the FG to win.
In a match up of two very good teams it really did come down to inches, and their D-line play made those inches count. Our skilled position players did a great job, and I honestly think that we win that game most of the time if we had literally just 2 more yards of offense.
Anyway, I’m recovering from the loss, but I still can’t wait for next season. MBB and NBA are okay, but nothing can compare with that season (until the next one) Go Ducks!
I agree. Though I'm not too bummed about the game, these facts do make a bad way to lose!!!
We were SOOOOO close to winning that game.
